Nick Diaz is now fighting Penn instead of GSP.
I think this is better all-around. I am confident in GSP's ability to get a boring win over either Diaz or Condit, so that matchup is kind of a push for me. But Diaz in there against Penn? HOLY SHIT that sounds like a fun fight.

I've been reading a lot of talk that says Condit has a better chance with GSP, since Diaz has such shitty wrestling.
I went back and watched Condit's fights and this is what I found:
Kyle Jensen put Condit on his back in 11 sec
John Alessio put Condit on his back in 65 sec
Brock Larson put Condit on his back in 48 sec
Carlo Prater put Condit on his back in 30 sec
Hiromitsu Miura put Condit on his back in 102 sec
Martin Kampmann put Condit on his back in 47 sec
Jake Ellenberger put Condit on his back in 9 sec
Rory Macdonald put Condit on his back in 46 sec
Dan Hardy attempted no takedowns
Dong Hyun Kim put Condit on his back in 43 sec
SHIT THROUGH A GOOSE

Condit's one of those guys who concedes takedowns because he can generally get right back up, not to mention his BJJ. I just don't know if its enough against GSP.

I just dug up ROTR 9
Frank Trigg put Condit on his back in 3 sec
Jake Shields put Condit on his back in 8 sec
I find it inconceivable that he will be on his feet for even one minute cumulative over five rounds.

Update:
Satoru Kitaoka put Condit on his back in 17 sec
Tatsunori Tanaka put Condit on his back in 29 sec
Renato Verissimo attempted a takedown and Condit killed him in the face
Jarvis Brennaman took Condit down in 8 sec, but was never actually in control and got tapped quick

It's all you need to know when his opponent is going to be GSP. And it's a counter to this absurd notion that Diaz had this wrestling Achilles' heel (probably true), while Condit has a skillset that would match up better against such an unbelievable wrestler.

In his post-fight, Diaz thanked his boxing coach, his jiu jitsu coach, another jiu jitsu coach David Terrell, and his sambo coach. Conspicuously absent was mention of a wrestling coach. He has absolutely no chance of stopping a GSP takedown. I would be inclined to say the longer he waits to fight GSP the better, but that's not true, since he'll just run into a Fitch or Koscheck and get wrestlefucked by them instead.

Condit is an idiot. I understand that he got the shot in the first place because Diaz is also an idiot, but you don't just step aside when given a title shot. Now, Condit is either going to end up like Rashad and never get his shot or he's going to get Fitch'd or Kos'd. I hope Dana handed Condit his win bonus and projected PPV cut last night when he made GSP/Diaz official.

apparently, reports of him stepping aside are incorrect and that GSP wanted to fight Diaz more because of the post fight comments that Diaz made.

So, who you guys got in tomorrow's freebie?
I'm gonna go with Dos Santos over Velasquez and as much as this pains me to say, Henderson over Guida. Unless Guida can get Henderson to the ground and stifle him, Bendo will do to Guida what Diego Sanchez did.

We haven't really seen enough from either of them to have a solid idea of whose weaknesses will be tested the most.
First off, I think you have to give an edge to JDS due to Cain's injury. Until we actually see him in there, that's still a huge question mark.
Junior has only faced one wrestler, and he fucked his shit up before Carwin was able to test his takedown defense too extensively.
Cain on the other hand got dropped repeatedly by Kongo, but that was almost three years ago. He ate a couple of shots from Lesnar, but both that fight and the Nog fight were pretty much one-sided. But still....wrestling. It's hard to bet against wrestling. I guess my pick is Cain.

You know how not to get a mass audience, who have never watched MMA before, hooked on your product? Show them three hours of atrociously boring matches. THAT is why the Strikeforce show was a disaster. [Not the brawl...are you kidding? People eat that shit up.]
And how are they going to time this perfectly? Fights don't exactly start and end at a certain time.
Of course fights start at certain times. People need to know exactly when they're going on to get their warmups done right. You think they're running the show for the live crowd? This has always been a TV product.

It just seems strange that a main event would be going off at 9:00/9:30 pm. When does the actual card start, 6 pm?
Oh, and they could of at least given us the Guida-Henderson fight as well. That's probably going to be more action packed than the HW fight.

They really should've showed the Guida vs. Henderson fight. I was bummed that Cain lost, I thought the stoppage was a little quick as far as title fights go.....the subsequent shots appeared to be landing on Cains shoulder, and the two the Dos Santos actually connected with in the following melee looked like they woke Cain up a bit. Having the Guida fight on there though would have given some new fans a good idea of what to expect.

Cain turned his back and stopped defending. Had Junior decided to start playing bongos on his back like T. Silva/Vera Big John would have been right to stop it. Brock got more time against both Carwin and Velasquez because he was defending himself, if poorly in the Cain fight.

The main card was fucking outstanding, and now I just watched the prelims, which had several quick KOs and subs. All told, this is one of the best shows I've ever seen.
The problem with the Hendo fight is that it lacks very much meaning. It wasn't for a belt, and it probably won't lead to a title shot right away, since Jones and Silva are already spoken for. For that reason, I still think you have to rank something like Silva-Sonnen higher.

That's what I'm talking about. It was essentially Brock's first fight, literally his second, and he was kicking the shit out of Mir until he got cocky/stupid and got caught. That and beating up an old, sick, Nog (and almost losing to him the second time until Minotauro made the same mistake Brock did) are how he got ranked so high to begin with. He got CRUSHED by Brock the second time and got an even worse beating from Carwin. Victories over 2010 Crocop, Kongo (although that one was impressive), and Nelson aren't really anything to write home about even in a weak HW division.

So, who do you guys have tonight?
Lesnar vs Overeem?
Cerrone vs Diaz?
I'm gonna go with Overeem and Cerrone. I don't think Lesnar has that great a chin and I think Reem will be too much for him once he tags him. As for the other, I hope Cowboy makes Diaz look like the punk bitch that he is.

Tonight??? Fuck.
I don't think you can really pick a winner for this fight, it's really more a case of whose enormous flaws will be exposed first.
If I had to bet, I'd guess it will be Brock's aversion to being punched in the face. And who really knows what kind of shape he's in after yet more surgery.
But it's still possible that he can clinch up with Overeem for a round or two and wear him out, eventually getting a takedown. Then it's his fight to lose.
I'm not sure who I like in the LW fight. I'm really looking forward to it, that's for sure. I think Cerrone is more likely to fight a smart fight; which means keeping it standing and win on points.
I also think Gamburyan vs. Nunes will be a good one.

I'm not even sure, other than Kim, who you're referring to as shit. I'm as hard as anyone on Frank Mir, but the guy's hardly shit. Especially in the heavyweight division. Herring, while not exactly in his prime when Brock got him, is legit as it gets and was at one time probably the #2 HW in the world behind Big Nog before the rise of Fedor. And Carwin, like almost every HW, has huge issues, but also isn't shit.

I'm still learning about MMA, but can anyone explain to me why Cerrone, who had to know he was behind, put Diaz down on the mat not once, not twice, but three times and didn't charge him at all, but just walked away?
Every time I see someone go down in UFC, the other fighter at least makes an attempt to charge and get a couple of shots in. I know the risk is there in getting caught, but I had never seen anything like this before.

While Cerrone isn't a slouch on the ground, the Diaz brothers are known for being masters down there. Every time I saw a Nate Diaz fight and his opponent jumped into his guard, I would be screaming at them to get out because Diaz has this knack of submitting everyone who makes that mistake.
As for Overeem, while I like the guy and think he is a legitimate threat, I absolutely hate this one fight and then a title shot bullshit. Yes, he is the reigning Strikeforce champ and has held numerous titles, but for Christ's sake, make people earn their title shots. I personally can't stand Frank Mir, but he's been on a roll lately. Let Mir fight Reem for the #1 spot and then the winner gets JDS.

I really want Condit to knock Diaz' ass out, just to shut him up, but I just know that Diaz will win. Most likely a decision. Then we get treated to the asshole talking shit for months until GSP comes back. :annoyed:
On a side note, I was curious about something. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is basically considered the best out there, and there are so many friggin' camps available that one wouldn't know where to start when it comes to training. Aside from the Gracies, who is considered the best BJJ coach in the U.S.?

I think I'd actually like to see Diaz win it and maintain it for a while. I do like GSP, but after so many years of his cookie cutter nice guy style, I think it would be cool to have the polar opposite hold the title. They hype for that match up upon GSP's return writes itself. And I like Diaz....I get where he comes from....he's about to fight a dude and he's supposed to be all nice for the cameras? For him it doesn't work and it's almost refreshing. Condits fights are exciting but I think in terms of after this fight, the weight class is more interesting if Diaz comes away as the interim title holder.
As far as BJJ coaches in the US, Eddie Bravo, Dave Camarillo, and Robert Drysdale are probably the top 3. Matt Serra runs two gyms somewhere on Long Island and is the first American to be awarded a black belt in BJJ by a Gracie. I think you could make a case for any of those dudes.

The way I see it, GSP vs Diaz will happen regardless of if Nick wins tomorrow so besides my dislike of the Diaz brothers, I would rather see Condit win and then have GSP's first fight back be against him. This way it shakes off any rust GSP will have from being on the shelf for so long and it will get him comfortable with his fixed knee. When the GSP-Diaz fight eventually happens, I want GSP at his best and I'm afraid his first fight back won't be.

Even though I'm not a fan of Pettis, I gotta feel for the guy a bit. He was supposed to be first in line for a title shot when the UFC and WEC merged, but he keeps getting bumped back. Looks like it's gonna happen yet again.

When I first heard about it, it sounded intriguing, but I had no idea how it would work. After seeing it, I'm left thinking what's the big deal. The whole thing about the fight being live after watching taped footage from the week adds absolutely nothing to me. There is still a fight at the end, so what does the live aspect bring to the table?
My only hope is this means there won't be months between the end of the show and the finals fight. I always wanted to see the two in the finals go at it when they are on a roll, not months later.

I didn't realize there was a show last night. I'm watching it now.
Holy shit Belcher/Paul Harris was great. I can't remember the last time I got so pumped up during a fight. Fights like this remind me why I love this sport.

For as much as I despise both Diaz brothers (Nick moreso than Nate), that was impressive what he did. Kinda sucks that he now has to wait and possibly fight again before getting his shot at the title since he is on a roll right now.

The Cain fight was awesome. Less a fight and more an Aztec sacrifice, but very awesome.
JDS wasn't terribly exciting, but he is so good at what he does. I still think Overeem would have gassed after a round of chasing him all over the octagon.
Good show from top to bottom.

While Guida is one of my favorite fighters, I wasn't happy with how much he moved out of distance when engaged. That said, he still won the first 3 rounds while Maynard won the last two. Explain when and where Maynard won any of the first 3 rounds. He basically landed nothing while Guida was in and out and landing shots.

Franklin is, and his overall career probably will be, criminally underrated because of what Anderson did to him. Assuming Chael wins in 2 weeks I really believe Rich might have another championship run in him.

So, who do you have in what may be one of the most anticipated rematches? Silva or Sonnen?
Part of me wants to say if Sonnen can execute the same gameplan as he did in the first (minus getting caught in the 5th round), then he could take this, but I have a hard time believing that Silva will allow him to manhandle him again.
I'll go with a Silva sub in the 3rd or 4th round, but he won't take the beating he did before pulling it off this time.
spe5150
07-06-2012, 02:38 PM
I'm really torn, too. On one hand I want to say Sonnen can do that again & this time avoid getting tapped, but on the other hand I think Silva has truly had enough of his shit & may win via murder.
I'm just not sure how to take Anderson's break from the nice guy/silent guy bullshit to saying he's going to break every bone in Chael's body. Is Sonnen in his head, in a good way? Or is Sonnen's walk to the cage tomorrow night his own personal Green Mile? Don't know, but I'm amped as hell to find out.
Gun to my head, I gotta go Anderson by TKO.
I'm also more excited than I thought I would be for Forrest/Tito. Never sure what Forrest you're going to get, but he's usually at his best when he fights in Vegas so I'm hoping for a Griffin win but a good showing by Tito in his farewell.

I was kinda looking forward to seeing Ryan Jimmo's debut. He has a 16 fight winning streak, was the MFC champ at 205, but other than Sokoudjou I really didn't know any of his opponents so I was hoping to see how well-rounded a fighter he really was.
Well, turns out he's got a helluva right hand. The rest I'll have to wait to see.

Dana White is a such a coward.
He said the entire PPV card sucked EXCEPT the main event which he had the balls to call a "Great technical fight".. The Faber fight was fucking awful. It's the main event and it was 5 rounds of dancing and faber eating leg kicks.. Both guys don't have a mark on them..
Worst UFC PPV in ages and Dana saying we're crazy for booing the main event is a dick move.

I like Faber a lot, but I'm beginning to think this was nothing more than a "big fish in a small pond" type thing. He looked great and unstoppable in the WEC because, well, it was the WEC.
Now that he's moved to the big time, unfortunately for him and his fans, he's showing that while he may be good, he's not as great as he appeared to be.
Dirtbag
07-23-2012, 05:58 AM
The WEC was where, for the most part, the best 145ers in the world fought though. I think it's more that the weight class as a whole was undeveloped, and now Faber is in his mid-30s. He also breaks his hands in round one of every fight. He crushed both Bowles and Mizugaki who are both legit guys. Aldo is a beast and Barao is said to be his second coming. It's impossible to look good against Cruz.

I think this applies to most guys who are considered great before they get to UFC. Faber, Wanderlei, Crocop, Fedor, a slew of japanese guys... None really live up to the hype. And yes i realize Fedor never fought UFC.

So, I've noticed that Ronda Rousey is starting to get a lot of exposure in the UFC.
First she appeared on an episode of TUF, then she's been on the UFC website, and now she's being shown in the crowd at PPVs and even hanging with Dana White.
Anyone else think that Dana may be softening his stance on women's MMA and may allow it in soon? When Cyborg comes back, a Rousey-Cyborg matchup would be killer for them.
