Congratulations!...with the start of Spring Training today, the Cubs are now entering their 100th year since their last World Series victory.

In all honesty, though, they've got a nice shot this year to win the NL...maybe it's finally time for their year of destiny.

They've also been around since 1883.

I'm fairly sure they don't have the worst winning percentage ever.

For the purposes of this analysis, only the original sixteen teams in existence at the beginning of the twentieth century should be relevant. The Rockies, Devil Rays, Padres, and Rangers all have lower winning percentages, but over much shorter sample sizes. The Devil Rays (10 years) and Rockies (15 year) should be thrown out immediately. The Phillies have the lowest winning percentage of all the original teams (.468). The Padres (39 years) and the Rangers (47 years) have been around longer, but neither of them even half as long as the Phillies’ 124 years. Even so, their winning percentages of .463 and .467 are not that much worse than the Phils’ .468.

Oh yeah, and fuck the Cubs.

2nd winningest record in baseball history...they just can't seal the deal.

I already used this once, but I figure it works here, too:

Yeah, but I could use the flip-side logic on that and project the number off loses based on those winning percentages and they would all reach 10,000 faster.

The bottom line is that if there's any way to really compare the winningness of franchises, you have to do it on winning pct.

P.S.: The Phillies did the vast majority of their losing between 1918-1948...a 30 year stretch of losing unparalleled in the history of sport.

It's actually been a decent franchise from that point on.

That's a little deceiving too.

From 1945 back, the Cubs were a phenomenal franchise.

After 1945...not so much.

I will say that Lee Elia is the author of my favorite rant in the history of baseball:

Might as well post my other favorite Cubs video as well:

I like Bowa's helpful hand gestures. I can just picture the guy he's yelling at not hearing what he's saying, but then flying into a rage at the sight of Larry's hand-vagina.

And hey, a win is a win. Besides the Yanks, the Cubs have the most. That's why us Cubs fans are so happy-go-lucky.

That line just made me laugh, its not that funny but with the tone that I imagined a phils fan saying it was funny. I agree that the Phils have been decent and they are still on another upswing from the past few years.

The Phillies?

The....Phillies?

Hey, I guess if I grew up in Philly, I'd be a Phillies fan too, but I didn't. I grew up pretending that I was George Mitterwald or Champ Summers (hey, it was the 70's), back when the neighborhood around Wrigley was a dump and summer camp kids would take yellow school buses to the game for a day trip. Dennis Franz and company wrote their play about a sub culture, losers with nothing better to do than wile away the day behind left field.

Not anymore. It's corporate now, but not anymore corporate than any other major league team. Still, something is missing, and I get why there are Cubs haters out there now. This is a team with serious money and no good excuses left for not winning. Now, it's just bad luck and circumstances. They'll win one soon, and Chicago will awkwardly celebrate like they always do, overdoing the sentiment and civic pride.

Chicago's a weird town that way, and it's my home town so I get to say so. You can walk into a bar in New York, and most women won't know who Derek Jeter is, but in Chicago, most chicks will know that Kyle Orton went to Purdue.

Go Cubs.

Not any

Incompetence is a very good reason.
