View Full Version : NL Central Discussion
Pitchers & Catchers have reported and it's time to battle for the NL Central crown. Rather than starting 3 different threads...I figured we could all argue in one conveniently located thread.
Alright, I'll start the mess with my division predictions for the season:
1. Brewers
2. Cubs
3. Reds
4. Astros
5. Cardinals
6. Pirates
Live with that MojoPin!
You're insane if you think the Brewers are going to capture the division. Cubs take it easily with a win total in the low 90s.

The latest FireJoeMorgan.com piece takes on some wonderful comments Dusty had recently. Good luck, Reds fans (posting the "article" since you can't link to it directly, only their entire archives):
Being a dad is crazy! Oh my God, it's so insane. If you don't have kids, you just have no idea what it's like. Kids are nuts. I'd like to share just a few little observations I have to make about being a dad.
1. Just kidding. Here's a dumb quote from Dusty Baker.
Baker has repeatedly talked about the desire to have a do-it-all leadoff hitter with speed.
Dusty is the only one who wants this?
What kinds of hitters is he looking for further down the lineup? Does he want guys with lofty on-base percentages? The answer will likely not sit well with fans of the book "Moneyball," because Baker said he believes the OBP statistic is overvalued.
I can't wait for what comes next. This is the single most exciting thing that has happened to me in the past week.
"I'm big on driving in runs and scoring runs," Baker said.
Huh. Seems like an odd way to go about winning baseball games, but okay. I mean, I would challenge your "driving in runs/scoring runs" strategy as outdated. Have you tried the modern and new methodology of: philosophizing about runs, and then sort of "surrounding" the runs with positively-charged ions, and then "inducing" runs with a combination of computer-aided design and game theory-based modeling?
Despair, Cincy fans. Your manager is giving an interview, and feels the need to announce that he is "big" on "driving in runs" and also "scoring runs." The man is a dummkopf.
"Guys in the middle should score about close to equal to what they drive in.
"About close to equal" is the set. Here's the spike:
On-base percentage, that's fine and dandy. But a lot of times guys get so much into on-base percentage that they cease to swing. It's becoming a little bit out of control.
And if they swing...and get on base...they have increased their...what, Dusty? Their...what? Their "On-blank-blank." Sound it out. Their "On-blank-Percentage." You can do it: their...okay. Forget it.
And yes, I know what he is saying. He is saying that he wants his guys to swing and get hits to "drive runners in," because he is "big" on that. But patient hitters, who walk a lot, are often better hitters, who hit better when they swing than impatient hitters, because they swing at better pitches. Forcing patient hitters to swing more = a bad idea.
Oh -- before, when I said that was the spike? I was wrong. Here's the spike. And it's a doozy.
"What you do is run the pitcher's count up, that helps," Baker said. "You put him in the stretch, that helps.
Correct. Correct. Now undermine it.
But your job in the middle is to either score them or drive them in. The name of the game is scoring runs. Sometimes, you get so caught up in on-base percentage that you're clogging up the bases."
Blammo!
Kerpow!
Bler-mump!
Sowpods!
I really can't understand how he can be "big" on scoring runs and driving in runs, but down on "clogging up the bases" with men who will (a) score the runs by (b) providing an opportunity for others to drive them in. You cannot score runs any other way. Unlessssssss -- I got it. He wants solo home run experts. That's it. He wants really fast runners, who will hit solo home runs and then run really fast around the bases. Okay. My apologies.
Despair, Cincy fans. Despair.
Next time: Dirty Diapers -- They're So Stinky!
Labels: clogging up the basepaths, dusty baker
Ah, the good ol' "clogging the bases." An old favorite from his time in Chicago.
Bastard!
Must you dash my hopes with unfailing logic?

Not sure about that, but I know his elbow is fucked up. It has been for a few years, though. He (and the trainers) decided against surgery that would put him out for a while. According to him, he will play through the pain and God will break it when he is ready. He leaves everything up to Jesus.

First at bat first pitch - standing double of the center field wall. He is not quite as fast as Ichiro but still quick. Not as much a power hitter as Matsui but a good situational hitter. We needed a good left handed bat (which he is) and more importantly he is great outfielder.

Through the Cardinals' first four games, the rotation was 3-0 with a 0.79 ERA and had combined for 18 strikeouts and 10 walks in 22 2/3 innings.
Wainwright has given up just 2 runs over 8 innings today.
One of the biggest weaknesses of this team was supposedly starting pitching. They have three top of the rotation pitchers due back (Piniero, Mulder, Carp) later in the year. Piniero in the next couple weeks, Mulder in late May, and Carp after the break. The bullpen is solid. Piniero and Carp should be positive additions, and hopefully they will trade Mulder for a bag of nickels. See ya in October.

And Brad Lidge tried desperately to give the game to the Reds today, coming in with a 3 run lead in the 9th inning. He retired the first two batters then loaded the bases and threw a wild pitch. With the score 5-3 and runners on second and third he worked a full count to Valentin who got punched out on a VERY high strike.

OK, so thus far, Cubs pitchers have issued the fewest walks, and their K/BB ratio is 2.68...behind only the freakin' REDS.
Cubs hitters have also taken a bunch of walks, something they seemed allergic to the last few years, 37 in 8 games...behind only the Cardinals and the REDS(!!!!!!!!) in the NL.
OK, I know it's early...but to see those kinds of numbers coming from the Reds under Baker is just mind-boggling. And I'm not anti-Red...even though they're division rivals, they're a classic legacy team and I usually like most of their players, so seeing them do well is awesome. I even hope Patterson figures it out, because Lord knows he has the tools to do so...I just can't stand to see it happen under Baker. Now, because Baker is there, I have confidence that these trends will reverse themselves, but still, DAMN YOU, DUSTY BAKER.

Since the Reds are the only games i will get if you look at their pitching staff its not so unbelieveable. Josh Fogg usually does not give up a lot of walks and Cueto and Volquez in three starts are a combined 26 SO and 2 BB's and Harang and Arroyo are up there as well.
And the hitting well the Reds probably lead the league in intentional walks received so far this year i would bet, just wait till Dunn, Patterson, and Phillips starts free swinging and that will all change

Well, and the thing with Dusty, you look at his time in SF and Chicago, he will get his team to produce for a year or two, and then it's all down into the toilet.
And I agree, Patterson will even out because he's still not taking any walks, but Dunn never stops taking them. The man is a beautiful OPS machine.

I will admit I may have underestimated the Cards a little this year. If they can maintain long enough to get back some of the guys they have on the DL later in the year, they could be a pretty hot team in the latter months of the season.

BP wisely nails the Cardinals' first month:
Just a hair behind the Cubs in what was expected to be a rebuilding year, the Cardinals are doing it by throwing strikes. No NL pitching staff has walked fewer men than their 74, leading to the third-fewest runs allowed and second-best ERA in the league. Without overpowering stuff—165 strikeouts, a mere 11th in the league—Cards pitchers have been pounding the strike zone and taking their chances.
They’re winning this game of chance thanks to a strangely low home-run rate: just 19 allowed, third in the NL, in 243 1/3 innings. That number almost has to go up when you look at the pitchers on the staff. Just to pick on one guy, Kyle Lohse has thrown 34 1/3 innings without yielding a long ball. He has an ERA of 2.36 despite a 14/8 K/BB in that time. His G/F of 1.80 is out of whack with his career mark of 1.04. Lohse usually gives up a homer every seven or eight innings. Now, it’s possible this is a mid-career reinvention; it’s more likely that it’s 30 strange innings, and that he’ll go back to being Kyle Lohse shortly. The rest of the staff is similar—Braden Looper has allowed one homer in 26 2/3 innings; Ryan Franklin, of all people, none in 13 1/3 innings; Brad Thompson, one in 17 1/3 innings. These rates are unsustainable.
There’s a reason beyond the pitching staff for these figures. Clay Davenport noted last week that the Cards have played the weakest schedule in baseball. It’s weak largely because it’s been populated by teams that can’t hit. The Cards have played seven games against the Giants (.365 SLG, 14th in NL; 14 HR, last); six against the Astros (.410 SLG, seventh in NL); five against the Brewers (.385, 11th; almost all innings pitched by RHPs) and nine others against the Nationals, Rockies, Pirates, and Reds. The Cardinals have played 75 percent of their schedule against teams with below-average slugging percentages. When that changes, they’ll allow more home runs, more runs, and slip away from the top of the NL Central.
Granted, the Cubs haven't faced a radically different schedule, but they do have drastically different offensive numbers. The Cubs' bats are obviously above their norms, but not significantly above their pythagorean projections. The Cardinals' pitching, on the other hand, is insanely beyond those projections...so much so that any kind of season-long performance even just near their April level would be nothing short of one of the most amazing baseball miracles in the entire history of the game.

Whatever. Let the analysts keep coming up with reasons why the Cards should/will suck so that they will still look smart with their stupid pre-season predictions. It's about winning and right now that's what they are doing. Call it a fluke, if you must, but no matter what it is I have been able to enjoy an entire month of baseball already and that is more than I got to do last year. So sit around and wait for the bottom to fall out and think that your team is better but remember, the Cardinals have been THE team in the Central for almost ten years and your team sucks.
P.S. It annoys me to hear Brewers' fans getting all cocky like they are the team of the century. When was the last time you won the division? The NLCS? The Series?

It is a fluke. What I posted breaks down exactly how nearly impossible it would be for the Cardinals to maintain those very-definition-of-flukey pitching numbers for most of the season. It would be like me expecting the Cubs to keep scoring 100 runs over all their home games each month.
The Brewers fans are cocky because they have a good, cheap, young team. Granted, it's not a bunch of has-beens, busts and injuries + Pujols jury-rigged together by desperation, voodoo and LaRussa's booze-sweat, but it just might do for some time to come.
midwestjeff

The thing is that they don't have to maintain their current pitching brilliance to keep winning. It's not like every game they win is by one or two runs. A couple homers here and there won't turn every win into a loss. They are also beating teams in their division so even if they are bad hitting teams they are the teams that the Cardinals will play the most.
It's on now, I am forwarding your post to the Cardinals staff to put up in the locker room for this weekend's series. Sweep time!
I really wanted to refute the "has-beens, busts, and injuries" comment but it is pretty spot on. The only thing is that when they are put together they make a winning team so I don't mind.

You are damn right that we have a good, cheap, young team.
Seriously...the next 4-5 years we are going to see the same core at or near the top of the division during that time frame. We haven't seen that in years.
Plus, the organization has done it the "right way" and not thru the free agent market. They built a solid system that is likely to sustain over time.

Hey Epo, is there any word on P Zach Jackson? He crashed on my couch for Spring Training a couple years ago. I know he got called up for like 6 starts or so in '06 but I don't think he played above AAA ball last year. Do you know anything of his status with the Brewers?

I've said it before and I'll say it again...I do not want Ned Yost gone. I like Yost as a manager and think he has done a great job with his roster.
I think he's a creative manager who isn't afraid to try things. Heck, he did win a game on Saturday by using a suicide squeeze with Prince Fielder on third base!

I believe Jackson had a pretty rough year in AAA last year, which surprised alot of people. Remember Jackson did pitch pretty well in 2006 in those starts. However he did have a really good spring training this year and is supposed on the short list for this year's call-ups.
From what I know, Jackson, Chris Naverson and Jeff Weaver are all available for the Brewers to call-up in case of injuries at this point. I would hope we don't see Zack Jackson until September, but if needed I'm sure he'll be fine...plus he's a lefty which isn't the worst thing.

Shocker. Hey, kid, we're gonna mess with your mechanics...then, instead of giving you time to adjust, we're going to yank you as quickly as possible every start, and then give you 9 days between your last starts and then flip out when you're rusty.
But remember...don't DREAM of getting rid of Marquis somehow. That's forbidden.
I'm betting Lou starts Fontenot today over Cedeno, too.

I was sitting there in the eighth thinking how nice a sweep would be, putting the Brewers back 8 games and really burying them for a while. Then in comes the Izzydozer. I won't be surprised if he turns up with another arm problem in the next week or so.
Oh well, at least you enjoyed it.

To be honest...Milwaukee has been on the verge of putting it together for the past week but just couldn't make it work. Izzy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think LaRussa will stick with him for a while, but if not it will likely be a closer-by-committee situation with Franklin and Villone as the ninth inning guys. LaRussa likes to focus on left vs. left and right vs. right so the two would probably be used accordingly. That would put Izzy in a set up role for a bit and give him a chance to straighten his head out. He claims that he feels no discomfort and it is all in his head so a couple of good innings will likely solve his problems. Izzy said yesterday that the team needs to do something and is willing to be bumped but LaRussa isn't on the same page just yet. It also might help if the team would add to their leads rather than scoring early and then riding it out to see what the bullpen can do. I know it is Izzy's job to take care of close games but a few 4-5 run victories would also be a nice break for him. I never would have thought, and you can tell be my early April posts, that Izzy would be one of the major problems at any point this season. If worst comes to worst, they could just set a tee up at home plate and go with ten fielders in the ninth. Is that an option?

I made a mistake yesterday, saying a sweep would put the Cards 8 ahead of the Brewers. I didn't realize it was a 4 game series. First, that would've put them 9 ahead of the Brewers, and second, I would never think a 4 game sweep possible. Three out of four is ok though.

Hey, you'll never find me propping up a guy like that. Signing him and continuing to start him is as dumb as dumb can get. The Cubs need to trade for another starter, period. And not only that, it needs to be a solid #2 pitcher at the least. If they want a real shot at the playoffs and then staying there, you need 2 guys you can hinge the playoff pitching if need be. The Cubs only have one right now. Even if Lilly keeps it up and has another good year, he's not that guy. Rich Hill can be a very good pitcher, but he's not that guy. Dempster is pitching out of his mind right now, but the odds of that holding up are slim to none. They need to pump up their starting rotation, no way around it.
Now if you want to sit there and think the Cardinals have what it takes to go into October, hey, that's you. That's also pretty delusional.

I'm banking on the return of Carpenter. If he comes back 100 percent and they have Wainright behind him I like their chances. (Assuming the lineup holds up and Izzy gets back to normal.) For now, I just hope the bottom doesn't completely fall out. Mulder can suck a dick. I think Lohse is a solid 3, or maybe Piniero. It all depends on a healthy Carp. All I really know is that it's good times in the Central right now and turning out to be a pretty good season all around.
