Last night I was talking to a few friends about deep frying and first was wings then oreo's and then I heard about a Snickers bar and that got me to thinking ... What's the strangest thing you've cooked and how ?

When I lived in Dillsburg, PA, deep-fried pickles were considered a delicacy. I considered them gross.

In England, the Mars Bar is the deep fry candy bar of choice.
My favorite "you fry what???" has got to be this, from the chef of the amazing WD-50.
Fried mayonnaise.

(And, as a side note, when I ate at WD-50 once, I had the "oysters" except it was really essence of oysters frozen in liquid nitrogen, served in the shell. Looked like Dippin' Dots.

I had a deep fried twinkle when we went to Seaside a couple of years ago. Delicious! I wish I had a recipe for that.

I hadn't been to Hooters for a while, I went the other day and to my disgust saw deep fried pickles on the menu. Why must the lowly cucumber be treated so? Its been properly ruined by the pickling process, but Hooters has to add insult to injury. Deep fried vinager soaked cucumbers, yummy.

How can you go wrong with deep frying anything. I love to take old pasta and deep fry that dip it in marinara sauce.
I wonder how a deep fried baby would taste?

Deep fried sausage and a host of other items. I've been there once and only got the fish. I'll try some of the other stuff eventually.

We've had deep fried pickles on a few occassions. The best where these kosher dill spears at Insano's, a restaurant in Asbury Park that sadly went out of business.

We've done this a couple times, deep fried large raw spinach leaves.
Little bit of salt, and you have a tasty chip.

Frying is so unhealthy. I like the shake and bake twinkies better. They're healthier.

Deep Fried Twinkie Recipe -
1 Mix together milk, vinegar and oil.
2. In another bowl, blend flour, baking powder and salt.
3. Whisk wet ingredients into dry and continue mixing until smooth. Refrigerate while oil heats.
4. Push stick into Twinkie lengthwise, leaving about 2 inches to use as a handle, dust with flour and dip into the batter.
Rotate Twinkie until batter covers entire cake.
5. Place carefully in hot oil. The Twinkie will float, so hold it under with a utensil to ensure even browning.
It should turn golden in 3 to 4 minutes.
Depending on the size of your deep fryer, you might be able to fry only one at a time, two at the most.
6. Remove Twinkie to paper towel and let drain. Remove stick and allow Twinkie to sit for about 5 minutes.
7. Throw Twinkie in the trash.

I knew a guy who would deep fry uncooked pasta. He'd then put cinnamon sugar on it. It was kinda like a cracker. Not bad.

Tonight at Momofuku Noodle Bar, I had fried sweetbreads. They were awesome.
Then, later at Public, as I left and watched the moon eclipse, I realized I had fried grasshoppers in December when I was in Mexico.
NYC rocks.

holy shit i miss Mars bars, i dont know if they're obsolete elsewhere in the country but i know that last one i saw here was about 10 years ago.
I'd gladly pay upwards of 85 cents on the dollar to get a couple shipped to me.
I had my first deep fried turkey last thanksgiving and i'll never ever go with anything different. it was hands down the best poultry ever.
