View Full Version : Slam Dunk or Home Run?

This was brought up on the show and it's a good debate, I think.

Slam Dunk Contest or Home Run Derby?

I like the Slam Dunk Contest more because of the announcers and the players watching just go fucking nuts to the dunks. Listening to Kenny Smith (?) go fucking crazy over the Howard dunks just makes the contest so much better.

Although, I could do without Magic Johnson telling me how much the contest is back. Every year.

Hey, you're tall... jump up and put this ball in that basket.

Sorry, but I've never seen the excitement in the slam dunk. It's over in seconds and only looks cool in slow-mo.

But you crack a home run... follow that ball out of the stadium... hear the crowd cheer getting louder... and in a game, trot around the bases. That's fun.

There were better dunks in the All-Star game than there were in the contest.

Give me the home run derby. To keep driving them out of the ball park after a couple of rounds is the more impressive feat.

Derby. Nothing beats watching a guy hitting 10 plus and knowing he is going to be exhausted in the nest round. Most of the dunks have been done and its hard for originality
come through.

I thought the dunks this year were creative.

I like both contests.

Dunk contest has no chance cause there are way more baseball fans on here then basketball

I'm surprised there are still basketball fans anywhere.

it has been awful the past couple years, but its coming back. This year has been noticibly better, including quality of games and play, then past years. The dunk contest resurgance is almost a good comparison to how basketball has been as a whole. Even ratings are going up I believe. It helps alot that the east got better too, so the league as a whole is more competitive

great points. If they rose the hoop a couple of feet it might be considered as difficult as driving one out. It just seems like anybody in the NBA can throw one down. Very few baseball players that can jack one on command.

then again I don't know shit cuz I can't do either one. They are both amazing athletic feats.

in fairness to the dunkers, 3 of the 4 asked to raise it to at least 11 feet. and Howard asked for that last year as well. The NBA keeps saying no, its retarded

I think also cause the HR derby takes place on a regulation field. You have to hit the same distance in a game for a HR as the derby. So they want you to have to dunk on the same hoop for the contest as in a game. I guess

I don't follow basketball much. Thanks for bringing me up speed on the raising of the rim.

I didn't say in my first post, but I meant that the bar for the whole game (regular season, dunk contest, etc..) does need to raised. Lower scoring basketball is better for me. I think 120pts in a game is boring, but I am stuck with the T'wolves so I guess I don't experience it much.

I like the Home run contest cause the winner can't throw it over the fence from 3 feet away if he's about to come up short.

Then you must have LOVED basketball before the last couple of years. Because it was fucking awful and teams were scoring like 80 points a game.

With MJ, Bird or Magic, teams routinely scored over 100 points a game, yet there was still defense. I loved those games.

I was 'Tom ' today when I called and explained my reasoning behind why the homerun derby is so awful. Chris Berman's commentary and self-importance is just worthless. Why/How he names every local burgh when a Homerun is hit is both simple and silly. He is the worst so by proxy; the Homerun Derby is equally sucky. Now, the old Homerun Derby TV show that sometimes still plays on ESPN Classic was great.

Derby, by far.

I will say though that this year's dunk contest made me nostalgic for the days when I gave a fuck about basketball. Enough that I may start to follow it a little bit again. Ok, probably not, but I was at least reminded that I used to love it.

home run, not even close. i saw a dunk contest in person (at fordham when the ncaa tourney was hosted locally, in the late 90s i believe) and it was even more boring than on tv. the highlights of the dunk contests are good, but then there's an awful lot of tedium in-between and it's all so subjective you might as well be watching synchronized swimming as far as an athletic contest goes.

Dunk contest in a landslide. That cupcake dunk beats any slabtoe you'll see in a homerun contest. A homerun in a pivotal game situation beats a dunk of any variety whatsoever.

Whenever someone gets on a roll in a home run derby, it's exciting as hell.

Hey, where's the QB Challenge as an option? Bastards.

I was a huge fan of the old Home Run Derby show. I wish they'd modernize it. Film it during teams off days before a series.

For example, let's say the Tigers are in town to face the Yankees. If there's a day off before the series, have the top HR hitters of each team (Sheffield and A-Rod) have a HR Derby with a monetary prize going to the winning player's favorite charity.

At All-Star Break, the top 8 players (4 from each League) with the best totals, regardless if they made the All-Star Team or not compete in the Home Run Derby Finals with a larger prize given to the winner's favorite charity.

that might be the worst idea ever! MLB and all the owners would never want to take a chance of getting a player hurt. .most importantly the players should be able to rest on their days off.

Give me the home run derby. To keep driving them out of the ball park after a couple of rounds is the more impressive feat.

That reminds me -- I'm actually more impressed by the 3-point shot contest than the dunk contest. To keep your shooting rhythm from different spots on the floor over a couple of rounds is pretty damn hard to do.

I miss watching Larry Bird dominate those contests in the 80s.
