LATE FRIDAY NIGHT

Matty sees a deal on SlickDeals.net for an HDTV at Target. "Well, I can afford that," he says to himself.

Matty realizes that he can watch Daytona in HD, something he's been wanting to do.

SATURDAY MORNING

Matty calls up Comcast. "Say, I'm going to get an HDTV today. Is there anything special I need to set up with my cable box in order for it to work?"

Comcast CSR: Well, you can rent the box for 9 dollars, and getting the HD signal is 6 dollars.

Matty: "I already have a digital cable box. Do I need a different one?"

Comcast CSR: Let me check your account. No.

Matty: OK. Don't turn anything on yet. Let me get the TV first and I'll call you back.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

Matty visits Best Buy and Target, and they don't have the TV he wants in stock. "Darn," he says.

SATURDAY EVENING.

Matty visits another Target, and they DO have the TV he wants. Matty buys it, and goes out for a celebratory dinner with Chet, Baz, and Chet's girlfriend.

SATURDAY NIGHT

Matty calls Comcast again.

"Hi, I'd like to turn on my HD signal now."

Comcast CSR: OK, sir. You need to get a new converter box first...

"That's not what I was told this morning..."

Comcast CSR: Well, you can pick it up on Monday at your local office...

"OK, the main reason why I got this was to watch Daytona in HD. Monday does me no good."

Comcast CSR: I'm sorry.

Liars. They absolutely fucked this up. And I'm pissed. And there's no way to watch this in HD now.

It really is pathetic how stupid the CSRs at cable companies are. It's like they hire the dumbest people they can find and then give them absolutely no training. The same goes for Cablevision. Almost none of them know their ass from a hole in the ground.

There should have been absolutely no reason that anyone that they are paying would not have known this about needing a special HD box.

In his defense, regardless of if he knew or not, he did specifically ask the person if he needed a different box. It's their fault for not having a clue which frankly boggles my mind that they can employ people that don't know what they are doing and continue to get paid for it.

I feel for you and totally agree, Comcast sucks balls. The same thing, almost, happened to me. Called in, was told I needed a new box, the cost, etc. Went and stood in line for over an hour, with my 2 year old son no less, to get my new HD/DVR box - left with a receipt stating I did indeed receive just that. Full of excitement, I arrived home to set it up. I went to connect the HDMI cord to the box and of course there was no HDMI connection, and to make things better it was not a DVR box. I called explained my situation to a very smug lady who told me, "sorry sir, I too have to sacrifice for things I want, you will have to go back to the office and wait in line." I guess I was the bone head for not checking the thing out before I left the building.
Just my lame story, but a heads up if you do go in and pick up a box - check it out before you leave.

You didn't know that you would need a different box for HD?

I had a feeling I would, but I wasn't sure. The HD channels on the digital box right now "come in", but say "subscription needed", like any digital channel that I don't have subscriptions to.

That's why I called in and asked, but the first CSR wasn't Stateside, she had a very thick accent. The second one I spoke to sounded like the guy in the Quizno's Sammies commercial.

Go to Best Buy, get antenna, watch race, return antenna, claim "it doesn't work as well as I thought it would."

I'm also in an area that might not pick up great over-the-air HD signal, but we'll see.

I was thinking exactly the same thing!

I'm not even anti-NASCAR; it just seems like kind of a "waste" for HD. Big screen I get, but HD I don't. You aren't going to catch a whole lot more than you normally would (IMO).

However, it does suck that the rep didn't give Matty the right info - they should automatically know what is going on and easily be able to provide the correct info.

Although it is also common knowledge that you need an HD box to convert the signal...

NASCAR in HD is incredible. 42 colorful cars racing at speeds approaching 200mph should be enough. Even if you aren't a fan, check out a race, preferably a night race in HD.
It is like when some people tell you to go watch NASCAR or Hockey in person before fully judging it, take a peek in HD.

The point was, I kind of had a feeling I needed a new cable box, but when I called comcast to confirm, they said no. With the technology constantly changing, I don't know if you needed a box for HD or not.

Here's my next question:

Fox standard-def is wide screen. Fox High-Def currently is sharp but only takes up part of the screen. As someone who is High-Def newbie, I take it this is normal and that when a real High-Def broadcast comes on tomorrow, it'll look "normal"?

I got a 32" magnavox from Target. I bought the floor model, which you can only do when something has been discontinued and there's no more stock in the back. Final price after a 150 discontinued discount + 30% floor model discount = 350.

Not everything on an HD channel is wide screen. The SD programming is upconverted but in the same picture format so it will come with bars on the side of the screen. If you are really getting Fox HD Daytona will come in weidescreen HD.

Wow. I am so full of hate right now, I think the first person who looks at me cross-eyed is gonna get their ass whooped.

As documented on this board, my wife and I have gone back and forth about Comcast and Direct-TV. I finally relented and got Comcast.

Today was the install at our new house.

Now, we have BEAUTIFUL bamboo hardwood floors in our family room. It's one of the things I adore about this house.

The motherf'ing jackass does the following:

1) Scratches the hardwood floor by moving around an upside-down DVR box along the floor.

2) Gets into a screaming match with me because somehow, between last night and this morning, the AV ports on my brand-new HDTV went bad.

3) CHarges me 45 bucks for this lovely experience for a "new install" - even though the house was already wired for cable and ready to go, it just had to be turned on.

I'm FURIOUS.

Nope, I checked. It was one of the first things I checked when we started moving prep.

To make matters worse, I was assured by Comcast we were going to get New York channels - and we don't. We don't get several channels in High-Def such as Channel 11 and Channel 9, which means that I'll have to watch at least one Yankee game a week in Standard Def, unless I can get the signal OTA.

I also don't know if the High-Def channels are the Philly or NYC high-def stations. If they are Philly, we are going directly to DTV.

I may win out on this after all; if the service is that shitty I may flip over to DirecTV, because that was just totally unacceptable. Not worth enough to bitch to Consumerist about, but I'm really livid about this.

We have horrible Time Warner out here in Ohio

Sounds like the same pricing that Cablevision rapes us with every month. We pay $136 a month for the family plan, HBO, and internet. I have thought about dropping down to basic, but the last time I spoke to them they said that would only allow me to watch CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, 9, 11, and PBS. They are vampires, and the alternatives suck right now. Vios around here seems to be more problems than it is worth, everyone I know that gets it have to have the techs back numerous times to get everything working. My boss was without a phone in his house for a week because Vios fucked up his phone. I hate them all.

Try having a tivo and needing to get the cable cards "installed" by Comcast.

I had a working tivo (after SIX different appointments to get the cards installed) that finally shit the bed. So tivo sent me a new one and it turned out that I couldn't just switch the cards from one tivo to the other. So I had to schedule an appointment (2 1/2 weeks) to get the cards "installed". When this tech left, it still wasn't working correctly. It turned out it was because the PROFESSIONAL COMCAST CABLE TECHNICIAN plugged the cable into the "antenna" input and not the "cable" input. So I switched them, the cable cards started working, but I couldn't get anything above basic cable. I called and comcast told me they'd need to send out another technician (I actually didn't believe the person on the phone so I called back to get someone more competent and ended up with the SAME person). The tech came out the next day and was at my house for FIVE hours. He showed up with a new cable box and had no idea what cable cards were. After getting another tech to come over with cable cards, they got the first cable card to work and made the 2nd one stop working completely.

By the time they left, they had tried 6 different cable cards and none would work. They even left saying "your tivo won't switch tuners anymore, it's broken" and told my wife there was a problem with the tivo and it wasn't comcast's problem. She made them leave the 2nd cable card, which, when I came home, I plugged in and it worked perfectly.

I so wish I could have directv again or fios was here.

before hurricane Ike i had comcast, and i hated them. cable lines are still down where i live and i had to use my pda as a modem at dial up speeds. i had hughesmet installed the other day, and i have "high speed" internet again, except the first day i went over my fair usage. what the fuck is that? nobody told me shit about that when i had it installed. i get 400 Mb a day, unlimited between 2 am and 5 am, but fuck that shit!!!!! if you could track your usage you'd see how fucked up it is. fuck hughesnet in the ass. i wish i had comcast! fuck you texass you piece of shit hurricane ridden fuck stain of a state!

I can trump all of these

We have horrible Time Warner out here in Ohio

First there was no NBC HD channel so it had to be watched on Hurting Definition

Then about a month ago they were running ads about how NBC would be dropped by Time Warner because Time Warner wanted to increase the money paid to run it and the NBC affiliate doesnt want an increase because it could start the cycle of Time Warner charging more for CBS, Fox and ABC

So as of Friday 10/3 at 12:15 AM there is no NBC on our cable system, trump that if you can

I missed a whole season of Yankee games because YES and Cablevision were in a year long sissy slap fight.

Comcast has a fair use agreement also that went into effect on Oct 1st, they also love to throttle their speeds.

I have comcast for my internet and directv for my television. Had no problems in the installs. Sucks to be you. :)

And I would have went with DTV for tv, it's HD channels are much higher quality than comcast.

the worst part o that fair trade or whatever bullshit is that i don't have tv, so i get l my shows by download, and itunes doesn't have a set time for download option, so i have to set an alarm to download my shows. faggots.

I guess with the contractors, it's a crap shoot. We've had them here twice, and both times, the service was very, very good. And both of them had to do a considerable amount of work involving replacing the cable between the house and pole. One of them noticed that our signal amplifier wasn't up to par. He gave us a new one for free. He got a $20 tip for his troubles. The second guy saw that the gauge of the cables inside the house were too small. After I measured all of the cables for him, he cut new, larger gauge ones, attached better couplings, and didn't charge us a dime.

Well, it appears I won't get my New York local channels in HD. Only Philly. Which would be OK, except that I'm a Jets fan.

The call is going in to DirecTV tomorrow.

Oooh wait. DirecTV has a referral system. We can both make $50 on this.

Hm. I like money.

BTW, do you get the New York HD channels? ABC, CBS? I'm putting in my zip code and DirecTV is telling me I'm getting the Philly Stations too.

I get the Boston channels. I see the other city's channels in my listings, but I either don't subscribe to them or they are unavailable to my location.

I sent you a DTV email to your yahoo account.
