I hope Moss leaves. just because I hate the pats. I cant believe espn reported that the pats have taped every team they played and taped the walk through of the teams they were playing before the super bowls and no one on the board is talking about it.
steroids never bothered me in baseball but this kills me. they won all 3 super bowls by 3 points. it is a huge advantage if you know the defensice plays and positions. if you know the def is stacked right and in a short pass def. all you need to do is throw left and deep.
i hate everything about the pats, especially there coach.

Patriots, Moss reach agreement on three-year contract (http://www.nfl.com/freeagency/story?id=09000d5d807016ab&template=without-video&confirm=true)
Also, the thread title is misleading. The Patriots cheated in 2007, not 2008. The thread title is wrong.
Otherwise, we're going to have to add cheating to every other sports' team thread title, especially the Yankees.
-Arlen Spector is going to be pissed. The Eagles offered Moss more money but he still came back to the Patriots.

So every Patriot win last year, including all of those against the AWFUL AFC East, meant so much but now when they lose to a team in a dramitically imporoved AFC East, a team that had won 1 time while the Patriots had won 21 times, doesn't mean anything ?
Now all of a sudden a division game isn't so impotant.
Funny how that works.

no.....it's not. it could set him back, but it wont cost him the year. im shocked that not only did we have to suffer by losing him but apparently he has a knee that isn't even fixable (is that a word?). this injury keeps getting worse.

It will be six weeks before they even are able to reassess, and that's assuming they can stop the infection with antibiotics and don't have to operate again.
Then it's a nine month recovery times, with NO setbacks.
That would take him in to September 2009.
It's going to most likely require even more rehabilitation than that, because this is football (McNabb went through the same thing, minus the infection problems, last season).
I would say the best case scenario at this point, is that if everything goes perfect, he'd only miss the first month of the 2009 season.
Very rarely does this stuff go off without a hitch, though, in professional sports.
His 2009 season is very much up in the air right now.
And even if he comes back, he most likely won't be anything close to what he used to be, in 2009. QBs who have this generally take a full season, after recovery, to really strengthen the knee into playing shape.
To draw a parallel, it's like a pitcher the first season he comes back from Tommy John.
So either way, the Pats should be extremely concerned. I'd be stunned to see him on the field before October '09, and I'd say it's probably 50-50 he's going to even be ready by then.

The thing that's always bothered me about the Patriots is how secretive they've been about injury reports, and now this. It's like... WTF? Kind of like the Boy Who Cried Wolf in a sense.
One has to hope it's just an "infection" and not MRSA. If it's MRSA, forget his playing career, that could be a quality of life issue.
I made jokes before about Brady being injured, but that was under the pretense is that everyone comes back from knee injuries, and besdies which, Brady has enough success to get him into the HOF and then some.
But I won't joke about this; this is serious stuff.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—The NFL has rescinded a $20,000 fine levied against New England Patriots receiver Randy Moss for his comments about officiating.
The fine was withdrawn by Ray Anderson, the league’s vice president of operations, after a review, league spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday.
Moss’ remarks came after the Patriots lost 18-15 at Indianapolis on Nov. 2. The fine was never announced by the league.
Moss said at the time there were “some real iffy calls out there.” He added that good calls and bad calls are part of the game, and “you’ve got to live and die with them.”

I get what you're saying, believe me. But they only played a good half of a game tonight, they looked like absolute dogshit the entire first half. And truthfully if the Pats had won the game it would have been because the Jets lost it. You simply can't blow a 24-6 lead. Out of the four major IR guys they have right now I'm only excited about the return of Brady. Maroney is made of glass and has proven to be pretty much useless during his tenure with this team, they can plug any back in their system and they do alright. He's certainly nothing special as he's hesitant to hit holes hard and he's been injured through his whole time in New England. Rodney Harrison will be close to 106 years old and it seems fairly logical that he would hang em up. Thomas, showing marked improvement this season, will be a year older but I'd like to see him healthy next year. That leaves Brady, which I hope he can make it back as close to 100% as possible.
On defense, Tedy will be right behind Harrison as he will turn 105 next season and he really only makes plays now if somebody forgets to block him. Their defensive line is full of big names that have for the most part laid duds this season, being a year older certainly wont make them quicker or more explosive. As far as their corners are concerned I'm pretty sure I could make the Pats right now as a corner, top to bottom they are awful. I dont care what people say, I miss having a half way decent shut down corner like Asante Samuel. They only player on defense that i fucking LOVE right now is Mayo. He's a fucking freak and will be a force to be recokened with for years to come. But outside of him the defense is weak, plain and simple. Its something that needs to be addressed because if they improve at all on D then this team will once again be scary in 2009.
I still think they have a shot at sneaking in to the playoffs and once that happens it's anybodys game, but they must improve on defense to be successful at that next level.

Cassel looked good on the last drive, when it counted. Welker came up huge as usual. I still can't fathom how the Dolphins let him get away.
8-5 and in a 3 way tie for the division. The Colts are going to win the rest of the way out because they're playing High School Women's Soccer teams the rest of the way so hopefully the Ravens lose tonight and a Wild Card spot will start to open up as well.

i'll take a stab at this one....i dont know how far the Pats will go if they make the postseason but I do know it's not about being the "best" team, its about getting hot at the right time (one can argue that alone does make you the best team but that's another story). once you get to the postseason ANYTHING can happen. we can look at 2001 and you Giants fans can look at last year as perfect examples.
Their most pressing need is LBs. Why tank an entire season just to move up 15 odd picks to take a LB? If that's what you're rooting for as a player or a fan then you have zero desire to go out, be a professional and compete. hoping for a losing season just shows no class whatsoever.

No, the league would just find another reason to take the pick away from them.
I can't say I feel very confident that this years Patriots will go too far in the playoffs. Maybe we can ruin someone else's season this year.

im not saying tank the season and obviously things have worked out better than anyone could have imagined
im just saying that if they dont go on a 01 patriots like run and finish lets say 8-8 or 9-7 miss or make the playoffs but draft 20 something when if they won only 4 or 5 they'd draft 5th and get some stud linebacker or what have you

isnt that kind of a silly question though? hindsight is 20/20. ask any playoff team that doesn't win the Super Bowl if they'd like to be drafting number 1 overall and they would all say yes. It just doesn't happen that way. I'd rather be in the playoffs and take my shot.

but what bearing does that have on anything? the Pats are currently tied for the division lead with 3 games left. theyre playing football just like every other team out there (obviously minus the Lions). yea they lost Brady for the year, so what? a good team will rise above adversity, and that includes injuries

If they win the division it's been a fantastic year considering the start. We don't need/can't afford a low draft pick. We have important things like resigning Wilfork to spend money on. big bucks on rookies isn't part of our M.O.
If we don't make the playoffs we still get a mid round pick.

yea i think i get you, i guess we're just repeating ourselves. what im saying is ask any fan or any player, the goal is to win a championship. anything less then that is a failure. so if the pats dont win the title, then i think they failed. would i like them to have a high draft pick? sure.
if the giants dont win the super bowl, would you like to have them drafting in the top 3? i bet you would.
i just dont get what you keep saying about Bradys impact on this situation. that would be like me saying, 'given the fact that you lost Osi for the year, would you like to be drafting higher if you don't win the Super Bowl?'

well obviously losing brady greatly reduced the pats chances of winning anything this year, or at least that was the perception at the time
same with osi, losing him greatly reduced the giants chances of repeating, or so we thought
but yeh if losing osi ultimately costs us the repeat b/c he's not there, how you quantify that i dunno, but if you could, then yes i'd rather suck ass for a year get a top 5 draft pick and see what develops
obviously QB is a bit more important of a loss vs a DE, but look at a few yrs ago the giants sucked, drafted 4th, traded for eli and thats working out quite nicely for the giants
to me it makes no sense for a team or franchsie to be mediocre and go 8-8 or 9-7 and either miss or just make the playoffs and get bounced in the first round and get amid first draft pick when a few less wins maybe gets you in top 5
to me in the long run the better thing for a franchise is a better pick that could turn into a franchise player vs saying you won 9 games and played in 1 playoff game one year

Cassell is almost definitely unavailable for Sunday's game at Oakland, as he has taken a leave after the death of his father earlier this week. Kevin O'Connell is likely to start. He has four career passes, coming on the blowout loss to Miami this year. Bruschi is likely out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Wilfork and Warren have been limited in practice as they deal with injuries.

That pretty much sums it up. Brady gone 7 minutes into the season, countless other injuries, Cassell getting his legs, etc etc. They still went 11-5. I honestly expected a .500 record if not worse. The depth of this team is outstanding, and they should feel good even though the season is over. Well done, Pats. Let the offseason madness begin.

i've been trying to disect this problem for the past few days and really the Pats are in a little bit of a jam next season. ESPN keeps saying Brady is really behind and probably won't play next year. If that's the case, Cassel needs to be the starter. Now in order for that to happen they have two options, A) grossly overpay him or B) franchise him and pay the rate for his position. knowing the history of the Patriots organization they will choose option B, which is clearly the smart play. but what that does is add a ton of money to the books and lessens the chance they will sign some form of shut down corner (like that Adumdfkdsvnobe Nobijscjsncce guy from Oakland) or young linebacker. they can attempt to adress that problem in the draft but then you're drafting unproven rookies that might not even be ready to play in their first year. ultimately, this creates quite a problem for the Patriots and im unsure how they'll solve it.

oh im not fully buying into it either, but its just something that i do take interest in because it effects both my favorite team and player. nonetheless ESPN did have the curtousy at the end of the article to say that sources close to both Brady and the Patriots flat out deny any problems with his knee and insist he's right on schedule. ive also seen videos of him at their facility in foxborough peaking out of the weight room so if he's up there and in the weight room something has to be going right. time will tell though.

FRANCHISE TENDER WILL TRIGGER $14.4 MILLION PAYDAY FOR CASSEL
Posted by Mike Florio on January 2, 2009, 11:52 a.m.
A reader has forwarded to us the 2008 cap numbers for the five highest-paid quarterbacks, and we’ve confirmed via a league source that the numbers are indeed accurate.
Here they are: (1) Peyton Manning, $18,704,320; (2) Tom Brady, $14,621,320; (3) Carson Palmer, $13,980,001; (4) Eli Manning, $12,916,666; and (5) Brett Favre, $12,000,000.
It works out to an average of $14,444,461.40 — and that’s the amount of the one-year tender that the Patriots would have to extend to quarterback Matt Cassel if/when the franchise tag is applied to him.
Given that Brady’s cap number in 2009 will be $14,626,000, franchising Cassel will tie up more than $29 million in cap space in only two players.
