so i have 2 dogs and a cat. the cat has free roam (inside/outside whenever through a cat door) the dogs hve almost free access to the back yard, unless noone is home. i have never had a problem with fleas before and i have had one dog for 11 years and the cat for 3 years. in the last few months the dogs are scratching themselves crazy. i have given them (and the cat) atvantage plus, frontline, flea collars, flea baths & flea dips. nothing is working and i am feeling worse and worse for them everyday. the cat doesn't seem to be effected, but the dogs are suffering.:glurps:
so... any suggestions? (i did not put this in "that's life" because it didn't seem to fit, but please give me some honest advise that has worked for you) :smile:thanks in advance.

i bet you're killing the fleas that are on em, only to have em get re-infested by fleas in your filthy animal ridden home.
you're sort of filthy.
bomb your house.
filthy.
dirty.

stupid question, are you sure its flea's and not maybe dry skin or allegies or something else, have you given them a new type of food lately?

allot of the food is junk, even the expensive stuff.
Confirm it is flees....if they are in agony, you should be able to take the dog to the middle of the floor, roll him on his back and look in the hair on his belly.
If there are fleas, you will find them.
A dog we just got was constantly scratching, we bathed her, did flea drops and nothing helped.
I then got some doggy vitamins, from a petstore, said they were for skin and coat health, they were like $10 a bottle, and within a week was better.
also dogs are known to get dry skin in houses with forced air.

when i bathe them i find dead fleas in the water. i was thinking of trying that "dinovite" stuff that xm advertises but i haven't yet. as far as the new food thing, no. they have been on eukanuba forever.
this pisses me off because both frontline and advantage plus say they work for a month but after a few days they are scratching again. i am treating the akita (11 year old) with a hydocortizone spray from the vet. it helps to reduce the scraching but nothing has cured the problem. as far as filth, my wife is compulsively clean because she has allergies and i have mild asthma; daily vacuum and every other day mopping of entire house (it's only 1200 square feet so it ain't a big deal). we have spent over $200 in the last two months on treatments and such and i am at wits end.
any other suggestions???

When I was a kid we had a flea problem like that. We had to bomb the house. It worked well.

i work in the pest control industry and the stuff we use eliminates all fleas in the house in a fairly short amount of time

i work for orkin pest control and what we use is something called precor 2000, i dont think they sell it to the general public, its in an aerosal can
we spray inside the home covering the floors, rugs, etc.
you ( and any pets) have to leave the home for 2-3 hours to let it work, so you're not walking over it and making the chemical travel to other parts of the home
as for the backyard we use a product called talstar and it also works great for keeping out most insects but its mostly used for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes

When my son was very small, we had an outdoor cat that brought home fleas. Since the boy was so close to the ground, I started researching some more "organic" solutions. The only thing that worked was cloves. In fact, after using the cloves once, we never got fleas again.
I liberally sprinkled crushed cloves (fresh cloves I crushed myself) all over the floors (had hardwood, linoleum and carpet) - left it on for a few hours and then vacuumed. The house smelled really good too.

gently place your pets in hefty bags and zip-tie the openings. check back in 2 weeks. that should take care of the problem one way or another.

thanks for the info. i am going to the pest control outlet today and see if i an get the precor and talstar.
i live in the north west tampa area so maybe i'll call orkin.
thanks again
i might try the cloves as well since nothing can hurt.

I'm really surprised the Frontline didn't work. When I first got my dog, he had lived the first 7 months of his life, completely outdoors. He was totally infested. After using Frontline for a month or so, not only was he free of fleas, but so was the house. It doesn't repel the fleas. It kills them. When he was in the house, the fleas in the rug would get on him again, and die. No bombing was needed. I've had him for 3 years in March. Been using Frontline the whole time, and there haven't been any fleas since.
