I cannot access the admin account in Vista. I've googled and tried the usual methods, to no avail. I'm trying to install a BIOS update, as part of a troubleshooting maze because my Team Fortress 2 suddenly stopped working. Any ideas...?

Admistrator priveleges should be enough to do whatever you need from your usual account. How does the bios update run? You may need to right click on the executable and select "Run As Administrator".

The Administrator account is disabled by default. In order to enable it, you have to go to MMC, load the Users and Groups snap-in, and then enable it there. You shouldn't need it though.

I did try the Run As option already, both by going to the exe properties and the right click...also, Vista Home Premium doesn't allow me to add the Local Users and Groups snap-in, so that's moot. I've tried creating a new user with admin priv.--nothing...tried running the update in safe mode--nothing...grrr! Thanks for the suggestions though...

You can try this:

For Windows Vista Home Basic/Home Premium:

1- Click Start, and type "cmd" in the search area, right click on "Command Prompt" and select 'Run as Administrator".

2- In the command prompt type "net users Administrator /active:yes" (Note the capital "A" in Administrator) and press Enter, you will get a confirmation as "The command completed successfully".

3- Click Start, and type "regedit" in the search area and click Enter, navigate to: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\System]
Double click on "FilterAdministratorToken" and set it to "0"

This should work:

- Click Start; go to Programs
- Find Command Prompt (should be in Accessories)
- Right-click Command Prompt, click 'Run as Administrator'
- Type the following command and press enter: net user Administrator /active:yes

I don't have a machine to test on, but that is the process. I have used it on Home Basic, but assume it will also work on Home Premium.

Let us know if it worked. :bye:

EDIT: Zen beat me to it. :furious:

Tried those things as well. damn thing just won't budge...it's really frustrating. the main issue is that my whole orange box stopped working. I got to the point of uninstalling it yesterday, trying to reinstall and now steam won't update...it installs fine, then tries to update, but stops at 26%...then crashes saying "you may only run one instance of steam at a time"...well, there's only one running...I've googled that problem as well, to no avail...might just be time to do a fresh install of vista...thanks for your help though guys...
