View Full Version : ...and Nathan's hot dog's were 5 cents...

Used to be kind of tortured when my grandfather would say things like that... "back in my day, a Nathan's hot dog was 5 cents."
Now, I find myself saying similar things.
Most recently, I fondly recalled the day when Marino's Italian ices came in a larger, waxed paper cup and in flavors which I can't find anymore, like Blue Gelati and Root Beer. They were also like 50 cents from the Ice Cream Man.
I just bought a box of them (Lemon was the only flavor I found) and not only that, the best part, the icey/syrup/slush part is definitely NOT like it used to be. Back in the day, the first thing we did after buying them was (using the wooden spoon) flip the whole ice over to get to the good stuff on the bottom.
Oh, I can go on with other examples. Progress is not always good...

I remember doing that! The bottom syrupy sweet slushy part was the best part of the whole thing!!! Cherry was my favorite.

I remember when people said - loudly - they would NEVER pay a dollar for a gallon of gas. Sadly, I remember when it was a lot less than that...

Still got em down our way, they're called Hugs, and you can get a case of 12 for $2.99.
That's 25 cents right? Wait a minute...2 over 3...carry the remainder... ah screw it.

I remember when Everlasting Gobstoppers came two in a package, for 25 cents. They were much bigger. I preferred the candy Big Jaw, which was just like them, around the same size, but had gum in the middle instead of sweet tart type candy.
Now, you can only find Gobstoppers in boxes for over a dollar and they are much smaller.
Not the same. Not the same...

Old School Bazooka bubble gum was 2 cents a piece and you could buy it by the piece!
It was awesome: it was hard and had a suspicious powder surrounding it when you unwrapped it from the comic.

New School Bazooka bubble gum you have to buy in packs of 10 or in boxes. It's totally different. Softer, no powder, and much lamer.

Also, back in the day you could buy the "Bazooka Log" which was a big tootsie roll style log of gum that was like a Lincoln Log but made out of gum and a big rectangular sized pieces of Bazooka, scored into two equal sized pieces, and which came with a puzzle piece card.

I used to love the crystallized bottom part too. I Slowly ate down though, until there was like a half inch left until I flipped it over. If I flipped it right away, I wouldn't want anymore after I had that part.
Does anyone remember ice cream called a "push up"?
It was in a tube with this stick that you used to force the ice cream up the tube? It was usually vanilla ice cream with a chocolate swirl. I used to like that one, because when it was done and all you had left was the paper tube and the push stick and the wheel, I would loosen the wheel on the stick and roll it along the ground and the disk would shoot off and roll really far.
I also remember sharpening ice cream sticks on cement until they looked like little swords.

Didn't it also have offers on the comics where if you save # of wrappers or for a small fee, you could get something back in return?

I hate to admit this but, when I was little, I got 25 cents a week for allowance. I could walk to the Country Store (the actual name of the store) and buy two Hershey bars and four pieces of gum.
Gas (leaded for my '75 VW Rabbit) was about 65 cents. When I started smoking, a pack was usually a buck, but I could sometimes find them for 80 cents.
Oh... and I remember when the Tonight show moved to LA.

those quarter drinks had such an acidy, artificial taste, but i drank them all the time.
plus, cut the empty plastic bottle in half and attach a balloon to the drinking end with a rubber band, and you had a great homemade pea-shooter!
