Oh, wow, that sucks. One of the all-time greats in terms of left of center comic book creators. He really helped bring that funky underground vibe to a little corner of Marvel back in the 70's with Howard and his work on (sexy!) the Man-Thing.
If you spot this collection, it's awesome:

Howard the Duck sucked in movie form, but the comic it was based on was one of the best satire titles ever. Gerber was still going strong in the last few years, putting out a cool title called Hard Time, about a young guy getting stuck in a supervillain prison. DC really fucked things up by not collecting the whole series and pulling the first trade out of print, but hopefully the attention as people remember him will give them the taint kick needed to get it collected.
Then they can finish up collecting Hitman and Shade the Changing Man and American Cenury. Jerks.
RIP, Steve. Never one of the biggest, but alwas one of the best. Any guy that brought us something called "Giant-Size Man-Thing" deserves alittle salute.
