I've been listing to an album by a chick named Devon Sproule. Really nice music. It's called "Keep Your Silver Shined". This song isn't on the album, but I just found and watched it, and now I really want to see her live with her band:

Nice work Stankfoot. I'll be hanging out here quite a bit.
Question..what is your definition of alt. country? I've come to use it to describe bascially anything you're not gonna hear on the radio. This encompasses the Lucinda Williams and the Wilcos, but also some more traditional sounds like Hank III and Red Stick Ramblers. Does that paint too broad a stroke for some of you?

Nah, I'm pretty much in the same boat. Ironically, I look at "alt.country" as pretty much anything that's either classic country mixed with a general "indie rock" sound, or anything that just generally resembles classic country/bluegrass/rockabilly/etc. and would never get play on shit like CMT or on the radio, so I use to describe Ryan Adams to Steve Earle to Willie Nelson to Johnny Cash.
As much as I love the genre, I don't feel I know nearly as much about it as I should. Can anyone reccomend some good comps? I only have one called Exposed Roots and the rarites collection Lost Highway put out a few years ago.

I say lets not get all hung up on the definition of 'alt country'. If it has a country "feel" to it and you like it discuss it here ....

The comments with those videos drive me nuts. People trying to explan away how she can't possibly be "country," as if something tagged "country" is automatically bad.
And people say I'm a snob.

I think I first heard Neko Case in '92, I believe. Before then I didn't even know you were allowed to make "country" music if it wasn't on the radio, and at the point I was getting fed up with "country music". I wound up subscribing to literature from Bloodshot Records, where I found more Neko, Waco Brothers, The Starkweathers, and of course Shooter when he broke. Good stuff.

I have a little crush on Emmylou. She looked great in Demme's concert film of Neil Young "Heart of Gold", for an older chick.
(that film's pretty great, too. Neil Young just may be my favorite musician)
edit: Now that I think about it, Neil Young maybe the Godfather of "alt-country"

Steve Earle has been a recurring character on The Wire and his awesome song "I Feel Alright" was the song used for the season two ending montage, which was their best so far. Here's the original music video...

He and Ryan Adams both started out in hardcore punk bands before making the shift to the twang. It's awesome to hear both of them on the Stranger's Almanac version of "Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight."

I like Hank III's complete throwback sound, but then again, I like that sound, and I know it's not for everybody. I grew up with a lot of Hank II in my life, and looking back I can appreciate how bad he was, in every facet. Musically, songwriting... His tribute show on CMT was embarrassing.
Oh, and congrats on 30,000 Mojo. And the way it happened couldn't have made me happier.

Whatever it's called, this type of music has been my favorite musical genre since 1983-1987 era Replacements.
I scrolled down until I saw the posting for what I consider the seminal band Uncle Tupelo. When I first saw them live it was an experience tantamount to what I imagine seeing Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 would have been (although in a totally good way); I just remember thinking history was being made.
Uncle Tupelo for me is like what Giotto was to art; an evolution away from traditional American Country music that assimilated broader rock influences much in the same way that Giotto broke away from the Byzantine/Gothic style of the day to usher in a new standard in representational painting.
Uncle Tupelo's album No Depression is the Scrovegni Chapel of Alternative Country.
Having said all this, I think Gram Parsons bears mentioning in this thread.

Poor Jay Farrar. After Uncle Tupelo and that first amazing Son Volt abum, everyone would hae been right figuring him to be THE alt.country figurehead for the forseeable future. No dice. Those subsequent Son Volt albums have been a fucking chorrrrrrrrrrre, man.

I check the site out all the time, but have never really wanted to join until reading this thread. And that's not an idictment on the site, I really do enjoy it, just decidied to observe rather than participate. Anyhow, I do enjoy me some alt country. No mention of the Silver Jews or even some of the Pavement material for that matter? Lucero is probably more of a dirty rock and roll than alt country but also enjoyable nonetheless. Those are just a couple that I noticed unmentioned.

Speaking of throwback sound, I have to mention Wayne "the train" Hancock. Maybe considered Texas swing, but this guy is amazing, especially on the live album "Swingtime". The closest thing to the original Hank you'll hear today....
Edit: Even if you don't buy this album, at least download "Thunderstorms and Neon Signs" by this guy. You won't be disapointed.

Been listening to a lot a Billy Joe Shaver lately, but didn't know alot about him personally, so I did some research. What a rough fucking life, and what a tough motherfucker. Did you know he shot a man in the face? Yeah I know, alot of old country guys did some bad shit in the past....
He did it last year.
Here's the blurb...
Shaver's attorney stated that Coker had threatened Shaver with a knife and that Shaver had shot in self-defense. Witnesses interviewed by police report hearing Shaver saying "where do you want it?" and then, after the shot was fired, "Tell me you are sorry" and "No one tells me to shut up." Coker told police the attack was unprovoked
He also had to teach himself to play guitar with three fingers after losing two in a sawmill accident.

Let's not forget one of my favorite bands, first saw them in 1994 and thought they would be the next big thing (in alt. country, at least.) And they just might be...
They are amazing live.
Ladies and Gents, I introduce you to Slobberbone:

Every Slobberbone studio album I've bought, I've ended up selling.
I hate it when that happens. They're like alt.country's version of the Roots.

MUCH LOVE FOR ROBBIE FULKS!!!!
I've seen him several times. Most recently last year in The Berkshires at this place called Club Helsinki and he was awesome (again.)
I remember seeing him at Mercury Lounge like 10 years ago along with the Old 97's and 5 Chinese Brothers. Amazing Show. I was there with the guys from the band Silkworm - that's another story...
"Let's Kill Saturday Night" is on an iPod playlist I made called "Soundtrack to My Life" and is one of the bestest songs ever.
He ended his set with an amazing cover of another favorite artist of mine who's debut album is a masterpiece: Help Me Mary by Liz Phair.

I'm going to see Wilco at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville next month (home of the Grand Ol' Opry). Thanks to fucking Stubhub and Ticketmaster I might not even get to sit with my chick.
I'm sure y'all know that XM-12 (X-Country) is a little alt.country, although not as much as it should be.
Scott Miller and the Commonwealth is a good alt.country.
I think Beck is too often overlooked as a great alt.country artist, as are the Rolling Stones.

Lucinda Williams' father (Miller Williams) lives and works in my hometown. He's actually a professor at the University of Arkansas. Anyway the last time she came here she played a very intimate show for about 3 or 4 hundred people and it was fucking great. She used to come back and play once a year or every 18 months but she has fallen off a little in the last couple years.
Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Pat Green, Robert Earl Keen, Son Volt, Jason Boland, Johnny Cash too many to name. I've seen Steve Earle four or five times, Lucinda three or four times and Son Volt at least twice. If anyone's interested in a GREAT festival you need to check out the Austin City Limits festival in September. I went year before last and in addition to some great alt country we saw Van Morrison, Tom Petty, G Love, Ben Harper and more. Good times.

<p>
Three brothers and their friend Christmas from upstate New York. I saw them open for Bright Eyes. They put on an awesome show. Reminded me a little of The Band mixed with a little Wilco.

Seeing this performance of Gram Parsons "Grievous Angel" by Ryan Adams (with a very unfortunate hair-do) and Emmylou Harris led me to more of Parsons work. He was amazing and this particular performance still gives me chills.

Did you get on Bloodshot Records mailing list yet? Their compilations are outstanding.
I completely agree. LOVE this one

I would reccommend this album if only for the cover of Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise" by the Unholy Trio, which amazingly finds a way to combine Public Enemy and "Dixie". The very first time I heard it, my jaw DROPPED in astonishment because I could not believe what I was listening to.
And that song by Mike Ireland and Holler on there.."Id Like To"....what a beautiful beautiful song

Nice one Mudo, I gotta track down that comp if for no other reason than the Public Enemy cover.
Been digging on this little band from Australia. No matter how bad your day is, this song will smooth you right out.

I'm bumping this thread because James McMurtrey is coming east this month. He doesn't get out this way that often.
Here's a link to his show dates:

Got to thinking about Rustin's alt-country playlist that was discussed on the show today... and remembered this thread from way back.
Anyone paying attention to alt-country probably already has Buddy Miller on their radar, but in case you dont...

Every time the alt country discussion has come up, I miss half of it for whatever reason. Was Jason Isbel brought up?
