Haven't listed to him much but currently obsessed with this version of "Magnolia Mountain":
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xGz_PQ-qJd4&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xGz_PQ-qJd4&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I wanna go to Magnolia Mountain
And lay my weary head down
Down on the rocks
Of the mountain my savior made
Steady my soul and ease my worry
Hold me when I rattle like a hummingbird hummin'
Tie me to the rocks of the mountain my savior made
Lie to me
Sing me a song
Sing me a song until the morning comes
If the morning come, will you lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
Til' I'm heavy like the rocks in the riverbed
That my savior made
I wanna be the bluebird singing
Singing to the roses in her yard
Roses in her yard her father grew for her
It's been raining like Tennessee honey
So long I got too heavy to fly
Ain't no bluebird ever gets too heavy to sing
Lie to me
Sing me a song
Sing me a song until the morning comes
And if the morning don't come, will you lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
Ti'l I'm heavy like the rocks in the riverbed
That my savior made
. . . please
We burn the cotton fields down in the valley
And ended up with nothing but scars
Scars became the lessons that we gave to our children after the war
There ain't nothing but the [truth/tunes] of Magnolia Mountain
Where nobody ever dies
Steady your soul and ease your worry
They got room
Lie to me like I lie to you
Hold me down until the morning comes
And if the morning don't come
Will you lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
Ti'l I'm heavy like the rocks in the riverbed
That my savior made
. . . please

Would you be jealous of me if I told you that I was at a show just like that one at the Hiro Ballroom in NYC a couple weeks after.
Actually it was the record release show for Easy Tiger.
So many sick shows from that tour.

If you're looking for some good songs try the video for New York New York which was shot on Sept 10 2001. It is very moving. Also try Burning Photographs, So Alive, and Firecracker.
I really like him, but his output is just too much. There is no filter with him. 9 official cds in 7 years. There are countless bootlegs, and outtakes that he releases himself. All in all though a really good performer and a great songwriter.

I really like him, but his output is just too much.
Why would you say you really like someone then tell us what you dislike about them?
I find this argument that he puts out too much work to be complete BS. If you are a record label, I can understand why you would hate it, but as a fan, it's all you could ask for!
He is prolific with his writing and he wants to share it with us. What is wrong with that? As a fan and a fellow musician, I couldn't be more appreciative to Ryan for sharing his musical thoughts with us.
And his shows are unbelievable. (If you are lucky enough to catch him in a good mood)
I've seen him play each time was different and each time I have such amazing memories.
Much is the same with each of his albums.
Long live Ryan Adams and the Cardinals.

While I can appreciate getting more from a very good artist, his output would be more welcomed...if it was of a higher quality.
There is nothing more aggrevating than listening to Jacksonville City Nights. Hell, if you combined Jacksonville, 29 & both Cold Roses albums....you might have one really good albums. As they stand now, I've got 4 mediocre-to-shitty CDs in my collection.

Oh, hells no. JCN is awesome...I think all of the stuff he's done with the Cardinals has been fantastic. Hooking up with them as his band is the smartest thing he's done...his days with Whiskeytown show he's strongest with some kind of stability in his backing band (even if only the drummer and fiddle player/backing singer were with him the whole time with Whiskeytown).
How come you don't like JCN? I always like it when he keeps the twang around, and that's easily the country-iest of his albums.
I found 29 to be the worst by far of those albums. There's officially one song I like on it. Hell, I have no idea why I still own the damn thing. But the other two that year I love.
He announced that a box set was coming out some time this year with official releases of all of his "lost" abums like 48 Hours and The Suicide Handbook. Can't wait.

I can kind of appreciate that. He does tend to only do a couple of takes and say "That's it!" on his records...
But once they have really worked out the songs live, it brings them to life. I suggest seeing a show to see what the songs become and what they should truly sound like.

Yeah, I know it's a stretch, but it was reported in a bunch of magazines, too, including EW. Here's hoping...
I really wish that the Whiskeytown reunion would happen that he and Caitlin always toss out there. Not get back together permanently...they talk about how every few years they'd like to just put out another album and then go back to their own things, then get do another album in a few years, and so on.
Man, I thought that Stranger's Almanac re-issue was coming out the last week of January. Tons of unreleased stuff gonna be on that.
As much as I love his solo stuff, he's never gonna top Whiskeytown for me. Driving down to see them in shit NC venues and throughout VA are some of my favorite memories with my VA friends.

And you would be wrong. Ryan Adams has a wealth of talent, and he knows it. But the problem with people like that is that they do not believe in an editor of some sort. Everything that comes forth from their head is genius. That's just not true. Even Dylan had some clunkers.
I always use SANDANISTA by The Clash. 3 albums wherein you had maybe 1 album side worth of decent material. More is better? Not always. More QUALITY? Absofuckinglutely.

I made the trip up to NYC just to see Ryan & The Cardinals do an opening set for Willie Nelson a few years ago at the Beacon. Fantastic. I had hoped he would join Willie for a song or set but no luck. It was around the time they were working together on Willie's album that Ryan produced and The Cardinals backed. This was my only show.
Ryan is my musical hero(cue Mariah Carey). Just an incredible songwriter. His music as a whole blurs the line between genres.
Does anyone know of any existing Patty Duke Syndrome material? I'm curious as to what kind of sound it was.

Nuts.
It doesn't make much sense...I would assume most to all of the unreleased stuff would be on the same label. Adams tends to talk out of his ass, but news of the set showed up in a bunch of major publications. I would assume that mean it was much further along officially than just Ryan shooting his mouth off, so hopefully it'll eventually be worked out. I have most of the stuff would be on it, but it would be nice to get versions of those songs that are final mixed and mastered.

my name is Foggy and i help Ryan talk about the hard stuff and also the funny stuff, and we don't do much in-between but it's always real.
This place is all about change.
A mirror.
To a life that is all about change.
Because change is life.
And life is hard but rewarding if you have the balls to roll with it and take the knocks.
There is light if you look for it.
And there is always hope.
And you will find a little of all that here.
And Pizza.

Since some of suicide handbook ended up on Gold it could be a label issue. Considering that was his first Lost Highway release and Heartbreaker was on Bloodshot. I assume he recorded most of it in between records. I could be wrong.
At least we'll get one song from this ESOPUS CD.

But how much was recorded for Bloodshot? It sounds like after Heartbreaker he moved to Lost Highway and everything since has been recorded for them. I assumed that was the deal with Suicide Handbook, that it was going to originally be his first Lost Highway record.

That, I do not know. It was purely speculation. It could very well of been part of the Lost Highway deal.
