If you don't like power pop, you are an awful person, and you cannot be my friend.
Please post your favorite power pop videos in this thread. Old stuff, new stuff, it doesn't matter.
Do it now.
I'll get it started with Moonbabies.

Oh, HELLS yes.
I'm so very gay for power pop.
From Big Star to the New Pornographers, I am a sucker for a killer hook and a jangly Rickenbacker.

I guess my definition is pop music written and played by a band (guitar, bass, drums and keyboards). It's the stuff that would fall under The Beatles if you were tracing it back like a family tree.

How are any of these groups/songs power pop? I know I'm playing the musical nazi card, but these are way off...no offense, but so are the Goo Goo Dolls, Big Country and Modest Mouse.
The best description of power pop I've ever heard talks about it as any band or album that sounds like their influences stopped dead at Rubber Soul and Pet Sounds. Think of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" as the template...it's an unabashedly corny and catchy genre of rock. The songs can't be too heavy or "epic" or even deep...it's about girls and having insanely catchy hooks. It's very jangle heavy and reliant on vocal harmonies and ultimately very, VERY simplistic.
It's easily the "gayest" of all the rock genres. In short, if the song has balls of any kind (from meanspirited snarkyness to out and out aggro), it's probably not power pop.
Some more examples:

I KNEW hojo would be the one crying in this thread. I knew he would have to "school" us on music again. Havent we learned? He knows everything and his definition of power pop is right and everyone else is wrong lol.
Green Day
Nirvana
Power Station
Goo Goo Dolls
have all at one time or another called themselves power pop.
The Cars - are def power pop.
Gin Blossoms too.
Im sure to hojo it's wrong but Ive always considered power pop to be simple guitar driven rock songs with catchy hooks and easy sing-along chorus with a strong drummer.
Doesnt matter when it came out.
Paul Westerberg & The Mats to me, are power pop at its best.
Power Station too.
Power pop (or powerpop) is a popular musical genre that draws its inspiration from 1960s British and American pop and rock music. It typically incorporates a combination of musical devices such as strong melodies, crisp vocal harmonies, economical arrangements, and prominent guitar riffs. Instrumental solos are usually kept to a minimum, and blues elements are largely downplayed. Recordings tend to display production values that lean toward compression and a forceful drum beat. Instruments usually include one or more electric guitars, an electric bass guitar, a drum kit, and sometimes electric keyboards or synthesizers. While its cultural impact has waxed and waned over the decades, it's among rock's most enduring subgenres
And for some reason alot of trios fall into that cat.

Yeah, boy, I was really "crying," wasn't I? There are differences between musical genres, and they show groups like Radiohead and Modest Mouse aren't power pop. I didn't come at this like I had to "school" anyone, nor am I trying to insult anyone or attack them over what they picked...I was just giving my opinion about a genre I'm really passionate over. You're the one trying to pick a fight.
Green Day
Nirvana
Power Station
Goo Goo Dolls
have all at one time or another called themselves power pop.
So if Dave Mustaine declared that Megadeth were power pop, we have no choice but to accept it?
Nirvana clearly had power pop influences...Cobain was no dummy in that regard. He was mixing up power pop sensibilities with a punk/thrash sound...basically mixing the Pixies with Cheap Trick. That said, they changed the sound enough that they really can't be considered actual power pop in the tradition of what kickstarted this thread.
Green Day is pop punk. I know a lot of people think pop punk and power pop are basically the same, but I personally disagree. That's just me. I think pop punk is too smartass or often too juvenile (not necessarily in a bad way) to be power pop. "Attitude"-wise, punk pop is too beholden to punkiness to be power pop, and the music is generally much sloppier and harsh than power pop. I do agree that Green Day made a really, REALLY good power pop album with Warning and plenty of songs on American Idiot are very power pop-ish.

I think the Goos and Replacements (and Husker Du) have definitely put out power pop songs at times over their careers, but I'd disagree that they can be summed up as "power pop bands." But man, their power pop songs are pretty awesome.
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xMe15tWC6gc&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xMe15tWC6gc&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I don't have any idea how Power Station could be power pop. That would mean Robert Palmer's solo stuff would be, too. I really like both acts, but both seem too over-synthed, over-produced and too beholden to R&B and soul to be power pop. But that's just me.
The Cars - are def power pop.
Gin Blossoms too.
Totally agree on both.

I disagree that the time doesn't matter. I don't think power pop can really be traced to anytime before the late 60's. And what's with the namecalling? Again, you're the one on the attack and picking fights here.

Yeah, the Wikipedia summary is pretty good on the technical side, but it really leaves a lot to be desired when talking about the general sound, feel and attitude of the genre. Magnet magazine did a fantastic issue all about power pop a couple years ago that anyone into the genre should try and track down.
And for some reason alot of trios fall into that cat.

Awesome pick.
They're out of print now, but Rhino put out a trio of stellar power pop comps in the 90's. Highly reccomended!
http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/4d/57/e740228348a050f78bb03110.L.jpg
They also did a volume for the 80's and one for the 90's.
Rhino also put out 2 UK power pop albums and 2 US power pop albums as part of their D.I.Y. series in the 90's, which is unfortunately out of print, but well worth seeking out.
Not Lame! Records is still putting out their International Pop Overthrow compilations, which offers 3 discs of contemporary power pop acts once a year. They're up to volume 10 now, and Not Lame is easily the best power pop-focused label around.

For those debating what is/isnt, here another [edited] opinion, via Allmusic dot com, not my opinion, but here ya go...
=
Power Pop is a cross between the crunching hard rock of the Who and the sweet melodicism of the Beatles and Beach Boys, with the ringing guitars of the Byrds thrown in for good measure. Although several bands of the early '70s — most notably the Raspberries, Big Star, and Badfinger — established the sound of power pop, it wasn't until the late '70s that a whole group of like-minded bands emerged.
What tied all of these bands together was their love of the three-minute pop single. Power-pop bands happened to emerge around the same time of punk, so they were swept along with the new wave because their brief, catchy songs fit into the post-punk aesthetic.
Out of these bands, Cheap Trick, the Knack, the Romantics, and Dwight Twilley had the biggest hits, but the Shoes, the Records, the Nerves, and 20/20, among many others, became cult favorites.
During the early '80s, power pop died away as a hip movement, and nearly all of the bands broke up. However, in the late '80s, a new breed of power pop began to form. The new bands, who were primarily influenced by Big Star, blended traditional power pop with alternative rock sensibilities and sounds; in the process, groups like Teenage Fanclub, Material Issue, and the Posies became critical and cult favorites. While these bands gained the attention of hip circles, many of the original power-pop groups began recording new material and releasing it on independent labels.

-Got really high w/ Matthew Sweet after a Stone Pony gig; me and him alone in the ducts in the bowels of the place. Sounds cool. I was scared.
-Interviewed Material Issue; they did 2 hours with me, picking all the songs. Tons of Cheap Trick. Tons.
-Saw the many moods and incarnations and girls hurling themselves at Evan Dando while DJing the Stone Pony. The entire place wanted to fuck him.
-Met/interviewed Cheap Trick and got some pics with them, Rick Neilsen is batshit insane.

Mojo's right. Those three were all a reach. Honestly I made all my posts before I looked up a 'definition' for power pop. I just got carried away. I was looking for other things for all three, but wound up there. I was looking for the Nirvana Vaselines covers and then chickened out. And the Living End put out a power pop record right after the song I posted (in my opinion, of course). But I don't like it.

I can't find anything by 20/20 or the High-Back Chairs, but they were both great.
The Yellow Pills (named after a 20/20 song) comp series in the 90's is packed with classics that should have been huge. 4 volumes, all out of print, sadly, but well worth the hunt. A two-disc "prequel" of sorts of earlier overlooked power pop groups came out a couple years ago.

Poor Kweller. I don't think I've read anything about him that doesn't mention the hype about the Radishes and the implosion that followed.
I was thinking of some more sometimes alt.country bands who hae dipped their toes in the power pop pool, and I think Wilco definitely did with their album Summerteeth:

The Jayhawks have aways had a power pop vibe going on, though I can't find any of their poppier songs on YouTube.
The Super Fury Animals are a great Welsh band that are all over the map sonically, but have definitely pulled off the classic power pop sound from time to time:

Fans of great power pop can rejoice. A number of top purveyors of the genre are coming together to form a pop "super group" of sorts and Hitfix has exclusive details about recording plans.
Tinted Windows is Hanson vocalist Taylor Hanson, Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger, former Smashing Pumpkins' guitarist James Iha and Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos.
The album is expected out this Spring.

I should have posted that in here a couple months back. I think it was in the youtube music thread. The CD is amazing.
I'm seeing them Friday. Opening for Trail of Dead no less.

Rhino is putting out a Big Star box set as well as a deluxe reissue of Chris Bell's solo album on September 14th. (http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=519760)
They're streaming the unreleased song "Lovely Day" at that link.
Really looking forward to this.
