When I lived in NY i did a fair amount of hiking and overnights in Harriman park every so often. Now that I'm in NC I dont have the opportunity to do much hiking or camping, Wilmington is on the coast and I'm not much of a beach person.
That being said I am going on a 3 day hike in April to somewhere in Virginia. In NY I was able to borrow most of the stuff I would need to camp but that is not practical anymore and I need to get some equipment.
I'm looking for recommendations on backpacking stoves and water purification systems and any wisdom or advice would be cool as well.
Who knows maybe we can get some kind of RF.net camping trip to happen.
Thanks in advance

Me too, actually. For the NY/NJ area.
I've always wanted to go camping outdoors for a weekend and i know that my boyfriend has gone with his brother and friends down in Delaware(i think at the border maybe?) but that was a long time ago.

My friend and her brother go to a state park/campground in Hunterdon County. I went with them once, about 7 years ago and really enjoyed it, despite the rain and the cold.
For gear, I swear by Eastern Mountain Sports and REI.

Sky Line drive. I believe it's Shenadoah Valley, West Virginia. Some of the best "prekids" hiking I've ever done.

I used to love camping. Now it seems like if there isn't marble floors in the lobby and air conditioning, it's not a vacation. I think that a big part of my problem is that in this area, (tri-state nyc), you have to drive for hours just to get somewhere that feels "wooded". I know about Harriman (very close) and Stokes State Forest in west Jersey but I really don't feel like I'm far enough away from home to lug all of that crap with me somewhere. I still love the outdoors but I can't bring myself to sleep outside someplace that's closer than 20 minutes from a 7eleven.
Sorry about the whining. I'm just fat and feeling old these days.

My son, his buddy, and I are heading out for a backpacking/camping trip to the Rocky Mtn National Park in 16 days! I am super excited to get back into backpacking. Anyone else do any hiking/camping out of the Bear Creek area of RMNP?

You can't even stand to look at condiments, you are gonna go real camping and sleep outside? You know dirt gets on food when you are really camping sometimes?

Not to hijack, but the best trail I was ever on was the one leading up to Half Dome in Yosemite. We never made it to the top as we got stuck in some snow once we hit the stone steps, but leading up to that point was one of the most grueling 6 hours of my life (not to mention the 6 hours back down). It was an amazing hike with some stunning views once you get to the top and are in the mountains, I peaked at 8250 feet up, I felt like I was in a post card.

(taken almost at the end)
It was only a 16 mile round trip but it was 8 miles up hill the whole time. By the end, due to lack of food, water, and planning, as in we only took beef jerky along to eat and coming down ran out of water, we had to pump some out of a river through a filter, then my food cramped up on the way down and I had to limp for 4 miles, I was in a delirious state of euphoria and was talking to everyone I met, I was in one of the best moods of my life.
That was a great experience.
