NASA to Beam Beatles' 'Across the Universe' Into Space (http://www.nasa.gov/topics/universe/features/across_universe.html)
=
For the first time ever, NASA will beam a song -- The Beatles' "Across the Universe" -- directly into deep space at 7 p.m. EST on Feb. 4.
The transmission is being aimed at the North Star, Polaris, which is located 431 light years away from Earth. The song will travel across the universe at a speed of 186,000 miles per second. Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney expressed excitement that the tune, which was principally written by fellow Beatle John Lennon, was being beamed into the cosmos.
=
OK Here it is:
You get to choose one song, one single song to beam into space; which would you choose?
All of music, all of Rock and Roll, you have to beam out a single song that says 'This is Us. This is our Art. This is our Music. This one song represents Humanity. This is what we are.'
One single Song.
What song would you choose to represent Us?? To show the Universe What We Can Do.

Well, you can't use any Velvet Underground or Lou Reed songs lest hayseed aliens complain, you know, from the really unfashionable parts of the crab nebula.
This is an interesting question, I am still computing.

It depends. If you can promise that once we beam it into outer space, it will never be able to return, I would choose just about any of the songs that Dave played today.

My choice would be something from classical music. I'm not knowledgeable about it enough to pick a specific piece but I think classical music represents us a species pretty well

In radio once the bullet is out of the gun you cant retrieve it.
We've actually been doing this ever since we started transmitting radio/tv; just about everything ever transmitted over the air is leaving the earth at the speed of light, and if someone on the other end has a receiver good enough to pick it up...
So the TV shows transmitted 50 years ago have reached stars that are 50 light years or closer; and any planets around them, and anyone who might be listening.
The horrific movie Contact from the great Sagan book has a plot point directly related; aliens find earth has intelligent life by picking up our early radio/TV.
This one song would be a calling card.

The Voyager Probes have a gold recordattched to them: a whole bunch of songs sounds and greetings from earth in dozens of languages; but someone would have to find/recover the probe, figure out how to play the record [we did include instructions].
Wikipedia has some of the contents of the record; and songs they chose. Space nerds like me bought the record and book Sagan put out about it [he helped design it].

I agree on sending the classical piece. A song with words would just come across as gibberish... much like the Indian music you'd hear in a deli.
But a nice long Beethoven piece with feeling and emotion would probably be a better choice.

I would beam all 64 glorious minutes and 4 seconds of Metal Machine Music
Let the fuckers try to decypher that!
"Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye.
I don't think there's a more perfect piece of music ever made. Even though they wouldn't understand the lyrics, I can assure you the aliens who discover it would start banging immediately.

The Voyager Golden Record (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record)
Mike, while reading about this, I came across this :
"After NASA had received criticism over the nudity on the Pioneer plaque (line drawings of a naked man and woman), the agency chose not to allow Sagan and his colleagues to include a photograph of a nude man and woman on the record. Instead, only a silhouette of the couple was included"
which led to this :
"According to astronomer Frank Drake, there were many negative reactions to the plaque due to the fact that the human beings were displayed naked.[6] The Chicago Sun-Times retouched its image to hide the genitals of the man and woman. The Los Angeles Times received "angry letters" from readers that accused NASA of wasting taxpayer money to send "obscenities" into space."
I cannot believe humans sometimes. We deserve to destroy ourselves or be killed by invading aliens. We're barely breaking retarded here.

Yep! Sagan et al were accused of sending porn into space.
Here is the porn plaque:

They put a record on the Voyagers, but before them were the Pioneer probes, and they wanted something that would say something about where the thing came from; it shows a Hydrogen molecule at top left; the man and woman are standing behind an outline of the Pioneer so theyd know how big we were. Thats the sun at left w/ pointers to nearby objects [pulsars?] in space to show where it came from. The bottom shows the solar system, with the Pioneer leaving the third rock from the sun.
Laurie Anderson used the photo in concert; asking if aliens would assume the arm of Man was permanently in that position.

Yes, that's why we're best off sending Laurie's ode to William Burroughs, "Language is a Virus From Outer Space".
However, if we wanted to be truthful about what we've done with our time on the planet, and what the average person's tastes were, we'd send "The Thong Song" by Sisqo.
Actually, the song I'd most like to beam into space is Van Morrison's "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile)," and I'd dedicate it to Kathleen from the Bronx.

You beat me to it.
Second choice: The Stones' "2000 Light Years From Home" or Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine".

Also, it's the plot of a Futurama episode When Aliens Attack--where 20th century TV is just reaching the aliens of Omicron Persei VIII. The Omicronians come to Earth because the last episode of Single Female Lawyer gets cut off.

So did these guys.
Maybe Billy Joel- We Didn't Start the Fire.
I am thinking just on a 'maybe it can explain some of our recent history'.
Aside from that....I think the Beatles are a fine choice for music to send to the stars.
But I also did like the idea of putting a composer like Beethoven out there. Not lyrics just music. It might be appreciated alot more. Sounds can deliver a message that words fail to.

"Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" seems appropriate, but I can't see aliens know English.
