There was an interesting article on the cover of the NY Times Dining Out section on 1/30/2008 on the phenomenon that is the "Beefsteak" or "Beefsteak Dinner."

It involves a bunch of mostly men who get together in large groups to eat huge amounts of sliced meat, served usually with slices of bread. French fries and unlimited beer is usually served.

The events trace their origin back to NYC, but apparently are now limited to certain areas of New Jersey, particularly Bergen and Passaic counties.

I have never heard of this, but it sounds like fun. Has anyone ever been to one?

My P.B.A. is having ours at the Brownstone in Paterson on Feb 18th, all you can eat, and open bar. Beefsteaks are the best.

though it sounds delicious, this is obviously homosexual in nature.

My parents used to go to beefsteak dinners all the time for our town's baseball fundraisers when I was a kid. It was a fairly regular thing in Morris County.

So...went to a new steakhouse in NYC last night: Porter House New York

This is what we had and consider a beefsteak dinner (NY Style)...

Apps:
Seared Sea Scallops
12 West Coast Oysters
Short Rib Filled Ravioli
Roasted Marrow Bones

Entre:
28-day dry aged Prime USDA 36 oz. Porterhouse for 2
Sides:
Four Cheese and Mac
Creamed Spinach Mr. Pete's Way
Buttermilk Onion Rings

Wine:
La Grave a Pomerol Pomerol
Chateau Palmer Margeaux 1998

After Dinner Drink:
1970 Fonseca Port

It was really good. But I prefer the (original) Palm.

Do I hear the rumblings for a Ron and Fez beefsteak night?

I'd travel to a lodge hall in Jersey for that.

I can get us one (A hall.)

The famous beefsteak caterers are the nightengales (sp?).

been to a bunch of these. Some have strippers too! The most annoying thing is when one of the "insiders" tells you not to eat the bread..."heya, don't fill up on the bread. Leave it on your plate...they're bringing more meat." should I?---are they?

About 350 men, seated shoulder to shoulder at long tables, were devouring slices of beef tenderloin and washing them down with pitchers of beer. As waiters brought trays of meat, the guests reached over and harvested the pink slices with their bare hands, popping them down the hatch.

I'm not eating food manhandled by germ-ridden hands. That's about as sanitary as bar snack dishes.
