After today's discussion I'm surprised that this hasn't been put to a poll yet.

The Ron & Fez show once taught me that Oreos were brown. Then years later I have to listen to Ronnie arguing that they're black. My life has been turned upside down and im now forever confused.

I remember Ron and Fez discussing this topic WAAAAAAYYYY back when on WNEW.
Now that I said that, I'm sure Mikey will provide us all with a link so we can hear what I'm talking about.

NabiscoWorld.com is no help whatsoever:
What color are Oreo's, black or brown?
We do not have a color assigned to the cookie portion of an OREO. Some people think the OREO is a shade of brown, while others view the color closer to black.

Why are oreo's the only cookie that no one's mom can whip up in the oven?
also, oreo's are black. i can't grab two spanish friends and say, 'hey, look at us, we make an oreo!'
but if i had earl and his brother carl...

I'm in complete agreement with Ron - Oreos and The Chicago Bears uniforms are black to me.
So are the Yankees hats.
Bullshit that's blue.

informal survey held after dinner tonight at the docs house
3 black
1 brown
the doc had 5 double stuffed
The survey can not be duplicated tomorrow due to insufficient oreos remaining. I will attempt to rectify that with a trip to the IGA at lunch time.

We can't deny that licorice is black. Black is black, there are no shades of it.
Here are some black jellybeans:

all them little crevices on the cookie cast shadows(like little dark passageways or mazes) so maybe that has an affect the color when viewed?

Are you saying that (after a glance) you might shun Hydrox... but may end up eating Hydrox when your glance fails you?

They're BROWN, and if I'd known we'd still be having this discussion today, I'd have done this myself.
Someone help! Take some Oreos, throw em in a blender, maybe add some milk or vanilla ice cream, and post what color your "Oreo shake" is.
If it's a shade of BROWN, then the cookies are BROWN.
If it's a shade of GREY, then the cookies are BLACK, and I'll admit defeat, and probably never eat the damn things again.

careful now, this is an imus world.
and not to throw a wrench into it, but dont they also have white oreos ?
not the white fudge ones....
either way, this is racist.
oh, and oreos are brown. not black. there is no "black chocolate"
On the way home from work yesterday I stopped at my local grocery store and bought a package of Oreos. (for research purposes of course). I will say that they are darker than I remember, but they are brown.

I think that this the main point to be made. There is only one shade of black. There isn't light black, dark black, or blue/black. There is black and something that isn't black. White and black colors are absolutes aren't they ?
Dave made the comparison of Oreo cookies to "Connect 4 pieces" (black checkers). I challenge anyone to put an Oreo next to a black checker and tell me they are the same color. And the excuse that the Oreos are a lighter shade of black just doesn't work because a lighter shade of black would be gray at the best.

Yes Buddays it's true they are brown, I found a recipe that states if you want your cookies to look like the real Oreo cookies you must and I quote*This is an optional step to help recreate the color of the original cookie. If you do not use the paste food coloring be sure to change the amount of water added to the wafer cookies from 3 tablespoons to 1/4 cup. The food coloring gives the cookies the dark brown, almost black color. The coloring can be found with cake decorating supplies at art supply and craft stores.
And can make your own Oreo Cookie Clone Recipe (http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/32/Oreo_Cookie_Cone21537.shtml).

Now they appear to be a dark brown.
I think they turned color when they started putting cyclamates in there or something.....

You may be right. What I meant was that there aren't shades of white or black. things are either white or they aren't, they are either blak or they aren't. No dark white or light black.

I believe they are very dark brown and like Funky says, the crevises are dark areas that darken it further. Also, ever seen the dark layer of a Carvel ice cream cake? The dark cookie like crumbly stuff? I believe that it is very similar to whatever they use to make the dark part of the oreo cookie.

Oreo's are the same shade of black as on a black and white cookie. So clearly with cookie science we have the answer.

i agree on the color, but the carvel cookie layer is one of the tastiest things ever and oreos are vile. other than thinking those two are somehow related, you're spot on.
