So the first real band I got into was U2 I was about 13/14 and a friend's older sister gave me "Under a blood red sky" on vinyl even! the only vinyl album I ever had. This was the first time I ever got into music I went out and got all U2 albums to that point. I would listen almost obsessively. I would buy music magazines with U2 articles and pictures cut out the pictures and post on my wall. My fandom progressed as I got older tried to see them in concert whenever they were in the NY area was always aware when new albums or singles were coming out. I read the biography saw "Rattle and Hum" opening weekend. All in all I would consider myself a major U2 fan until a point but I dont know when I stopped being the obcessive fan and just stopped caring. I even had the "Passengers" album.

Today Im in Best Buy and I walk past a rack that had remasterd Joshua Tree albums with bonus tracks and 3 separate DVD concerts of performances from recent tours. I stopped looked them over made a mental note and said theat cool and kept on walking.

I still like music but I never get into a band now the way I would when I was younger even though now its easier then ever to find out everything you could ever want about a band and connect with fellow fans. I have more money now then I did as a youth (not much more but still...) and very little desire to hunt down those impoted singles or even go to concerts.

Is this just part of growing older? any similar experiances?

I think older people just don't have time to stare at liners in an album for hours and hours. We have stupid worldly crap to do.

However, I still feel that way about Pulp.
I bought up a bunch of tour brochures from their fansite, and my wife bought me tickets (plane tickets) to see them play in Dublin on their last tour. (that was a damn good gift)

I don't have posters up on the wall, but I have a google alert for the band members and keep track as much as possible.

I think it's just part of growing up, maturing in the way we appreciate things.

I always find it suspect when people claim they're only listening to the same stuff they were into when they were "younger."

A lot of certain types of popular music are predisposed to being "grown out of"...a lot of the poppier punk acts especially, and I think most of the nu-emo bands. Hair metal, nu-metal, "party/club rap," that kind of stuff.

the same swirling hormones that make your first love seem like your last shockingly has the same effect on most things that happen during that age.
