meh
is there anything worse than the "hidden track" gimmick?

having a 30 minute track with 5 minutes of music, 23 minutes of dead air, than a hack 2 minute cover track of "somewhere over the rainbow" (nothing specific, just picking a song)

Agreed. Long sleeve shirts should be outlawed.

I had a musician friend tell me that you could sell a CD with a cover song and not pay the royalties as long as there was no documented evidence of it being there (ie track listing, liner notes), hence it's supposed to be "hidden".

The x files move soundtrack had a -1 track, you had to play the first song and rewind to something like negative 5 minutes to hear a song. I have never heard of something like that besides on that cd.

I always enjoyed Green Day from the Dookie Album - All By Myself. Of course, at the time I was 12 and thought it was really funny.

With the decline of CD sales, the hidden track, in that sense is probably at the end of it's line. It can hold up with the digital players - showing track time, etc - it just won't work.

I remember in 9th grade being in a record store searching through all the Clash albums trying to find the one with "Train in Vain" on it but couldn't find it. I didn't know at the time it was a hidden track on London Calling (this was back in 1979 before a computer google search could have told me instantly).

A little more recently I loved the hidden track on the Lost in Translation soundtrack of Bill Murray doing karaoke of the song "More Than This" by Roxy Music. I thought it was lovely and mournful.

The 2nd "hidden" track on Jay-Z The Blueprint...the remix of girls,girls,girls... is better than the one released.

Tool does this on a couple albums if recall. Time to listen "Opiate" again.
