Hi all,

I've accepted a job at Providence College and will be moving there this summer. I don't know a soul and wondered if anyone Ron and Fez fans were from there or perhaps were familiar with the town?

Cheers,
Chris

Providence used to be a disaster, but is now a near first class city. There's a lot of fine dining and lots of stuff to do downtown. Its a great little city.

I can't believe TheProfessor is moving. He's always been so cool to hang out with I can't imagine him not being nearby. Well I guess things can't stay the same forever. I'll manage somehow...somehow.

I hear Providence is the East Coast's answer to San Francisco - very 'alternative lifestyle' friendly.

Don't make you a bad person.

So the Grateful Dead blew up there, too?

Stroke that solo, Gvac.

You are thinking of Provincetown (http://www.provincetowngov.org/) (aka P-Town) That is at the Tip of Cape Cod in Mass.
It is a charming, artsy town with many great shop, antiques, and history.

Aside from my on campus interview, all I know of Providence comes from The Brotherhood. Not exactly the image I think the chamber of commerce would offer up!

You should address this question to Uncle Inky over at FBA. He's from Providence.

I work just outside of Providence an live 1/2 hour away.

It's a much better city than it was 10+ years ago. A lot of improvements. I would highly recommend going to WaterFire during the upcoming summer. It's a good time.

Inky,

I will definitely do that. I'm going to try and find a place within walking distance to campus. After living in the midwest for the past 12 years, I've had enough of driving everywhere.

Cheers,
Chris

I went to college in Providence and it is a great city. Nice Italian section. Great resturants and good nighlife.

No, Providence is "alternative lifestyle" friendly too. They have an openly gay mayor.

I was born and raised in Warwick and spent many a days in Providence. As mentioned earlier, it's really changed and become a cleaner city thanks to ex-con and former mayor Buddy Cianci.

Couple of things to look for:

Pizza - go to Casertas on Federal Hill.

In the summer enjoy a Del's Frozen Lemonade or two and go see a Pawtucket Red Sox game

Get ready to call water fountains "bubblers"

Enjoy the arts at RISD and wonder around Brown University

The Roger Williams Zoo is nice

In the summer, brave the crowds and head over to Newport

My wife's aunt is on the board or trustees at PC and one of her cousins graduated from the school a few years ago.

I took a summer school class there many moons ago.

Congrats on the new position.

I'll tell you this. Rhode Island is one of my favorite sleeper states. Newport is very cool, the whole coast from the Connecticut border to Newport is very nice. Block Island is beautiful. You should like Rhode Island a lot.

(second sleeper state: Wisconsin. Wisconsin is awesome)

I've been there to visit a strip club and Dave and Busters. I think that's all that's in RI.

The area on the River Ave side of PC is nice, Elmhurst. That's where I am. Packs of college girls jogging by the house all day long ;)

Its quite a difference coming down from Boston. Stupid 2 foot rule here. Down there, full contact. Huzzah! (and literally, down there)

go see a Pawtucket Red Sox game

Good call on that. That is a GREAT inexpensive way to spend a summer afternoon.

That's why you don't leave it to New Yorkers to promote board unity. New Englanders are better equipped what with their winning sports franchises and their dominance over the NY/NJ teams.

Now let's have that party! Meet you at Jillians behind Fenway Park or at the beer stand at McCoy Stadium!

I don't want to get fired before I've even started. I'm not going to even notice them...until I'm tenured.
