The Joe poo discussion scared me. what's an appropriate tip to give? we know at restaurants it's 20% of the bill (i usually do more) but what do you do for A) bartenders and b) delivery guys. because i order rice from this place and it's not that far away and i tip the guy like $1.10 and I don't know if that's good.

As far as restaurants go, minimum of 20%, even for bad service. The waiterwaitress may be new and not very good yet, and they know they're not that experienced, so a good tip will make them feel better. If they're rude, tip the same anyway. They'll feel stupid later for being rude after getting a good tip, and instead of just short tipping them, point it out to the manager instead. They'll probably get fired and may need that extra tip more than they realize.
Delivery person, same thing, 20%.
As far as a bar goes, I always tip 2 bucks on the first drink and at least a dollar per drink after that, and it will get me a buyback every time. And tip 3-5 dollars on the buyback. If it's a place you plan on going back to, the bartender will remember you and you'll have no problem getting a drink in a crowd. Remember, the bartender is your friend, judge and jury. Make himher happy and they will return in kind.

i'm a waitress..and i always appreciate 20%..there's some people that will leave exactly 17% which is like the "offical amount" or whatever. that sucks. (i'm typically a very good waitress and make the most money at my restaurant each night so i'm just tooting my own horn) anyway i always end up overtipping at a restaurant, especially if we have a really good waitress. by my standards of course
delivery like two bucks it's usually like 7 buck order...the ones around here are usually very friendly and don't get tipped at all by us poor college students so they remember you tipping them and will always bring my food faster the next time :)
bar..um since i'm not old enough i don't..hehe..but when i go to get my water i always leave a couple bucks just cause i know how much they bust their ass. when i happen to be in a bar being served, i tend to hook them up cause then you get your shit before everyone else.

I usually go for over 20% at a restaurant, 25 or 30 if I'm with a huge crowd. I usually leave a buck a drink at a bar, but never less than 5 bucks, so if I only have 3 drinks, I'm leaving at least 5 bucks. I always tip the delivery guys pretty well, especially if I order from a place i always order from, this way I stay in their good graces. I'm not too fond of the thought of nutsweat pizza or cream of some young guy on my beef and brocolli.
Also, quick story, the one time i left a small tip, I was at a diner with some friends and my girl and the waiter literally stopped taking order to answer his cellphone. He interupts me as hes taking my order and says "hold on, i'll be back in a little while". We waited patiently and tipped him like a buck out of spite. He got fired because he did the same thing to the owner when he came in with his family one night and he didnt recognize the owner. Good.

I go for 15-20% in resturants. But when it comes to delivery, i'm very generous. I've heard these kind of stories from delivery boys before. i don't need that kind of trouble.

20%, if the service is good (or even satisfactory). More if I'm a regular. (There's a restaurant in NJ I go to every Thursday night and tend to tip 25-30%)
If the service sucks, fuck them. I'll tip, but they prolly won't like it.
