Movies that "challenge" you
I was reading the description of Michael Clayton and tigerland while i was adding them to my que last night
and they were described on imdb as being movies that challenge the viewer
im not 100 percent on what that means
what would be an example-movies worth checking out that would challenge the viewer?

im not talking about best movies ever-although they can also be
im talking great plot that twists and makes you question the movies morality and message at the end

think Gatsby- only less shitty/boring

I believe it took me two separate viewings to make it all the way through Cronenberg's Naked Lunch. 2001: A Space Odyssey took three. The former was mostly because of the impenetrable weirdness, the latter because it was so slow.

David Lynch flicks can be challenging, inland empire specifically.

1998 movie called 'pie' but y'know...the math symbol thing, not the actual word 'pie'. directed by Darren Aronofsky.

Inland Empire is my absolute favorite film of Lynch's. It certainly is a "challenge" but in a sense -if you've followed and understood all his films up to that point, Inland Empire is really just the culmination of all his prior themes but this time done to perfection.

I know I've mentioned this movie time and time again but "waking life". Whenever I've been spending too much time in my own head I like to watch it and remind myself not get caught up in daily life. If anyone is interested in watching it the whole movie is on youtube in 10 10 minute increments.

Though it won't fit here, The Godfather always makes me wonder about morales. How we root for Michael Corleone, yet he is jsut as bad as all the other heads of the mob.

Just a thought.

Any movie that deals with time travel will always get to me and make me start pondering.
I go nuts thinking about the circular logic. TWELVE MONKEYS, TERMINATOR 1 2 3, PRIMER, etc. I have to kinda digest 'em for a long time after the movie is over. I love seeing them over and over and looking for flaws or supposed flaws.

Not TIMECOP though. Screw that.

kids. saw it when i was just a kid (around 16) and seriously blew my mind. changed my whole perspective on what a film could portray and how gritty a movie could be. now when i watch the movie it turns into a helpless spank fest. young rosario dawson and chloe sevigny. i'd buy those succubi corndogs anyday

Anything by Uwe Boll. . .

It challenges me to try and make it through the movie without cursing, turning the movie off, and causing destruction.

2 movies that challenege me to this day are Momento, which I thought was great , and Jacobs Ladder, which to this day Im still looking for an explanation that would tie up that piece of chit!:furious:

Memento was the first movie that came to mind, although it's possible to make sense of it without rewatching it. Mulholland Drive is a good one though. The first time i saw that one, it really threw me for a loop. Pulp Fiction is also a good one. I got to watch it with someone who had never seen it recently, and I was jealous the whole time. "Oh yeah, you don't even know WHEN this is taking place, do you?"

TWELVE MONKEYS

Beat me to it.

Most of the (good) movies that "challenge" you are movies that make sense, or better sense, the second time you see them. As opposed to bad movies, which are just poorly written.

I really enjoyed it. I think aronofsky is an amazing director. Hugh jackman gives a great performance. Its challenging because the plot jumps around a lot. Some of the scenes are visually stunning as well

Frailty is a movie that not just challenges you but gives you a real good twist at the end that doesnt comprimise the movie as a whole... Bill Paxton and Matthew Mcconaughey, yes Matthew Mcconaughey give the best performances of their careers.

I saw this tonight. I actually had to leave the theater for a few minutes because the first part of the movie is so fucking intense.

I'm sleepy and I have to go to sleep but I watched 1 through 4 of this 'series' on youtube. Thanks Pixie. I kind of like that it is in a series since it is a meal of sorts. It's disjointed and purposefully so. You put it together yourself.

We do seek mayhem and try to make order of it when mayhem what's pretty much brought us together in the first place. Fucking silly isn't it?
