View Full Version : End of the worst director ever?

This made the net on RottenTomatoes.com. I'm not sure if anyone knows who this idiot is, but Uwe Boll has released some of the worst movies. Its freshest film on RT is 11% and his most rotten is 1%. He deals mostly with video game adaption films, but that doesn't matter. He has pissed so many people off in the film community, and gaming community alike. Now it seems that he is through.
Has Uwe Boll Directed His Final Big-Budget Flop?
Director's films likely to lose money on a much smaller scale from now on.
by Jeff Giles | January 15, 2008
Dozens of you have repeatedly wondered what it would take to keep Uwe Boll from making more big-budget films. As of today, you may finally have your answer.
In a piece titled "Boll Ejected from Big-Budget Ring," The Hollywood Reporter details the probable effects that the failure of Boll's latest film, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, will have on his career. Reached for comment by the Reporter, Boll -- the proud owner of a five percent lifetime Tomatometer rating -- displayed remarkable prescience:
"In the future, I will focus on small films such as (the video game adaptation) 'Postal' or (the Vietnam war drama) 'Tunnel Rats.' These are films that represent my true passion, and they can be done with small budgets."
Despite his commercial difficulties -- the Reporter notes that In the Name of the King only managed to bring in $3 million last weekend, lengthening a chain of flops that includes BloodRayne and Alone in the Dark -- Boll has been able to continue securing funding for his films through German tax shelter funds. Those funds have been outlawed, however, which places Boll in the unenviable position of trying to finance his new films based on the performance of his old ones.
So it looks like you won't have Uwe Boll to kick around anymore -- not in as many theaters, anyway -- but whatever happens to his career from here, he still stands a 99.9% chance of going down in history as the only director to ever assemble Jason Statham, Burt Reynolds, Leelee Sobieski, and Ray Liotta in a single film. (We aren't sure what that means, exactly, but it sure was fun to type.)
This is the Hollywood Reporter Article.
Boll ejected from big-budget ring

Uwe Boll, the German director the critics love to hate, will return to low-budget filmmaking now that his latest and biggest production, the $70 million fantasy epic "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," bombed at the boxoffice.
The adaptation of the hit video game, which stars Jason Statham, Ron Perlman and Burt Reynolds, delivered just $3 million over the weekend, marking the third flop in a row for Boll, whose "BloodRayne" and "Alone in the Dark" also failed to deliver theatrically.
Reached at his home in Mainz, Boll said the results from "King" mean he will be unable to continue with big-budget productions.
"In the future, I will focus on small films such as (the video game adaptation) 'Postal' or (the Vietnam war drama) 'Tunnel Rats,' " he said. "These are films that represent my true passion, and they can be done with small budgets."
Despite a number of critical and commercial drubbings, Boll has been able to finance bigger budget films through German tax shelter funds. But "King" marked the last film to be bankrolled by his fund, which, like all similar tax shelters, has been banned in Germany.
Boll will now have to finance films the old-fashioned way -- with presales. Given the director's record, that could prove difficult. Despite being one of Germany's most prolific filmmakers, he is arguably most famous -- or infamous -- for the boxing match he staged with Internet critics of his movies.
"Because of the Boll reputation, it is not easy to get audiences into the cinemas," said Mychael Berg, head of distribution at 20th Century Fox in Germany, which released "King" locally. "We finally managed it, and we are quite satisfied with the abut 250,000 people who watched the movie (in Germany). We proved that you can make money with a Boll film."
But Boll himself acknowledges that will not be enough to produce another $70 million film. Instead, the German director has lined up a decidedly pulpy title for his next adaptation -- the video game shoot 'em up "Zombie Massacre."
Dieter Brockmeyer reported from Frankfurt, Germany; Scott Roxborough reported from Berlin.

HAAaa!
When I saw the title of this thread, I immediately said to myself "this is gonna have SOMETHING to do with Uwe Boll."
Lo and behold. The end of an era. Or should I say "error".

Just an Era, to correct the Error he's have to pay everyone who has seen his films

Ironically, a movie about what a failure Uwe Boll is might actually make more at the Box than an actual Uwe Boll movie. Unless he directed it, of course.
Wait... what?

I've never seen a Uwe Boll movie, but I know of his garbage skills. Now if I can get Jason Friedberg to quit making movies. He has taking the 'rapping granny' bit to new levels. Spartans breakdancing! hilarious!

The only time I heard of Uwe Boll, was when he boxed Lowtax from SomethingAwful.
He seems like a huge prick.

but he was scared and selected critics he knew couldn't fight. He is the worst thing to come out of Germany since. . . lets just say . . . 1965.

To all of you writing now about me and the fact that POSTAL is not getting screens.
its okay ..its fun kicking a guy nonstop who is on the ground
you are all not getting it that i'm the guy who made it against the big hollywood system and you are all only busy to destroy me and finish me up
and then you YOU WON WHAT ? the attention of the studios, michael bay .. ?????
if you damage me you feel closer to Hollywood ? what is your game plan?
you want only movies like JUMPER , SPEED RACER , WHAT HAPPENDS IN VEGAS ...? then keep going and your dreams will be fullfilled. POSTAL makes some very important points ..but you dont wanna see that .... : that Bush used the SEPTEMBER 11 to start a war against a country what had nothing to do with Bin Laden etc.... but this all doesnt matter because you are all busy to THINK that INDIANA JONES or NARNIA are important movies ... but in real they are empty shells of an industry what wants to make money and what wants to keep you looking "escape movies" with nothing in it. in between they are putting some CONTROVERSIAL movies to show that they can do also IMPORTANT movies ...but also this movies are not really critical....they only supporting the system and not showing the big picture. and POSTAL shows the BIG PICTURE ...it nails the absurd situation with all the stupid religions, races and nations we are living in. POSTAL is not accepting bullshit politics. POSTAL has not the opinion that Bush made mistakes - POSTAL has the opinion that it is a scandal that BUSH is not in jail. What happened in America in the last 7 years is the biggest joke since Columbus stepped on that land.
but instead of seeing the courage i had in doing that movie against everybody who tried to stop me - you are sitting on your desks and you are working on stories about me ....and my image as the worst director on earth...and you fullfill what your editor wants from you in regards of uwe boll ...or you fullfill what you think makes you a cooler guy in the internet ...and you are not getting it that you are only interested in movies like IRON MAN or HULK or KUNG FU PANDA or the MUMMY 3 because the studios spending 60 mio. $ in advertising to make you interested in NON INTERESTING movies.
how many times you wanna keep going in movies only because the TRAILER was so cool and the CGI was so great ?
thanks for reading this

I can understand the guy is frustrated because the world doesn't share his vision and appreciate his work. Having everybody pile on isn't fun either.
If this memo is a stunt to get some word of mouth for his movie, fine. Otherwise all it does is reinforce everyone's opinion of him. It's also not going to endear him to the studio people nor make it easier to get financing for his next project.
Fezident is right in an earlier post. A movie about this guy would probably be interesting (it would help if he died in some spectacular way).

He might have a point if he latest movie wasn't an adaptation of a game where you put a gun up a cat's ass and use it as a silencer.

I'm a little confused on the hatred for this guy. Is it about the movies or is it more about his arrogance and abrasive personality. I know his movies are pretty much devoid of good writing and they're often way too crude. I also realize the hard core gamers hate what he does with the plots. However, they're usually pretty slickly made and the action is good. I think they are filmed well for the most part. I really didn't think House of the Dead was that horrible. There are dozens of much worse big budget Hollywood movies released every year. There has to be more to it than the movies themselves. I even thought he came across pretty funny and engaging on O & A the other day. Can someone set me straight? I'm lost and confused.

Not to mention Dave Foley... He does get decent 'A-/B+' actors to appear in his films as well. You gotta give him credit for that.

I've hated all of his movies that I have seen (I think I've only watched House of the Dead and half of BloodRayne), but I gotta admit, I like the guy. I enjoy his stance on terrible films, and when he was on O and A last week, I kinda agreed with everything he said. I just wish he was a guy who could speak ill of bad movies, but make a good one himself.

I saw Uwe at the FANGORIA convention last year. I thought what he had to say was right on. He seemed like a cool guy. Of couse that doesn't mean he makes good movies, although I haven't seen any of them. However, I did see scenes from postal that they screened at the convention, and it looked fucking hilarious! This one scene with these hijackers was very funny. Not crude funny either, though I'm sure that is in the movie too, but very tongue-in-cheek. I couldn't wait to see it, and was worried that it wouldn't be released in theaters.
I think that sticking to small budget stuff may actually help him.
