View Full Version : What are you knowledgable on?

I know a lot of us come from different walks of life, but it seems that we all have a large collective knowledge of a lot of different subjects. For example, Mikeyboy's a lawyer, GVac knows cars and guitars, and Fallon knows how to avoid Chris Hansen.
So I ask, what do you know?
My main knowledge comes from event marketing and planning, along with the radio business, from both an operations and production viewpoint. I also understand different forms of marketing from direct mail, person to person, and business to business. I also have a pretty good handle on retirement planning, although I am NOT a certified financial planner and I do not possess any licenses. (Disclaimer)
I'm not at liberty to discuss what I know.

Today I know more than I ever wanted to know about the Internal Revenue Code (26 USC) as a layperson. And it stinks.
I know a little bit about an awful lot of things. It was enough to pass the Jeopardy! qualifying test 4 years ago. (They are offering the test online at the end of this month; I haven't signed up yet.)
Lately, I've been learning as much as I can about breast cancer, ovarian cancer & cervical cancer and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's disease) so I can be more intelligent about speaking to people about these diseases when I'm fundraising for the charity walks I do.
If something strikes my interest, I usually find out as much as I can about it. Which is part of the reason why I'm simultaneously deathly afraid of and fascinated by sharks. I read this TimeLife book about sharks when I was 5 or 6, had the thing practically memorized, and the commercials for channel 11's runs of the Jaws movies used to scare me silly. (So silly that I almost refused to swim in a pool or take a bath because I was afraid of the sharks. Obviously, there were no sharks in the pool or the bathtub, but I was a little kid so it made sense that the sharks could still come and get me.)

I should think that comes in handy regardless. That's fighting with the same weapons, so it levels the playing field. (And, chances are, you're probably more knowledgeable than a lot of the folks you're confronting are about their own religion.)
I think that just because you don't believe it doesn't mean you should be completely ignorant of it.
Besides, an educated person should know certain things . . . the Bible is one of them, whether you believe it as fact or just see it as an amazing work of literature.

The one odd thing I'm knowledgeable on is old bottles, dug up from bottle dumps, common out back of old houses from the turn on the century. I can tell if they were hand blown or factory made. Also glass insulators, the round, glass objects you see sometimes on top of old telegraph poles next to railroad tracks.
There was a few years when I was a kid I went around looking for old stone foundations and walls of houses in the woods and went digging for bottle dumps. In the 1800's people would just throw their bottles in a hole in the back yard and bury them.
When you found one, it was like hitting treasure. You also had to be real careful not to break any. When you found a whole mason jar, milk bottle, or even a Hires Root Beer extract (which I found a bunch of), it was a great find.
There is a whole subculture of the bottle market. There are books and shows. I would go and sell the bottles and insulators. Made a lot money off it too. Now I still have some around the house and my mom uses them as vases.
Every once in a while I think I'd like to go hunting for bottles again.

If your sales this year is 4 and last year was 2
Your sales have improved by 100% or
(4-2)/2 = 1
multiply by 100 for percentage

I am knowlegable in a few things, the most knowledge I carry is in the sport of Hockey.
Moreso the intricacies of the defense position. I am the only person alive who truly understands the single method that will break the neutral zone trap 90% of the time. Ever since the introduction of obstruction calls that percentage has shot up to 98%.
(I have a 2% buffer that allows for Russian slackers and missed calls by the refs).
My second greatest knowledge is about occupational Health and safety. I am a safety professional, I work for the largest crane company in the world. This has made me more knowledgable than I should be for someone with as little time in the profession as I.
My truest second greatest knowledge (but it's useless and can't really be told over dinner) is the female anatomy. I used to spend hours reading charts, reading on the internet of the various part names and the purposes. I technically know the erogenous zones of the female, when it comes to applying these in a real life scenario... I can't find them.
My greatest drive is towards occupational health and safety, that is the one I strive to gain the most knowledge. I'll never know it all (no one will), but hopefully one day I can be considered a great resource for youngsters entering the profession.

We called it "Knowledge Bowl" at my high school. We didn't have a captain, but if we did, I would have been it.
As for what I'm knowledgeable on, I have extensive knowledge of several areas of law (healthcare, federal and NY state civil procedure, RICO and ERISA, constitutional law, contract, tort). Decent-sized knowledge of world and US history (more in the area of politics and military history). A decent sized knowledge of movie, television and comic book history.

I know everything there is to know about keys. I can make car keys, house keys, boat keys. I don't have to list all the keys I can make.
Just know. I make keys.
I don't even have to look very long to find the blank for the key you need to make. That's what we call it in the key business. Blanks. That's the key I'm going to make for you.
I'll clamp that bad boy into one end of my machine, clamp your key in the other, and carve that sucker down. Then I'm going to take your new key and give it a good brushing.
On both sides.
I know what you're thinking. You're going to take that key back and try it out right away. Make sure it works. That's cool. It's gonna work, because I made that key.
And that's what I do. I make keys.
