I'm getting married in June and need an official to perform the ceremony. Being a typical New Yorker I try to avoid being in situations where I will be ripped off as much as possible. Just about every aspect of the wedding so far is being done by someone I know or through someone I know.

Photographer - friend
DJ - through a friend
Florist - former co-worker of the bride
Videographer - through the Photographer

Being the man that I am I don't know any ministers or wedding officials and none of my friends would know any either. Any help here?

What's your budget?

I can recommend the guy and/or the service we used...

I'd be careful about using a photographer who is a friend, if they don't do it professionally. Just saying...

Some things about photography, especially when a friend does it:

If a friend is not a professional photographer or at the very least a hobbyist, it's really bad news if they try to shoot a wedding.

NOW..

You said you got a videographer through the friend who is doing photography, so I'd assume that it may be a professional, but you never know.

A friend of my father's is a pro photographer so he shot our wedding, and he brought his whole crew with him. So it worked out for the best. Basically, my father's friend shot the ceremony and the posed pics after the wedding, and then handed it off to his crew (but still took some shots) during the reception.

If your friend isn't a pro, but at the very least has a nice D-SLR with a good flash, it may be acceptable.

yeah no friends, the videographer's daughter was a friend of my wife, it was okay at best

I had to pay double because of 2 faiths, did a church ceremony at the church up the block from my wife. and at the hall, a Jewish Ceremony performed by a Rabbi who would do an interfaith ceremony

Give out 50 disposable cameras to everyone at the wedding, tell them to shoot and hope for the best.

You'll get a couple of great shots, a lot of OK shots and several upskirts and urinal pictures.

Thanks for the info...

My friend is a professional photographer. I'm lucky to know people in these fields either from trying to hang out with the "artsy" people growing up or from studying and working in hospitality locally.

i highly suggest the reverend dawn cumia (yes, anthony's sister).

I can only imagine how much she costs...Oh!!!

I may do that as well, so I can have a traditional photo album and a bizarro photo album.

we put disposable cameras on each table. we had a lot of great shots from the people sitting at the tables of us, of themselves, etc.
we had some ok shots as well.
and then, we had those shots. shots of a piece of bread, of somebody's shoes, shots where people had their finger over the flash, shots of the centerpiece, etc.
luckily, no stall shots.

but the traditional and and comic relief photo albums are the way to go.

btw- the shoe and piece of bread shots are in the comic relief album.

I'm hit or miss on disposables. I thought (personally) it would be a waste of money. Looking on Amazon now, a 10-pack of those cameras are about 35-50 bucks, plus developing - which is what kills you. So if you want to drop 200 bucks on something you'll probably get about 20 decent pictures out of, go for it. Disposable cameras were like the last on the list for our wedding, and in the long run, I'm OK with not spending money on it.

We also had three photographers running around our wedding, so maybe your mileage will vary. Although I cherish my friends and family dearly, some of the pictures we got back were...

uh...

hm.

interesting. And not funny urinal shots, just "bad" pictures that not even photoshop could save.

Also: DON'T OVERSPEND ON LIMOS. We did, it's the one thing I kick myself over for wedding expenses.
