I had forgotten how awesome sledding was. I just took my 4 year old son to the local golf course that is open to the public for sledding. The sled we bought him for Christmas was just asking to be broken out after this last big storm. Since school was going on, we had the entire slope to ourselves. We were flying down huge hills at ridiculous speeds and laughing ourselves stupid. So much fun and it reminded me of the times I went sledding with my Dad as a kid.

This easily makes the top 10 list of why being a stay at home Dad kicks ass.

My dad used to take the seven of us sledding. Me and 6 beers. It was a blast, though. It's actually some of my fondest memories. At the bottom of the hill was a creek and my father would always pretend we were going to go into it.

I grew up with a hill across the street and a couple of gold courses to go to when it snowed. Loved sledding. Flexi-flyer, inner tubes, plastic toboggans, those flat rolled-up pieces of plastic which sucked... I had them all.

Had a couple of bad accidents too. One time, I must have been about 8 or 9, I went flying down a golf course hill and people were jumping out of the way and I went off a cliff into the crick below and BAM... went head first into the water and hit my head on a rock. I was unconscious for a bit as well. I remember waking up to some burly, bearded man who lifted me out of the water and then my Dad ran up to take me to the hospital. Gave the 'ol noggin a few stitches with that crash.

I'd do it again in a second!

Sledding with your kids is great. I had a blast recently just recently.

That is till my son decided he didn't need me on the sled with him anymore. (he's 4 1/2). Then I just stood there laughing at his facial expression everytime he would come down the hill. It was almost as fun as the actual sledding.

Note to self... remember the second sled next time.

You look taller then Randy though too. He looked shorter then I do. At least when I met him.

I still say KHB is the better of the brothers.

I lived at the bottom of a hill, it was awesome sledding down the hill basically right into my driveway.

So true, I got lucky that someone left a POS sled at the top of the hill for anyone to use. That one was mine for today and I lost every race.

We used to take a candle stick and run it up and down the blades of the sled. Less friction. More speed. Anything to get 1 more MPH!

I took the direct route and sprayed the bottom of the sled with WD-40.

I go with the spray silicone.

I miss sledding. It used to be one of the best things about winter. I really wanted to go last year, but was never able to.

If we get snow this year, I may have to pick up a sled and give it a shot.

TJ - thanks for posting. It's great to hear about other Dads having fun with their kids.

God I remember going sledding as a kid....except we called it going coasting. I lived right behind a dairy farm and there was a big hill right there. The down side was it was where the farmer planted his vegetable garden. Word to the wise, hitting a frozen rock solid turnip or cabbage when you get thrown off the sled leaves a huge bruise on your ass.
The next door neighbor ended up with a broken collarbone once too, on one of those flying saucers that you could never control....BAM right into the only tree that was close by.

Ahhh good times, good times.

My grandpa used to make a chain of 7 sleds (for us 7 grandkids). The sleds varied from regular toboggans to saucer types. He always put the saucer at the end. He attached the chain to the back of his truck and would pull us on the lake. Great fun, but we always fought about who would get to ride the saucer. When he would make turns the saucer would try to pass the truck causing the 6 sleds in front to roll over. The kid in front was the recipient of 5 to 6 sleds running over the top of him/her. Memories...

Sounds like our two parties should've went sledding together.

I grew up with a huge golf course a couple hundred yards from my house. The snow rarely was just right for the Flexible Flyer, but it was always great for tubing. We'd go to one of the local tire shops and could pick up giant truck tubes for free or 2 bucks at the most. We'd build snow ramps all the way down the hills and have a big one at the bottom. The goal was to go flying and land nowhere near the tube. Lots of injuries. Good times!

At college, we'd get drunk and slide down the hills on shower curtains we "borrowed" from the janitor's closet. Good times.

We had so much fun doing it yesterday that we went again today. This time I brought my daughter when she got out of school.

Just as awesome.

Did you pick her up from school and go straight to sledding? If so, thats great! I loved it when my parents would pick me up from school and surprise me with something like that. I'm gonna sound like a 'seed saying this, but sometimes I pick up my son from school and surprise him with an outing of ice fishing. His reaction is unparalleled.

She got off the bus and right into my car. 12 minutes later we were tearing up the slopes.
