Add thermostats to the list of private property the government would like to regulate as the state of California looks to require that residents install remotely monitored temperature controls in their homes next year.
The government is seeking to limit rolling blackouts and free up electric and natural gas resources by mandating that every new heating and cooling system include a "non-removable" FM receiver. The thermostat is also capable of controlling other appliances in the house, such as electric water heaters, refrigerators, pool pumps, computers and lights in response to signals from utility companies. If contractors and residents refuse to comply with the mandate, their building permits will be denied.

I wanted to punch Jimmy Carter in the teeth back in 1978.

Yeah, I kind of was weary on posting it, but I got the story from Engadget. If they felt there was enough validity to post about it, I figured it passed the ronfez.net standards of journalism.

OK, so you have to install an FM receiver on your thermostat and/or water heater, etc. Can't you also buy an FM Scrambler or your own FM Transmitter to block the signals being sent to your house or override the info that was sent?
I'm not saying that I want the law to be passed - it is an insane breach of rights and waaaay too much government intervention for my taste. However, I am sure it would be a way to stick it to the man if it came to that.

Even if it were true, are people saying they'd prefer rolling blackouts in times of need? I wonder what would happen today, if the government imposed the kinds of restrictions we had during WWII. Not that the energy problem in CA is a result of war. But it's really not all that different in terms of shortages.
