View Full Version : Who Should I Root For in the NFC Championship?

This Sunday, in the NFC Championship game, the Giants are playing the Packers at Lambeau Field.
Now, I am a tried and true Jets fan. And I don't apply myself that because you root for one New York team, you must automatically hate the other. I don't call them my team or root for them. They are there and I'll watch them.
BUT...
I've always had a weird relationship with Green Bay. One of the first players I became aware of other than the Jets and Giants growing up was Don Majkowski.
Don't ask.
So I've always watched the Packers out of the corner of my eye. I like Green Bay, I like how they do football. I'm a big fan of "retro" - and Green Bay is the very definition of retro football.
Plus, how can't you like Brett Favre? He's the most popular NFL player. He's a crusty old man! And he's getting the job done.
So who should I root for?

I think you answered it right there. You're a Jet fan, and a Jersey guy. Gotta go with the other local team unless you hate them for some reason, which you don't. A passing interest in another team would factor in for me only if both local teams were out of the mix.

If there's a another "local" team near your favorite team, it is your duty to fucking hate them. Anyone who says they're a Giants and Jets fan, or a Mets and Yankees fan, or a Cubs and White Sox fan or of multiple California or Texas teams or whatever should get the ol' soap in a sock routine. If your team is out, that should just make you hate and root even harder against the other local team.

I'M MOJO PIN AND I'M RUNNING MY MOUTH AND MISSING THE POINT.
First, I'm not a "Jets and Giants" fan. I'm a Jets fan, first and foremost, and the only teams I hate are the teams who have messed around with the Jets the most - the Patriots, the Dolphins, and the Raiders.
Am I going to run out and stock up on Plax or Favre jerseys? No. I don't regularly root for both NY teams, I just don't understand the animosity you supposedly have to have for the other team in market just because they are there. It makes ZERO sense, especially since the Jets and Giants play each other once every four years.
In hockey, I can understand (and embrace) the animosity. In baseball, I can understand it. But in football? Makes no sense. They never play each other.
I understand sports bigamy. I don't like people who say they root for both teams. But I don't have a dog in the fight in the playoffs anymore. I'll definitely be rooting for the Chargers because I HAAAAAATE the Patriots, but I'm unsure who to root for in this game.
I'm leaning more towards Green Bay, because I found that I have a Reggie White jersey in my closet, one of the few non-Jets jerseys I have in my collection.

I'M TENBATS AND I NEED TO START A THREAD ABOUT MYSELF SO PEOPLE WILL TALK ABOUT ME EVEN THOUGH I MADE UP MY MIND BEFORE I HIT "POST."
I think the hatred makes perfect sense, just as much in football as any other sport. You're rasied to root for one team...anyone else is the enemy, especially the other local teams. Who cares if they don't play each other that often? How do baseball rivalries make more sense when teams have been doing the interdivisional thing for less than 15 years now?
It's like gangs scrapping over the same territory. You can only join one and wish destruction on the rest.

It's like gangs scrapping over the same territory. You can only join one and wish destruction on the rest.
The Yankees-Mets rivalry makes sense is because there has been about 100x more "heat" on the Yankees and Mets playing against each other than there ever has on the Giants and Jets playing against each other, ESPECIALLY since the Yankees and Mets faced off in the World Series.
The Jets are nowhere near this game, the Jets have nothing to do with this game, so I'm viewing it from a completely neutral standpoint as a Football Fan. This is not a gang-war because I don't have a deep emotional investment in either team, outside the fact that I watch the Giants every weekend simply because "it's on" and I like to watch football.
I understand that all other teams are "the enemy", but that only counts in the season, on game day. So you're telling me that I have to get all worked up about a team we only play once every four years? Why? Because of "bragging rights"? What bragging rights? We're the Jets, for God's sake, we haven't won a championship in close to 40 years and our most legendary player is a recovering alcoholic who made a complete fool of himself on national TV. Well, wait, the Giants have LT, so I guess it's a push.
Do you know why, as a Jets fan, I can't get worked up to hate the Giants? Because unlike the other sports, I'll always be on the losing side of the argument. The Giants have consistently fielded better teams with better front office management and two more Super Bowl appearances than we have. So why hate a team who constantly outclasses yours, just because they play in the same building?
So I can sound like those idiots who froth at the mouth on WFAN? No thanks. I'll take a pass on that.

Sorry Giants fans, Packers are the better story. Eli will have his day, he's still young, and he's a decent qb.
It looked for the longest time that Favre would end a historic career on a whimper. There's nothing sadder. I have always tended to not get wrapped up in any one team (the Eagles make that easy for me) as much as I love the "great story"
Like it or not, Favre going to, and winning the Super Bowl will be a bigger story than 16 and 0.

I disagree if the two teams do not have a significant history against each other its kind of a phony made up hatred. For example I am a lifelong Knicks fan, I hate Miami, Indiana, Chicago, Boston. I hate them for the rivalries that existed between the teams over the years. At the same time I like to see the Nets do well. The Nets for the most part were always a doormat when the Knicks were good and when the Nets had there run the Knicks were bad. So the two teams never had a meaningful rivalry.
Now if Michael Jordon would have been a Net and they would have beat the Knicks every year in the Playoffs sure I would hate them with a passion. To me you don't have to hate based on geography, it should be because that team ripped your heart out of you chest.

So annoyed that Mara's corpse came out of the grave and applauded when the Jets decided to give you the other half of the money you needed for a new stadium? Come on now.
Show me evidence that the Jets themselves complained. They never rebranded the stadium until Woody took over. It was mainly the Jets FANS who were complaining, not the front office.
Giants Stadium itself lacks any kind of discernible "personality", so I'm not complaining about it, I just don't like fake turf.

Let's be honest here, Eli is graded much tougher simply bc he was traded for four fucking picks and the other QB they gave up is playing pretty much the same type of ball. If he was even just a normal 1st pick of the draft his expectations would be lower. Now both QBs have won two big games and lead them to upset wins to get the their respective Conference Championships. I'd easily put Eli in the top 15 Qbs in the league, simply bc he gets his team to the playoffs EVERY year and is pretty damn durable. Hell, he was drafted in 04 so in terms of development, he's also shown he can adapt, is becoming a leader (as the old guard continues to leave and lose their voice/Shockey/Barber) and truth be told is better since Coughlin stopped trying to go deep on every play. In fact, I'd argue that Coughlin had the most to do with hurting Eli's game in the past. It seems he's found the right mix, and to say Eli hasn't been huge in these playoffs would simply be wrong. There hasn't been one big receiver, one big back or any player of interest carrying them so far. Yet if any could be named it's Manning, Toomer and some D really stepping up. However, I'd rather the team stand tall vs. that of one player. Now GB can't key on just Plex or Toomer, they have to prepare for a team. I think you're WAY off on this and a lot of the topics you bring up here.

Oh God! Please inform me how Joe Namath deserves bc I for one am not convinced one bit. If we only need image, one title or a fur coat to get in, we'll have to do this whole thing over. He DOESN'T deserve to be in. His CAREER was really good, with SOME great years, but he's NOT a HOF QB sorry.
His comp % is just 50%, record is 77-108-3, threw for 173 TDS (very light) versus 220 Interceptions (terrible ratio) for an averaverage of only 197 yards per game. Hell, in his 13 year career guess how many years he threw for more TDS versus Ints? Two, that's right two. I'm sorry, one Super Bowl a few gay cover shots, a fur coat and arrogance doesn't get you in with those stats if you ask me. Let me hear your argument though, as I'd be interested as to how you claim he's worthy.

that comes out not great, but basically, namath is pretty equal to ken obrien. That isnt HOF to me. You havent proved one point to anyone other then the fact that you are a JETS homer to the BDC Yankee level. You might even know less about sports then BDC after reading the shit you actually posted in here. Just nonsense

Its really pointless, if your main concern is winning. The Cubs and the ChiSox don't compete with each other in any real sense for anything baseball wise. Different league altogether. Unless you want to count playing interleague a few games a year, and that more of a fan thing than a baseball thing. Those games count as much as playing the Marlin as far as the Cubs are concerned.
To me, divisional rivals I can understand hating. Yanks-RedSox. Cubs-Cards. Giants-Dodgers. That makes sense, because you compete with them directly in very meaningful divisional games. Games that can decide who gets into the playoffs or not. But the crosstown teams I don't get. Do I root for the Mets? No, but I wish them well. Most of my family are Mets fans. I wish them well, until they play the Yanks. Then I want to sweep the motherfuckers.

I root for the Mets and wish death on the Yankees every day. When the Mets collapse and the Yankees go to the playoffs, I still wish death. I pull for no other team, I just watch the sport because I love it. I have nop horse in the rest of the playoffs, but I know I hate the Giants, Packers and Patriots, but that doesn't mean I have to root for the Chargers

I definitely place more stock in divisional rivalries, but the local stuff has always been something I've just felt when it comes to the White Sox and the Cubs. It's not a matter of them actualy playing each other (though now they do)...it's just more for who has bragging rights for Chicago being "their" town. It's not just the teams themselves...it's indicative often of where you are in the city, where your family is from, your social status, your economic status, your identity, etc., etc.. Just rooting for anyone from your city or opting to vote for another local team even temporarily seems incredibly wishy-washy and disingenuous. Pick a team and stick with them and everyone else be damned.

ok you put one article from a chicago newspaper. how about the fact that there was a HUGE headline/picture with Eli and some awful caption about him basically being the man now. Go read the fluff piece on him and favre. You are just wrong
and how have you PROVEN ME WRONG on namath being in the hall? Says fuckin who? Again ill do this. This is going to be the third time I've posted this, so seriously, when did you prove me wrong:
Year Age Tm Pos G GS Cmp Att Cmp% Yds TD TD% Int Int% Lng Y/A AY/A Y/C Y/G Rate Sk Yds NY/A ANY/A Sk%
Career 129 110 2110 3602 58.6 25094 128 3.6 98 2.7 96 7.0 6.1 11.9 194.5 80.4 353 2654 5.7 4.9 8.9 Ken O'Brien
Career 140 130 1886 3762 50.1 27663 173 4.6 220 5.8 91 7.4 5.2 14.7 197.6 65.5 109 1052 6.9 4.8 2.8 Joe Namath
You're using a QB who played in an ENTIRELY different era than Namath.
Compare Namath to the HOF QBs that played at the time or in the years before him, and you'll see my point.
Every single Super Bowl winning QB with the exception of Earl Morral for the first 10 SBs made the HOF.
Namath had intangibles that helped lead to the merger. You bring up the fur coat, but what you don't understand is that at the time, NO OTHER PLAYER IN THE NFL WAS LIKE THAT.

U guys nailed it here so I have very little to add. I will say that I'll pull more for the team I HATE LESS, but that's as far as I'll go. For example, I'll root for ANYONE over the yanks or red wings.....ANYONE! I'd pull for a Russian team backed by the Chinese under age workers alliance over either of those fucking teams any day of the week.

Well, he DID throw that touchdown pass to Bobby Brady.

I said the exact same thing in a thread about this a couple of years ago. Namath has no business being in the HOF for the reasons spoon stated above. ESPN did a story on the hall of fame and writers/experts said he is the #1 Hall of Famer that doesnt deserve to be in it. He was shit, he didnt guarantee anything he said it in jest and like the media always does they turned it into a guarantee. In this case the media helped his ass. And most importantly he didnt even win the SB, the defense and the running back did.
As for watching Jets games. They are the most boring teams to watch. One thing I hate about living in jersey is we are forced to watch the Jets. Every sunday of every season my cousin and I talk on sunday and one of the 1st things we talk about is how we a re forced to watch the shitty jets and always wish we had the football package.
They did play in the best MNF of all time against Miami. I was at the game and Miami was killing them by halftime so I left and went to a gogo bar. When we walked in the door the game was just about tied. My fav team is Miami and the Jets made a great come back to win but thats it. I would rather do anything else then watch the Jets play.

so this is the second person in the country you found not lapping Manning's balls. Is that supposed to prove a point. Watch 7 minutes of ESPN from yesterday or sunday night and you will see 80 people lapping his balls.
The main point is, do you not see how pathetic you are coming off. I will never again take anything you say seriously after you tried to compare a regular season jets win to a SB game. Even if you say something that happens to be correct, we all know its only cause you got lucky or heard someone who was correct say it. You are awful and no nothing about sports.
And who decided boomer is an authority on all things NFL now? Why cause he played? How is that working for Isiah Thomas' opinions on things. SHUT UP
