Sharpton and His False Outrage At Golf Commentator [Archive]

I don't think there's a thread about this (my search indicated there wasn't), but a female broadcaster for the Golf Channel made an inadvertent comment on Friday that the only way young players could defeat Tiger Woods is "by lynching him in a back alley." She's apologized to Tiger, and apparently, they are friends, and he knows she didn't mean anything.

But now Al Sharpton is involved (http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/news?slug=ap-golfchannel-anchor&prov=ap&type=lgns), and is calling for the firing of the broadcaster, who has been suspended for two weeks.

Utter fucking bullshit.

I was listening to Steven A Smith today and he was saying he was disappointed the company waited for Rev Al's call to suspend her, he wanted immediate action. Obviously the gutless white pussy Smith is teamed with sat there with his mouth shut. God forbid he interject with some common sense.

Contgrats Steven A you now have one less listener. Just like Keith Oberman did and does after he jumped in against Imus.

When these ridiculous incidents occur I hope people remember who says what and adjusts there listing / viewing patterns accordingly.

Sharpton has no ground to stand on here, but that WAS a rough one. No news story has given the comment any context whatsoever so i don't really know how bad it was but I've come to expect that.

When hearing she said tiger should be lynched in an alley, you tend to judge. But after thinking about it I think she was probably trying too hard to be funny and was looking for a way to say beat him up in an alley. She unwisely chose "lynch", tiger happened to be black and she'll loose her job.

I laughed when that racist anthony said somebody should hand Al thier golf bag when walking out of the golf channel building.

Tiger Woods has come out and said she shouldn't be punished. The two have been friends for over 12 years, not that it makes the comment any worse. What is the crock of shit is the Golf Channel orginially just slapped her on the hand, did nothing for several days until Newsday picked the story up and at that point Al got involved.

That brings to mind the villagers with pitchforks and torches going after someone... but nothing in the way Sharpton has suggested.

Sharpton is overracting, but that was a fucking dumb thing to say as a public broadcaster. Use your head, lady. Subtract any racial overtones and it's still a ridiculous thing to say.

I look at this at just yet another in along line of sports broadcasters (ie-most of them) who try to be clever or cute and end up sounding like complete dipshits. Just call the sport.

I don't think she needed to be suspended (though it's not nearly the end of the world)...I just have no problem calling her out for this like I would call out someone like Hawk Harrelson taking about "a can of corn hit into a beaver dam." Pointing out stupid sports broadcasters is easy and fun.

I think she did make a statement she should have. And she apologized for it right away to the person she said it about.

My problem is Sharpton getting involved the way he is, calling for her to get fired.

if you say lynch mob most people will think of the pitchfork and flames group of people and not think of anything racist

but you say lynching and i'm willing to bet 95% of people will associate it with the hangings of black people

I agree, but I actually think race was the last thing in her head when she said it. She was stupid to not think more about her words, but the fact that she didn't think about it is almost the opposite of racist.

Unfortunately, there are still people who intentionally say racist things. The sad thing is, people who aren't racist, still have to choose their words carefully. Hopefully that will change some day.

I get the gist of what you're saying, but this particular one is a pretty pointless thing to hope people can say "freely." I would prefer to hope people just aren't that goddamn dumb in the first place. If she had something like, "yeah, they probably wish they could tie him down and shoot him in the back of the head," it would still sound incredibly moronic, irregardless of race. She just made it worse by picking something that is so racially charged due to our relatively recent history in this country.

Wouldn't the heart of that problem be that the Golf Channel is on basic cable in many areas. Here in Milwaukee it's on Channel 28.
