Moe's Spirograph thread reminded me about this art test that I used to see everywhere in the late 70's / early 80s. It used to be in magazines and comics and I remember seeing commercials for it during the shows I used to watch like re-runs of I Dream of Jeanie and Brady Bunch, etc. Anyone else remember this? There used to be four pictures that you had to draw: the pirate below, a turtle wearing a turtle neck sweater and two other ones that I can't recall.
I really don't know what the scam was. Afterall, a company doesn't spend all that money advertising a free art test unless there's something in it for them. I did send away for it once. I don't remember how old I was but I must have been 8 or 9. I was by far the best artist in my class. I admit I had a little problem with the shading but I think that I did a pretty good job overall. I remember getting back my evaluation in the mail which pretty much ripped my drawings mercilessly. I'm pretty sure that that experience turned me off to drawing forever. I can barely draw a stick person now. Those Fuckers!

There was an Art School similar to like a Conn School of Broadcasting but for Art. They always ran commercials for a free art test by mail, to gain admission to the school. Could this possibly be the test you took?

Yeah, that's definitely the art test I took though I remember the commercials I saw being much cheesier. I guess they got better from the 70s to the 90s when the commercials in your link are from. Thanks.
They're still fuckers for crushing my dreams.

I remember the commercials with a bald dude just holding the art test asking if you like art. Kinda like the bald guy who stands there with tools asking if you like working on cars. Do they just have a generic shitty trade school commercial company

I drew Tippy the Turtle (in the middle). At first, they said I didn't qualify for their school. Then what seemed like a year later (probably a couple of months), they sent me another letter saying that my drawing was good, and I qualified to go to their school. Damn. I coulda gotten edumicated at the age of 10.

There's an art magazine that deals primarily with graffiti and pop-surrealist artists that regularly has artists they interview re-do the "art tests" into custom pieces... juxtapoz.com<p> The real art test is to make something anyone wants to look at for more than five seconds. (imitates father)"Yeah, that's good. So how's school going?"

Is that the one with the nasally Steve Martin look-alike asking, "Do you like to doodle?"

my brother did that same deal...maybe he'll get on here and post about it.
from what I recollect, our mom called...we got the pamphlet and he drew it.
he got a 99 I think....something about the pirate wasn't "gay" enough is the reason for the -1.

Isn't that "Blinky" on the left?
A college professor, Bill Gus Komodore, used to refer to that and have us on the floor laughing....
