a lot of people go to the gym and say they just wanna lose weight and dont wanna "bulk up", first off I love the people who get worried theyre gonna get all bulky if they touch a dumbbell. It takes years of consistent weight training to get like that but weight lifting versus cardio boils down to the aerobic versus anaerobic issue. When you do a spinning class or the treadmill, thats aerobic, weight lifting and resistance training is anaerobic. The difference boils down to the amount of fat you burn and the fat you burn throughout the day after the work out. You burn fat with both but with weights the fat burning is greater both during and especially after the work out. With aerobic you burn fat with the assistance of oxygen, in anaerobic you do so without the oxygen. You need the balance because aerobic burns fat but also muscle, the ratio varies but its approx. 75% fat and 25% muscle, with anaerobic its close to 100% fat and the body burns fat for hours after your work out, which is not the case with treadmills or any aerobic exercise, you burn the majority of energy during the actual work out.

I wont go on and on, if you wanna read up more, this site offers an easy explanation http://www.doctorsexercise.com/journal/aerobic.htm

But basically, toss in a little resistance training with your aerobic exercise as well for maximum fat and weight loss and overall health benefit.

Heart rate is the key in any type of exercise, its better to do a fast run at maximum heart rate for 10 mins than do a brisk run for 30 or 40 minutes.
