I have a DS-1 and it gets the job done. But I was looking at Electro Harmonix's Little Big Muff and it seems to get much better reviews. what do you think?

Tone is extremely personal and individualistic, but the only pedal I ever found worth a shit was the Ibanez Tube Screamer.

Now I don't use any effects or pedals at all, just pure tube amp gain.

I looove the Ibanez Tube Screamer.
I had an original. Now I have the re-issue (with an additional gain setting called "Turbo").

It does it all.

EDIT: Ya beat me to it, Gvac! Ha!!

Go test out the Muff in the store and see what you think. The distortion you get from it will be vastly different from the DS-1.

It's hard to match an original tube screamer, rat or dist+. IMO, The re-issues don't sound nearly as good. I've been using a Fulltone (overdrive) OCD for a while, but recently acquired a Hermida Zendrive... The holy grail of overdrives, and I love it. Like Gvac said, it depends what tone your looking for. I prefer overdrives over distortion these days.

Hyper Metal is too tinny and high pitched, no balls.

i do own the tube screamer, works well but i need something a little heavier for rythm. I play a lot of Classic Rock and Grunge, i think im gonna go with the big muff

You've intrigued me with that Zendrive, Tele.

We gotta jam.

Acoustically first, of course.

Hell yeah. Looking forward to it. I learned about the ZD from a recent Guitar Player magazine issue. Worth checking out, but they're getting tough to find. If you like your TS-9, you'll probably really dig it.

been using one of these for a few years

of the hundreds of settings I've found 5 or 6 i'm happy with. it's conveniant to switch between distortion, acoustic, phaser, chorus, however i've been unable to find one good wawa effect... manipulating the volume pedal could be tricky due to the volume/output differences of each effect

I've been able to work out a great rockabilly/slap-back tone with my DigiTech RP100. Played through a Fender Blues Deville tube amp it sounds just like the old Sun Records tracks.

Hey Duke, the most important question of all is what amp are you playing through?

I have a distortion pedal but I never use it. The amp's is good enough for me.

but gvac's right- tone is something so personal, there is no "must have pedal"

For amp modeling and recording, the Line 6 Pods are cool. But amp modeling is for those who want amp modeling, for live I like to stay real, the usual chain of Boss/other stomp pedals. The tube screamer by Boss is nice, the Metal Zone I have.

Like Gvac said, its all about what you want to sound like.

People who listen to me say I have an individual tone known by the names 'horrific' or 'disasterous' or 'he cant be serious, can he?', perhaps youve heard some local bands with the same tone.

Who else is old enough to remember Tom Scholz's Power Soak? I could iron clothes with the heat that generated.

Oooohhhhhhhhhhhh I'm old. Creak. Groan. Creak.

Right now I use:

But I also have a Big Muff for shits and giggles. Most of what I play doesn't warrant the muff, but I like to play through it from time to time.

If your goal is to make it seem as though you recorded your bass tracks over the telephone... this is the unit for you.

(I'll never part with it though.)

I have a 100 watt Galien Krouger backline 100 (for a while GK did make guitar amps)

Its an alright amp, but i also have the tech 21 sans amp classic.
