I've been doing a lot of walking lately and I started using my pedometer to track my steps. The recommended daily amount of steps to take is 10,000 for a healthy lifestyle. I'm getting there. My goal is to hit 10,000 consistently each day and then work towards more such as 12,000 steps, etc.

The pedometer I have has a usb port so I can plug it into my pc and I have software that keeps track of how I'm doing in comparison to my set goals.

Its got to be different for everyone. 10k steps for a midget is less than for a normal size person, but i figure it is a goal number to get people up and going!

I bet we could find a hack for that pedometer so you could kick it up to 12k without ever getting up from the computer.

Now you're exercising smart.

I use the pedometer as well.

Today has been the closest I have gotten to 10K in a while and I I have done is walk around at work. So Far today I have had 7406 steps.

My supervisor uses the pedometer to calculate her steps and the rest she doesnt do during the day she goes home and walks on the treadmill, my parents recently got a treadmill so I am going to do the same thing.

The steps that the pedometer counts is based on your individual stride so everyone's is different.

You can measure your stride by taking 10 steps and measuring the distance in inches. If for example 10 steps = 320 inches, you would take the total inches 320 and divide it by 10...which would equal 2 feet 8 inches. On the pedometer I have, if you enter the measurements it will pretty accurately measure your daily steps.

This is the one I have....

While it's true that it depends on who you are and how far your normal stride is, 10,000 steps is usually said to be about 5 miles.
