I used to spin a few times a week, but back in july I had this crazy Nazi like instructor who was covering for my usual spin instructor and made us do crazy stuff and I broke my tail bone because of her. So Ive been off the bike now since July and had to let my butt heal for 6 months, cant wait to get back to spinning. Any other spinners? I loved the rush it gave me and it was a quick way to burn like 800 calories.

I have thought about trying spinning, but I would need a remedial class. I have been on my butt so long that walking to the fridge makes me breathe hard these days.
Do they make "starter" spinning classes or am I expecting too much? I am assuming it is all out pedal-pounding for 45 minutes and I am just going to have to get into better shape before giving it a shot.
...and I was sooo ready to open with a spinning/midget sex joke when I realized what forum I was in. :furious:

Same.
I would only enter an intermediate class and they only offer one a week at my gym.
The idea of being locked down in a room with blacklights kind've scares me and i would like to be able to better handle the class than i imagine i can.
I have heard one class pretty much kills 1000 calories.

When I started the spinning classes at my gym, it was only one class, no beginners. So I went and told the instructor it was my first time and she was easy on me, told me what to do, eased the resistance and taught me good posture with your shoulders and hands, etc...

I dig spinning, because I need to get my ass kicked. I was just zoning out on treadmills and ellipical trainers. I also like sitting in the back and watching the chicks work their asses.
Just being honest

I Any other spinners? .
Spinning and boxing are the 2 best forms of cardio workouts.
I have done both but I recently had knee surgery so both have been off limits.

Swimming as well. If you are doing laps and not just playing in the water, swimming is extremely high on the scale. I was at my CV height when I was swimming in HS. It's an amazing workout if you do it right.

i joined the gym next door to my job and they have a swimming pool. I used be on a swim team years ago. if they ever get me back home from this business trip i might actually be able to attend!
swimming does give you a fantastic work out.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit if I can do it, you can certainly do it. Start slow and your instructor should show you how to set up your bike at the right level and should teach you the correct posture of the bike so you dont fuck anything up. Just go at your own pace at first and then speed comes with time. It's exhausting and adrenaline pumping at the same time.

couldn't you sue if you got injured because of the instructor?

No. When you sign the gym contract they have something in the legalese about things like that and that you exercise at your own risk. But when I did complain to the gym manager, they waived my monthly gym dues for 4 months.

Check the YMCA. Most of the YMCAs are updating everything up to and including offering spin classes of all levels. You can do it and effemeboobs is right, it is a rush once you complete the first class. I'll bet there are a lot of first timers in your class and who cares?----its good for you and you might meet some cool people.

I understand the hesitation of starting a class with more experienced participants but the classes I've taken have not focused on the individual but the routine...if you take it easy 'climbing the hill' no one will call you out...

I've taken one spin class and absolutely loved it.
I was sweaty and tired at the end of it, but it was the best workout ever. I haven't been back to a spin class because they offer it at times I had trouble making . . . for example, the class I took was at 6:45pm on a weeknight and I was so pumped on endorphins I couldn't sleep.
However, my gym revised its class schedule recently so I think I will be able to make it on the weekends.
If I am lucky, I will be able to get to class early and speak to the instructor for help adjusting the bike beforehand. It's tough being tall!
Oh, and I recommend not going when you are hungry. I almost threw up because I went to class on an empty stomach.

yea it burns a ton of calories but you gotta build up stamina for those, I didnt dare set foot in a spin class till about 10 months after i started cardio work but obviously its different for everyone. I wasnt concerned with the blacklights as much as the awful stench and lack of oxygen in the room. I did about 30 minutes and burned over 700 calories but of course I was like 260 pounds at the time, so I burn more energy.

I do an X-bike class at my gym. I've never done spinning, but I guess it's pretty similar. Definitely a good way to keep up the endurance when it's too cold to ride outside.

i just my first spinning class last week and it was amazing.
its very intense but everyone should try it because you set your own resistance. Each bike has a gear shift style thing that allows you to determine how hard you have to work. The instructor keeps the pace and lets you know how quick you should peddle but you basically set the rate yourself.
Everyone should try it. Just let the instructor know its your first class. If you don't ride a bike at all, i'd recommend you practice on a stationary until you can ride for about 45 mins or an hour without stopping (even if its a slow pace). If you ride at all, you should be capable of a class.
