I'm not going to set an unreasonable target for myself but i think if i set it at 10lbs and achieve it i will be more likely to reach 15 and so on until i lose the desired amount.

I'm going to start weighing keeping track of pounds shed and post that part here.

Also, is a digital scale better than a regular one? I know a friend who used them and they were always very unreliable and gave the wrong weight.

I mean they could be. Go with what you have now and weigh something on it that you definitely know the weight of to determine how off it actually is and if it is off by a certain amount use that amount when weighing yourself. Don't invest in something when it's truly not needed.

you should be able to do that with no problem if you commit to doing it.

Summer is 20 weeks or so away thats only 1 1/2 pounds per week. If you just worked out and ate what you normally eat you will do it. When you first start out dieting the weight should fly off, if your strict and work out. Its usually only after a few months thats you plateau and loss 1 pound or so a week. I think if you go on a real diet and work out plan you should loss 20 pounds the first month and you will be doing it the right and healthy way.

Good Luck!!!

Oct 07: 190 lbs. body fat: 21% Sexy A cups

Now: 178 lbs. body fat: 8-9% Hey- where'd my boobies go?

Hockey 3 nights a week alternated with the gym 3 nights a week (50 or so minutes in the weight room followed by 40 minutes swimming laps)

Didn't lose a ton of weight- just put it back where it belonged. Still working on the final bottom two in the six pack- they are there, just need a little more definition.

Best part is that I occasionally have lower back flare ups (hockey)- the swimming after working out is the only thing that wipes out the pain, so I have a natural incentive to go regularly.

once a week isn't all that bad, but from november to december i went totally sober (as in didn't even touch so much as a drop of booze) and lost an average of 6lbs. a week. you'd be surprised how much weight booze keeps on you.

I'm pretty sure I'd be another 15 lbs lighter if I didn't drink so much. I may have gone one week without drinking since I started my diet/exercise back in August, but I have cut it back to about twice a week and try to stick to liquor. Hour-long cardio 4-5 times a week helps keep the pounds moving though.

I always found the digital one to be the best ones I have seen. It is what my doctors use as well.

I guess it depends on the quality of the scale. I had a digital one that I would use to weigh myself, then step off for a minute, step back on and gain 20 lbs. So i asked the wife for one of the old style scales that you see in most doctors offices (with the little slide to tell you how tall you are) and that's been dead solid perfect.

Damn you, Mike and your truthiness!!! What next... I'm supposed to stop smoking?

Mike Teacher
01-09-2008, 05:20 AM
Oh yeah I quit smoking in the last 6 months.

I'm a friggin Monk now.

Quitting was easy; you just don't smoke. Again, no one wants to hear...

At least with cigs you can just quit. You still gotta eat.

As 'too cool for the forum' my post above may come off, it's because I tried every fucking diet on earth. Every. All.

Let's talk about Atkins if ya like, coz I talked to Atkins. I sat across from his desk and asked him, and his response was simple: No one follews the diet. Few have the discipline to change, or for some reason, Dont Want to Change. They Want to Stay Fat.

Yes thats all I did. All I did was be hungry, seriously hungry, for about three years. I lost about a pound a week for 140 weeks. Again, no one wants that; they want it yesterday, and because of that, they get nothing.

I'm just a bit frustated by all the talk and planning and discussion and if you are reading this right now, and are trying to lose weight, and havent done something real yet, chances are, you never will. Not being a dick, it's statistics. The failure rates of diets, across the board, 99%+. Because dieting doesnt change your life. Changing your life changes your life.

I bet some of you havent looked at a mirror at yourself. Oh, you see a reflection, but can you step out of yourself and examine the creature you inhabit. Can you begin to observe this animal; how it behaves? How it reacts? How it steps into automatic modes of behaviour, mostly negative. How it reacts to outside stimuli; when the usual automatic laziness, anger, jealousy, etc kicks in.

Can we develop a discipline where we begin to notice these things? Because most of what we do, we dont notice at all. Were on automatic. We dont even think about what we do. If we can noptice what/who we *reallly* are; we can begin somewhere real. We can start to develop a discipline where, instead of the usual behaviour and reactions, we can...

CHOOSE NOT TO REACT AS WE HAVE IN THE PAST

When Angry, can we step away, put the focus elsewhere, like bringing attention to the blood circulation in our hand? Huh? What? Yes. Instead of reacting with anger like you have since day 1; react with something else. React by doing nothing. Very very few people I know, almost no musicians, know how to do nothing. So dead fucking serious here. We can learn to react by Not getting angry, by Not eating the same way, by Not falling into our automatic schemes.

This is the only way I have found in 40+ years of self-examination, to really change one's life.

The feeling you will get during real transformation, ironically, feels exactly and precisely like you are losing your mind. Becuase you are. You're losing the old one; breaking the neuron connections that have dug such deep furrows in our behaviour. We are mostly automatice robots, and thats really sad, because just beneathe the robot layer of automatice life lies the riches of the life of another type of life, of being really really alive in this world, and seeing the riches of another world, the real world, not the world of our biases and filters and automania.

Ramblin' he a ramblin' guy....

I was talkin about this to a friend yesterday, you really should also limit weighing yourself to once a week. Always remember its really the inches you lose that count, so you can lose fat but not lose weight. Especially for women this is more of an issue cause you all have crazy bodies with your hormones and water retention, etc. So you may just be retaiing a little water and losing fat and inches but the scale may say you gained a pound or two and then you lose that in a day or whatever. But the scale can be your enemy cause if you weigh yourself daily, you can get upset or discouraged and if you all of a sudden gain a pound or two, then you may do something kooky or just get upset.

i agree with weigh in 1x per week. and make sure its at the same time (morning, or nite).
if you normally weigh in in the mornings, but weigh in at nite after a meal one time its going to show heavier.

consider it "the biggest loser" for rf netters...

I was thinking that other measurements could be helpful to gauge our overall progress. (In high school, nobody could believe that I weighed 160lbs because I'm tall so it doesn't show on me like it does on someone shorter . . . so that made me feel awkward. Weight loss is hard enough without looking at the same number on the scale once you hit your plateaus!)

For example, I may reach a weight plateau quicker than a guy, but I may be losing more inches from my waist/hips the more I work out and eat properly. . .and waist/hip ratio is a big number in the health world at present because of the relationships between waist/hip ratio and other health problems being studied now. (I.E. - Diabetes, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, etc.)

BMI is also a good number to post, too. It's really easy to find a BMI calculator online (Discovery Health Channel is doing the National Body Challenge right now - it's free to sign up and you get a simple health assessment to help you set a realistic goal for the duration of the Challenge - and one of the measurements they use is the BMI.)

Currently, I weigh in at 203.5 (rounded up to 204); I should weigh between 149-170lbs.
I am 5'8" tall. I wear size 14 jeans. I would like to wear a 10.
My waist-to-hip ratio is 0.7; I should get it to 0.8
My BMI is 30.2; it should be between 22-25.1

(I just copied my numbers from my login at Nat'l Body Challenge.)

By my 30th birthday, which is coming up at the end of March, I hope to be down to 180-ish.
By June, I hope to drop another 20 lbs. [160-ish]
By August, I hope to be down to 150 and have developed the nutritional and physical habits to stay there for a good long while.

Final goal (by 10/18 - my 40th) - 185 (74 pounds)

And before anyone wonders if these numbers are realistic.... 5 years ago I lost the same 70 pounds in only 5 months

Thanks.

I tried to figure it out by multiplying the number of weeks (10) by the maximum number of pounds I could lose in a week (2) and came up with 180 for an "ideal" number. I can live with being 180 because that was the heaviest I'd ever been, after my freshman year of college. In my Sophomore year, I started dropping pounds because I had to walk everywhere and I changed my eating habits to mostly vegetarian. (The dining hall meat used to make me sick.)

I also aim to walk a very challenging marathon and a half over 2 days this October. I will need to be a lot more fit than I ever had to be for this event due to changes the organizers have made to the route.

like they say, take it a day at a time, well take it a pound at a time. Set the goal and then forget it, just concentrate on the puzzle pieces and not the whole puzzle. 2 pounds a week is a very realistic goal, a lot of people wanna lose like 17 pounds a week or some crazy number. Numbers arent always everything, people get excited when they lose 10 pounds their first week on a diet but ignore that most of it is water weight. You can lose 6 pounds but only 2 of it may be fat.

You seem to be in a great state of mind and realistic, you'll do great!

actually, according to weight watchers, a piece of bacon is 1 point.
you could have a piece or 2 of bacon everyday and it would be ok.

Hello everyone, this is my first post and I would like to introduce myself. I actually joined when I saw this Forum. I started at 341 pounds about 1 year and 8 months ago. I'm now 195Lbs, I work out 6 days week and lift weights. I have totally changed my eating habit. I eat healty about 95% of the week. My body and life have changed for the better. It really takes alot of will power. I do thing now I never would thought possible. I run 3 mile, me running, I still can't believe it sometimes, I still smoke Pot and Ciggs. And I drink every Saturday. So I didn't stop , living to lose the weight. I just do it in moderation. So hello and good luck to everyone out htere. Anyone ca do it if you put your mind to it. Diets do not work by the waty. Diet is how you start, lifestyle change is how you make progress and keep it off. First time I lost 100 lbs and I gained it all back. Won't happen this time. If anyonwe would like to see some pics, I could post them, if I figure out how. Good luck eveyone and Ron and Fez RULE

I was at 250 in Aug...then my uncle had his stroke and scared me!!

Now 235

Going down to 190 by July 1!

Ok So I went to the Doc when I was sick a couple weeks back and got a physical also. I got the results and I was pissed at my self.

Bad news is my Cholesterol stinks. My Bad cholesterol is normal but the good one is too low. Like Horribly low. Good news is that I started going back to the gym in Sept. so I have been working out which probably helps me. I have a new Diet the Doc gave me and I am being retested in 2 months.

I did weigh myself yesterday and I am at 231. So I am down 4 lbs in about 10 days so I am happy I am still in the right direction. Now I need to stick to the diet and I will be fine.

Down seven pounds since the post New Year's diet began. Going strong.

Oh and ps, if anyone is having trouble with a diet in terms of food, I highly suggest the Fat Smash, it's a no nonsense deal that really works. The last time I lost a bunch of weight it was on it and I'm on it again and it's working really well. Just have to stick with it this time.

I am down 25 lbs in 13 days

Now i am a big fatty but am working on it so i know not to expect this kind of weight loss after maybe one more week but i am working at it

I am eating much healthier. I have eliminated my usual breakfast of 2 donuts and a big coffee to cereal and V8. Changed my lunch from a sub from Subway and a large soda and chips or some kind of sweet to either soup or salad and a yogurt and cottage cheese and a 100 calorie snack pack. And have eaten fish for dinner the last two weeks and eliminated all fast food

I want to look better then i do now for when my nephew is born in June and i am hoping to drop 75 lbs by that time so i think i can do it.

You guys have been great inspiration for me and i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and my family if they knew of my inspiration would say the same

Ultimately I'd like to weigh 185 lbs. I started the week (Sunday night) at 211 lbs. and as of this morning (Friday) I'm down to 204 lbs. So I lost 7 lbs. this week. However, I don't go to the gym on the weekends and I eat like a pig so I'll prob. put 4 lbs. back on by Sunday night.

Im now down 45 lbs since January 1st

Lifestyle changes over diet is the biggest thing for me so far. I am actually really happy about this and cant wait for the weather to get warmer as this brutal cold snap in the midwest has stopped me from being able to go walking.

And i will say that my back has gotten a lot better since dropping this weight

Well like i said earlier i was and still am a big fatty and when i moved to Ohio i got depressed and ate a lot of food

I then decided at the new year to change things. No more fast food, no donuts, no subway subs, one soda a day down from like 3 or 4 a day

I now have a good breakfast, a banana snack at about 10:30, and for lunch i have salad, yogurt and cottage cheese

Dinner is usually fish and a small salad, but lately i have sprinkled in some pasta or pork or chicken and some rice or a potato

And i also drink about 160 oz of water a day to help curb my hunger. So a lot of what i have lost was the extra weight i gained when i first moved to Ohio

I am sure the weight loss will slow down, and i am still about 80 lbs from where i would like to be

Oh and one other thing i am 6'5 1/2 so i have a lot of room to pick up extra lbs.

The main reason i am trying to lose weight is that my brother is having a kid in June and i am pretty sure i am going to be asked to be godfather and i want to look better for the pictures

OK, so this is what I posted as a baseline about 2 weeks ago:

I weigh in at 203.5 (rounded up to 204); I should weigh between 149-170lbs.
I am 5'8" tall. I wear size 14 jeans. I would like to wear a 10.
My waist-to-hip ratio is 0.7; I should get it to 0.8
My BMI is 30.2; it should be between 22-25.1

Within a week of this posting, I was up 2 lbs to 205.5
I changed a few things about my eating habits last week.
This week I am down to 203 lbs. even.

Total loss from baseline: 0.5 lbs

I haven't made it back to the gym, but plan to do a spin class on Saturday morning.

I haven't taken new measurements yet.
I think I will do that next month.

After spending the last year basically laying on my back eating potato chips off my belly and licking the salty grease off my mits I finally started working out again about three weeks ago. My stupid kickboxer roommate said I should start by "doing a thousand jumps of the rope" out on our patio. Fucker neglected to tell me it was a heavy rope - which works your arms and shoulders more than your legs - and that 1000 turns is what HE - an athelete - does! Dick. So I started with 600, followed by a 30 minute beaching in the puddle of slime that formed under me from my own sweat and the third world filth that had collected for weeks on my patio floor. Unable to bend my calves I limped around for a couple of days like a guy with two new prosthetic legs - which isn't at all an unusual sight here in Cambodia where farming is more like a game of "Landmine Twister" than just about anywhere else in the world.

A few days later I did 500 turns and hobbled around in mockery of the legless beggars for a few more days. Finally, on the third try I did 1000 turns. I probably overdid it, but fuck Richard! Old people are handi-capable. I spent another half hour wallowing around in the new puddle of floor sludge, performing an homage to Clooney's post-fingernail torture scene in Syriana. But I managed to check the time on my stopwatch. Time-to-beat = 15 minutes. Sonovabitch roommate picked up the rope and did it in 5 in his work clothes just to be a cock.

Over the next two weeks I stopped getting sore and was doing 1000 every day and got my time down to 10 minutes. But then I started pulling my left calf muscle every other time and had to take a week off from the rope.

Now Richard, the South Park Timmy-headed Irish git, throws out: do 100 burpies, (drop and do a push-up, get up and jump in the air, repeat), like it's a walk to the corner store. I do 70 and I'm back to shivering and whaling like a baby calf in my own afterbirth. "Ýou're supposed to be a personal trainer - haven't you ever heard of starting off slowly, you Mick bastard!" I ask Richard. "Wha' ere ya cryin' aboot, ya wee cunt ya? I do 100 all the time - I'll be under 5 minutes soon, which is the level of a top-conditioned athelete." Prick.

So the last week and a half I've got my 100 burpies in at just under 20 miutes, then brought it down now to 14:30. Now the bastard seems to show up at the end of my burpies and goads me into doing extra push-ups, (Richard told me to do clapping push-ups but I could only manage flipping-him-off push-ups), squats and sit-ups. "No after-birth - no gain" seems to be his fitness motto.

The good news is, while I can't trust the scales in this country any more than I can trust the moto drivers, I can see a difference already. My mits are perkier. My love handles are smaller. I feel better - after my showers anyway. I don't crave fatty foods or soda as much any more. I drink shitloads of water.

Also, I'm becomming a believer in Richard's informed theory that shorter, very intense workouts are better for conditioning and weight loss by raising the metabolism for around 36 hours rather than the 12 or so that you get from longer medium intensity work-outs. It's a big cure for the boredom by allowing you to try to break your old records and guage progress. One I get rid of the green-apple splatters that I've got now I should have my muscles healed and I can finally start alternating rope-jumping and burpies - with as much extra exercises thrown in at the end as I can do. The manky Irish git is doing me some good afer all.

Former basketball player and runner.

Height: 6'0"

Starting weight (1/2) - 259

Interim goal (by 2/28) - 225 (34 pounds)

Second goal (by 8/1) - 189 (70 pounds)

Final goal (by 10/18 - my 40th) - 185 (74 pounds)

-------------------------------------------------------------

1 week progress (1/9) - 7 pounds down

And before anyone wonders if these numbers are realistic.... 5 years ago I lost the same 70 pounds in only 5 months

Update
After a rough 2 weeks where I gained weight (thanks in part to the NFL playoffs), I got back on my routine this week and have lost the weight I gained.

As of my last weigh-in (2/6): 245 lbs, down a total of 14 pounds since 1/1.

OK, so I'm guessing that I started losing weight somewhere around January of 2007. Before then I was working 4 pm till Midnight or 1 am and then coming home and eating a full dinner before falling asleep with the plate on my lap. I went back to working a normal schedule and began adding a little bit of exercise in here and there.

Recently I've been exercising on a daily basis, aside from maybe two days during the week. Nothing major, walking during lunch at work, crunches and push-ups at night when I get home, eating less junk food and smaller portions of normal food. I've kinda reached the point where I'm not losing anymore and I really need to add some cardio to the routine, aside from the walking.

So the stats are:
Height- 5'6"

January 2007
Weight: 225
Waist: 38-40
Shirt: always XL

Now
Weight: 175
Waist: 34 (could prob squeeze into a 32 but not trying that yet)
Shirt: Large (have a little room in those)

It was fairly easy for me. No pure junkfood and some simple exercising in my apartment.

I still haven't gone all-out just yet. There's been some major upheaval in my life so, I'm calling this part of the makeover the "warm up". In a few weeks, I should have a clear skedj and I can commit to my 90-day-boot-camp routine.

been a while since i posted my progress, things have kind of plateaued for me but i havent been that great keeping my diet as under control as i have liked over the last 2 weeks. So since Jan. 1 i have lost a grand total of 53 pounds which isnt bad but i was hoping to have done better. This shitty Ohio has not helped as i was hoping i would be able to be walking on a routine basis but windchill and cold temps have kept me in as its been close to 20 or below that every day it seems.

So im still about 75 lbs from where i would like to be so its still a work in process for me but i know i will get there.

I am thinking i could be in for trouble as i havent smoked any dope since Jan. 1 and am going to finally get some this weekend so i will have to stop the munchies and force myself to drink water instead of eating. Mind over matter i guess

I am up to an average of 55 pushups a day, about 50 situps. I am also purchasing a treadmill for my place cause it is too cold, and icy to go running some mornings. The other thing I have done is change my diet. Mornings are cereal, and I enjoy a bow of fruit when at work as a snack/mid meal. Lunch is something sensible, and dinner is a meat or fish, with veggies.

With the weight bar I am up to doing curls, thrusts, and bench presses on a regular basis. I am aiming to knock down at least 15 pounds by July.

I figured I'd toss on two plates and go for it. I did my reps, it was a whole new experience. The pressures that it put on my body were so much more than what I was used to when doing 210. My legs really strained during the first pull. There was excessive grunting all around. Not sure if I will go that high again next week but at least I have a new high benchmark for myself.

Shedding the weight has made Wygal far more than a local sensation, though.
It’s brought her national attention, with a recent appearance on CNN’s "Fit Nation" segment about weight loss and an upcoming feature story slated for the May issue of Oxygen fitness magazine.
At her sister’s encouragement, Wygal submitted her story for the television segment that aired about two weeks ago.

Wygal, 30, said the secret to shrinking her 5-10 frame from 298 pounds down to 175 pounds was purely a matter of counting calories, keeping a food journal, and doing some serious exercise.
She was in her first year of teaching when she began the task.
Wygal bought lots of books listing the calories in everything from fast food to so-called health foods — and she built a diet on healthier foods like fruits, vegetables, grilled chicken, oatmeal, egg whites, and protein shakes.
It took her three years to lose the weight, with the majority of it coming off in 2004.

Pretty damn impressive, if you ask me!

Richard told me a few weeks back that the American lawyer chick he's training is good at burpies. I've never met her, but I've seen her and she looks like your average American cheerleader about five years after HS with about 10 extra pounds on her. She'd be hot if she didn't look like the typical upper-middle-class feminist NGO snob that this place is saturated with. But he says she's a hard worker at the gym and, when I was doing my 100burpees at about 13 minutes she had just broken the 10 minute barrier. "NO FUCKING WAY!" I told him. "Way," he responded. Aware that he might be pulling my tits just to test what motivates people - me - I started doing burpees almost every day just to break out of the women's league.

I got under 13 minutes last week and a couple days ago went for time again and hit 9:53. WOO!!! I SMSed my roommate to gloat and he sent back: "Ali's time is currently 9:03 and she's due to for another timed set this week."

Motherfuck.

So here's my progress so far: I'm training with the cheerleaders and I'm not sure if I'm going to make the squad without blowing the quarterback in the equipment room. Yay me!

If I may suggest something, make sure you have a decent sized breakfast. I lost about six lbs in six weeks before exercising and it was because of my diet. Breakfast with either oatmeal or honey nut cheerios and a piece of whole wheat bread with honey. Or ever third day an egg with whole wheat toast. Then yogurt at about 10:00 am.

Then lunch is turkey with mustard on whole wheat and either a salad with light dressing or another yogurt.

Mid afternoon, I'd give myself a couple M&Ms and bunch of walnuts. Plus I was drinking ice water throughout the day.

By the time dinner came, I ate normally but because I hadn't been starving myself, I didn't eat as much for dinner.

And nothing after 8 pm to eat.

And the best thing about the above is, it's not really a diet, because I hope to eat like this the rest of my life. Not completely rigidly. I've got to have a reuben sandwich every now and then, but for the most part.

Congrats to you as well, Hippo.

I've been loving this weight loss. I don't feel like I've been depriving myself of anything (although I have), and I love running and working out in the mornings, and catching up on eps of different tv shows. Especially now that I've cracked the 3.5 mile limit. I start getting the runner's high and feel I can keep running.

Now I just need to build some muscle in my upper body (mostly toning), and keep burning off fat. Right now, my scale says my fat % is about 20 %. It was 24.5 % when I started.

I am Running approximately 1.6 miles now while Briskly walking 1. Inluding a warm up I am at 2.85 miles. So I have a lil less than a month to get running a total of 3.1 miles. Its very exciting.

I really have no experiance at running at all so its been an interesting time. Running outside and trying to find a good pace has been nuts, but it is a cool Challenge!

burpees, I still can't get down under the 9:03 from over a month ago, but I do add more exercizes to the end of it.

I should drop fifteen to twenty by October. If I don't die from heat stroke first. I'll be in touch.

I would force myself to eat breakfast if I were you, especially if you're doing physical work in the daytime. A big breakfast - with plenty of protein and carbs - really will jump-start your metabolism and will help you burn more calories all day than if you hadn't eaten breakfast at all. And it will keep your energy levels up. Your body might take a week or so to get used to it, if you're skipping breakfasts now, but you'll notice the difference - sustained energy levels - before long.

I don't know if it's a good thing long-term, but since I"ve been trying to trim a little bit off, I've been weighing myself every day (using the Wii Fit scale, which comes complete with graphs of your weight from day to day).

I've found that actually seeing the cause and effect of my diet from day to day has really motivated me to the point where I've been losing at a clip of about a pound per day over the last week, which I think is pretty solid.

Now...whether or not staring at my weight potentially fluctuating back and forth every day will ultimately drive me insane...well, I guess I'll find out.

I broke through into a whole new level of exercise on the patio today. After shocking myself with the 8:19 for the burpees the other day I've been trying to shave some time off the ropes too, and had come to the conclusion that my 9:59 time was my limit - it takes an average of 45 seconds just to jump 100 so I didn't think I had much to shave off my rest times. I missed it by 2 seconds last week and then blew up and missed it by a minute and a half the other day. Today was set to be a normal workout day and I had my three bananas and waited half an hour when suddenly I didn't feel like working out at all. So I sat there watching Girl Fight for another half hour and when it was over I ate an apple to try to sugar up again to force some kind of workout out of me, (I haven't been slacking lately, though - I had to force myself to rest last week after going 10 straight days without). Anyhoo, after the apple I dragged my ass out and started jumping. At 200 I didn't feel winded - unusual - and started to shave my rest times. By 600 Not only did I know I was going to beat the unbeatable record, I was going to nuke the fucker. I felt emotionally neutral - detatched - and kept cutting the breaks shorter and shorter, surprised that my shoulders were holding up for each 100 with so little rest. I hit 1000 at 9:20. I wasn't doubled over so I decided to keep going, not shooting for 2000, but just until I started to feel like shit. I kept up with the rate of 1 minute for 100 jumps and a rest for another 300 before I started to fall behind. At 600 I started to gain the time back and picked the pace back up and hit 2000 at 19:54. Somehow I beat my previous best - and, I thought, unbeatable - time for twice the duration. I took almost 7 minutes off my best time for 2000 from last week. What the fuck is that all about? How the fuck am I supposed to know what's possible and impossible for this pushing-40 former fat ass of mine? I know I'm going to try to beat this record and never get anywhere close and not even have a chance again until I've given up altogether. I don't understand how it works, but right now I know limits are bullshit, and physical exercise is as much mental as it is physical. And I know that being able to do burpees and jump-ropes real fast will not necessarily get you laid.

I decided to drop some extra pounds while I was in LA working. Now that I'm headed back to NY I'm happy to say I've lost 20lbs in the past 6 weeks. I think my body is starting to level out so I might have to add some cardio into the mix.

Either way I'm stoked.

At one point I weighed 220 lbs. Now I'm at around 155lbs. Took me a little over a year to do it. Much of it came from lifting, eating healthy and walking a lot. Good stuff.

I wouldn't do any exercize that's painful without clearing it with a doctor. Not much I know of that doesn't strain the core in some way. Not much cardio, anyway. But strength stuff with your arms and isometrics could be alright. Strength and muscle mass are real good for burning fat; more muscles burn more calories. If you're not working out, though, be extra-strict on the diet. Use the time to experiment with healthy foods and finding more healthy shit you like.

Burpee: (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/rossboxing2.htm) It's an old gym class/boxing exercize: do a push-up, jump up in the air like you just don't care, repeat. Here's a hottie almost doing them:

Build your stamina doing exercises related to your sport - and your position. For example, boxers are known not to do bench presses because it doesn't give them the kind of speed strength and endurance strength they need in the ring. They're also doing less "road work" - long, slow runs through the park - as doing such cardio work, at around 60 percent of capacity sustained without breaks has little in common with their sport, which is at near full capacity for three minute rounds with one minute breaks. Top boxers have scrapped jogging for more specific endurance exercises like just working the pads at full intensity for the number of rounds of an upcoming fight.

The reason for the lecture is that a buddy of mine wrote out Randy Coteure's 8x8 endurance routine, which I thought would be a piece of piss because I've already been doing endurance workouts that are pretty much full-body anyway. It turned out to be a killer and I was sore as hell. What I gained from it was that the idea of "all-around" fitness is not as general as I thought it was. Turns out, training with certain exercises are really good at improving your ability to do those specific exercises well, but not as good as I previously thought at doing other, even similar exercises. I'll get up to speed pretty quickly with the new workouts, but it will take some work. I'm also an old fucker with no real reason for being in shape except to not feel so shitty in a few months when I turn 40. But if you're trying to get in shape to be a football lineman, then build your stamina - and drop the excess weight - with exercises designed specifically for your position in your sport.

The Thing is i am not going for strength, what i am trying to do is shed off excess pounds in large amounts and make it so i am not huffing and puffing at the end.

The first thing i did was Long jogs nonstop for about 10 miles and it only took off 5-10 pounds in like 2 weeks, with controlled eating and after the 5-10 pounds shed it just stopped no matter how far i ran. Maybe because i lost the fat in where it was working my legs and its helping nothing else. But the only thing i am trying to lose is pure Abdominal weight and i refuse to do situps or crunches and i can't really find anything more that would actually help.

if you have any advice on shit like that it would really help.

So maximal strength isn't a problem, that's good. That allows you to focus on the other types of strength: strength endurance and/or speed strength, while you're working towards your primary goal of losing the excess weight. [Here's an article that talks about the difference between the different types of strength. (http://www.rosstraining.com/articles/strengthtraining.html)]

You're right not to rely on stomach exercises to lose fat from around your stomach - the two have nothing to do with each other. Your body stores fat where it wants to - generally around the gut on men and hips on women - and it will burn it from where it wants to, not from where you work the muscles. You can't chose from where you lose the fat. Instead, your body will burn the fat for energy when you're doing excercise that requires your muscles to use more calories than your muscles have stored as glycogen, and, more generally, when you're burning more calories than you eat each day. So working your thighs will burn more fat from around your gut than crunches simply because the thigh muscles are bigger and demand more calories. Working your whole body will burn even more of that fat.

Jogging 10 miles is a good way to lose fat. However, the conventional wisdom that low intensity cardio sustained beyond 20 or 30 minutes is the best - or only - way to burn fat is a myth, in my opinion. It works, but it's certainly not the only, and possibly not the best way to burn fat. I've lost a shit-load of fat over the last six months by doing high-intensity burpees and heavy rope for, usually, only 10 to 20 minutes per day. The theory, from my friend who was a kickboxer and fitness nerd here and from sources like Ross Emanait who wrote the article above, is that higher-intensity cardio raises the body's metabolism higher than low-intensity cardio and keeps the metabolism elevated for 36 hours compared to the 12 hours of low-intensity. The last time I was into exercise was when I was running up to 10 miles about 12 years ago and I think these burpees have burned my fat at least as fast as the longer runs.

But the good news is that all this means you can burn the fat you need by doing exercises that build the type of strength you need for football - short bursts of maximum effort broken up by rests between plays. I think you can forget the 10 mile sustained runs, which do little ro replicate what you'll have to do on the field. Instead, you should do shorter, higher intensity workouts and lose just as much fat. In fact, I think you should be doing burpees. Given your size I assume you're a lineman? If so, the reason your coach as you doing burpees, (or "up-downs", but I think burpees is a cooler name), is because they build strength-endurance in your thighs, chest and arms in ways that are similar to exploding off the line and pushing other linemen around. If you've already got enough maximal strength then getting better and better at burpees will give you the endurance to be as fresh in the fourth quarter of a game as you are in the second. (If you ask your coach I'll bet he'll say the same thing.)

The thing I love about burpees is that, while they look retarded and have a stupid-sounding name, the 100 Burpee Challenge (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/rossboxing2.htm) is a great way to motivate yourself through competing with yourself and others for bragging rights. When I started them it took me three tries to be able to do 100 and it took me over 20 minutes to do them. I set a goal of beating a time of twice my roommate's time, (he did them in 5:30 while training for a pro kickboxing match here in Cambodia), and now, six months later I'm 2 minutes and 8 seconds away from his actual time and I'm taunting him that, at almost twice his age, a chain-smoker, and a meaty-breasted zilch when we first moved in together, I'm going to out-burp him within the next couple months. I'd love to tell you how much fat I've lost in the process, but I haven't actually seen a working scale in four years since I left the First World four years ago, but suffice it to say me and my friends are amazed by how much fat I've lost. I also look and feel better than I ever have.

So I reccommend doing 100 burpees at least every other day and try chasing my times. You're a 15 year-old high school football player - I'm a 40 year-old Third World drifter. Certainly you should be able to catch my ass.

For other exercies, think about all-around exercizes that simulate your sport. Ross Training is partially geared for combat sports, but much of the exercises and principles can apply. I think Randy Couture's 8x8 MMA barbell conditioning workout (http://buildingbodies.ca/exercise/index.php/randy-couture-workout-for-mma-conditioning/) would be perfect as well. It's phenomenal for core strength and endurance, and it burns shit-loads of calories. I did it last week and I thought, with all the conditioning stuff I've been doing, it would be a piece of piss, but it killed me. I could only do 5 sets, (with dumbells instead of the bar, as I only work out on my patio), but I'm planning on making it a regular routine starting tomorrow, (I'm still a bit sore from it). MMA in general is turning out to be a great source of re-evaluating fitness principles, especially regarding core strength, conditioning and compound exercizes, (working multiple body parts). Read articles by the pros - you can learn a lot.

And keep one more thing in mind - weightlifting burns fat. Bigger muscles burn more calories, and working muscles more burns more calories. You don't have to do traditional "cardio" exercises like running, cycling or treadmills or machines to burn fat. Burpees, the heavy rope and the dips, pull-ups, clapping push-ups and other strength training exercises I do with my small set of adjustable dumbells have built my muscles even while I've been focussed on burning fat and achieving endurance goals. Learn the difference between the types of strength and find the exercizes that accomplish the fat-loss and strenght-building goals you want at the same time. There's plenty of workouts that target different multiple goals and you can easily find the ones you like doing so its more likely you'll do them even when you don't feel like it, and you'll find it easier to push yourself beyond what you thought was possible.

Hope that helps. Now if you'll excuse me I've got another record to smash on my patio before work.

I'm in shock. The thought occurred to me today to break my rope jumps into sets of 200 instead of 100 and I hit 7:54 - feeling like, next time I could actually go longer between breaks. 7:54 is astonishing to me. My ex-roommate, the kickboxer, did 7:30 when he was training for a fight and suddenly I was less than 30 seconds away from him? Holy fuck! So I sat down and bragged to him in a text message, telling him to repent as the End of Days is surely nigh when my fat-ass, chain-smoking old ass is creeping up on his time. When I sent the message I thought about what I'd do for the rest of my workout and came up with: try again, with even fewer breaks. So here it is:

7:21

REPENT, SINNERS!

Next time I'll break up the burpees into longer sets and I expect will achieve the level of advanced athelete. Fuck me!

So, it's been a month since I've stopped trying to lose weight, but I'm still looking to maintain my weight around the 210 mark.

I've added to my exercise regimen as well. More yoga stretches, doing some light boxing exercises that I'm going to build up slowly. I did 6 minutes of a boxing routine on the Wii and my arms chest and back were hurting. I'm doing 3 minutes every day now, will move up to 6 minutes next week, and then 10 the week after that.

I'm consistently at the 210 mark, and have built up some muscle and have lost some fat. Some days I'm at 212, and some days I'm at 208, depending upon what I ate and drank the day before, etc. Depending upon where I fall within that range, I modify my fat burning exercises, and/or my diet, for that day. For instance, if I'm at 208, I may treat myself to something very fattening that day, and keep up the exercises, or not. If I'm at 212, I need to keep a special eye on my diet for the day/week, and up my fat burning exercises.

Feels great to be able to keep the weight off after hitting a weight goal.

I am a man over 3 bills. I have lost 70 lbs in the past using South Beath concepts, but gained about 75% of that weight back due to a variety of excuses (longer hours at work, school at night, planning a wedding, blah, blah blah). I just got back from Japan, where I ate like a HORSE but managed to lost 7 pounds because I was walking miles and miles every day. Plus it was hot as piss.

I am using that as a springboard to get back to where I need to be. Keep walking, keep eating freshly prepared food. I've got goals in mind for a 2 year plan sort of deal. Hopefully in a few months I have confidence enough in my efforts to share with all of you.

this was on January 18th and it's almost August 18th, so this is around 7 months later. I just weighed in at 184.2 lbs. I actually reached my absurd goal and since i started exercising i've probably lost around 55 lbs. I now think I want to weigh somewhere around 175 lbs. So we'll see how that goes, i'll check back in here in a few months.

so over the last 6 weeks since i picked out my wedding gown, i've lost 10 pounds. i've lost a couple of inches in all the right places. i'm going to attribute this to the fact that i started running again; i've had such more results from adding running instead of just walking. i can also run 2 miles without passing out, and decreased my time from 30 minutes to 24 minutes. i've been exercising consistantly for almost 3 months now which i havent been able to stick with since college. i'm finally feeling/seeing some muscles i havent seen/felt in years. usually i get bored or discouraged after a month or two. i'm so motivated now, between the wedding and the fact that i now work in a health-related field where i really do need to step up and look/feel the part. i'm half way from where i was at my largest to where i set my goal weight. i actually look forward to my long walks and runs and toning in my treatment room. hooray exercise! hooray health!

so over the last 6 weeks since i picked out my wedding gown, i've lost 10 pounds. i've lost a couple of inches in all the right places. i'm going to attribute this to the fact that i started running again; i've had such more results from adding running instead of just walking. i can also run 2 miles without passing out, and decreased my time from 30 minutes to 24 minutes. i've been exercising consistantly for almost 3 months now which i havent been able to stick with since college. i'm finally feeling/seeing some muscles i havent seen/felt in years. usually i get bored or discouraged after a month or two. i'm so motivated now, between the wedding and the fact that i now work in a health-related field where i really do need to step up and look/feel the part. i'm half way from where i was at my largest to where i set my goal weight. i actually look forward to my long walks and runs and toning in my treatment room. hooray exercise! hooray health!

hooray for you, hooray for school!!! congrats on all youve accomplished. reading your paragraph i could totally identify with almost every single word you wrote. you have a lot to be proud of, now keep kicking ass!

2000 ropes = 15:56. That's 2 1/2 minutes off the old time, so maybe I can still shatter some records, but just not every week.

I think what's happening is that, when I plateau I change up my exercises, (I've started running since I last did the ropes), and the benefits of the new exercises and the break from the old exercises translate into increased all-around strength/endurence and better performance in more exercises. In the past, when I hit a plateau I'd get discouraged and give up and eat Funions and chicken wings and grow my mits out for the next 8 years. But now that I've got a ton of exercises I know about and would like to do, when I plateau I find another challenge and I've kept it up. And it's payed off. I'm fucking stoked.

Today the gym scale told me I hit the mark of ten pounds lost since starting my diet! W00t! My chick was fucking happy to see my progress when I went up to see her this last weekend. Thinking about her is pretty much the thing keeping me committed.

I'm down about 15 pounds in 45 days. Plus I'm noticing some muscle gain, so it's even better. Losing weight and adding muscle.

OK, I am finally on a program that's working for me- it's the McDougall (http://www.fatfree.com/diets/mcdougall.html)diet, similar to Eat to Live, which was popular six years ago. I don't believe in diets, I don't I don't I don't, but it's nice to make the kind of progress I'm making.

I'm down 11 pounds in 20 days. I'm running and biking and eating whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruits, and that's it. I am in a weightloss competition with 9 other vegan chicks, and I am going to take their money. I'm gonna!

I've also got the Ipod+system that tracks my pace and distance, and that's pretty fun. My longest run was 9 miles, so far.

Grrr! I'm gonna kill it!

40th Birthday goals accomplished:

100 burpees: goal = under 6 minutes, (absurd goal = under 5:33) - birthday time = 5:48

I'm stoked about that.

Pullups: goal = 30 consecutive - birthday = 33.

I'll see what other records my old ass can break over the next week.

Somehow in a complete whacked state of mind, getting no sleep, and ODing on caffeine before I went to the gym I managed to do sets of 205 on romanian deads and 185 on lunges. Which is 50 lbs more on the deads and 30 more pounds on the lunges than my previous highs a couple of months ago.

I must be doing something right.

I dont get it. I do great during the week. But once the weekend hits, I go into the shitter diet wise. Ok, not so much in the food department but I dont workout. And now with my friends home from school for the next month, I have the feeling its going to get worse. Last time they were here for Thanksgiving, I slacked off and when they left, i had to get back into my routine. Its been 2 days and I already feel out of whack. BAH!!

I know it will sound cheesy, but My goal is to be able to buy and fit into gap jeans. b/c gap is a good store and if I can wear gap jeans, it means something to me. and it irritates me to hell that I let this crap distract me from my goal. :help:

Okay, I'm back to 222 lbs.

For the last 6 months, my children's sleep habits have been killing me. Never getting a full night's sleep, up really early every day, and as a result, I couldn't work out and I ate to feel better, so I gained 12 lbs back.

So my goal is to lose 15 lbs by the end of april. My 15th college reunion is at the end of may, and I need to get back down to that weight for the reunion.

So, I'm keeping an eye on my diet again, and I'm going to be working out 3-4 times a week.

People have a right too their opinions of you or anyone else on the board(s), but taking personal jabs at someone's appearance is the lowest, douchiest moves ever.

And I realize I've called someone fat and ugly here, CHUCKWAGONCOOK so I'm not above being low and douchey. Oh well, I take back the fat and ugly, but the stupid remains. :bye:

Goodluck with everything Friday.

I have 2 rules. Say nothing negative about a female who posts here. And every male poster is a stupid, ugly fat ass.

Good luck Friday. Just say yes everytime you want to say no and its a breeze.
