am too poor to join the gym

its too cold (well not today) to walk or run

I do play basketball once or twice a week

besides sit ups or push ups what other exercises can be done in you own home for cardio

The stairs my friend. I don't know if youre prone to doing laundry or anything like that but it might do good to walk up and down your stairs(at first carrying nothing) for maybe 10 minutes or so.

Then if you feel like it's getting too easy you can start carrying lighter weight stuff and pretty much go at your own pace.

The best part is that you can make it work with a 5 or 20 flight staircase...as long as you don't live in a ranch house.

i think a good way to lose weight from home is to not plan road trips to fast foods places.

Remember the exercises from p.e. class...jumping jacks, squat thrusts, scissor kicks, squats...

A mat would be a good investment, to protect your joints from hard floors.

You can also invest in a "door gym" for chin up and stuff. they're pretty afforable and i think easy to remove as well.

I would love to put a treadmill in our basement however we have a low ceiling down there. I'd have to run in a crouching position - not so good for the back. I was thinking of getting one of those exercise bikes that work the arms also but I'd have to find a home for the air hockey table and Santa just brought that to our house.

Try not to sit down during the day. Just standing burns considerably more calories than sitting. Its not much, but it adds up over a whole day.

And you'll get Pixie coming over to tread on your mill...

I exercise at home alot. I do 5 kinds of crunches, 5 kinds of pushups, some dips, some free weights, a little stretching mixed in, and some kung-fu drills to work the legs. It's about a 30 minute routine I've got worked out that works for me.

Jump rope! And there's always aerobics videos (Tae Bo, Step aerobics, all that girly stuff...). Whatever you do, just don't stop moving, like circuit training.

If its a lack of money that is keeping you away from the gym, check your medical insurance, sometimes it gets you a discount or pick up the whole tab.

If you are looking for something very economical that has many uses, you may wanna consider purchasing an exercise ball.

Link to example here. (http://www.amazon.com/TheraBand-Thera-Band-Exercise-Balls/dp/B0006N8S8C)

I personally use them at the gym for ab work and elevated push-ups. They also force you to build the strength in your core to help your stability.

Maybe you can try and stash a little something here and there. Not money that is her or the both of yours but rather money that would go to like personal luxuries you might buy for yourself?

I'm sure you could possibly find a way to make it work. As it was mentioned before i would also try and hunt down a gym with discounts that might work for you.

personally i got a discount at my gym because my Dad is a veteran. They waved the $200 intro fee and cut down the monthly cost A LOT.

Really don't need them. You can adjust the width of your hands to work the muscles a little differently.

Hand positions help too. Diamond pushups work the muscles differently than dragon pushups, which work the muscles differently than dolphin pushups.

DDR is fun.

PLay during the day if you can. You don't stomp as hard on the home mats as you do like the ones you see at the boardwalk.

theres so much you can do around the house, as was mentioned before, for losing weight you really wanna concentrate on anaerobic exercises more so than weight training. So your best bet is to get outta the house and go for a brisk walk for 30-60 minutes a day, walking around all day doing errands is not the same thing, it has to be continuous, main focus is getting your heart rate up and keeping it there. At home you can do the jumping jacks, etc as someone else said but make sure before you do anything you really stretch out every part of your body.

the old school PE exercises are AWESOME... squats, jumping jacks, squat thrusts, lunges, push ups... done as a circuit .... will work your strength and cardio and endurance all at once.

I will be rejoining the fitness world ... now that i have gained back a ton of weight. Funny how gaining so much back can really help to mess with your psyche ... even when life is good.

Very true but like I say to anyone who asks, just try walking if nothing else. Most people are surprised at their weight loss from just eating a little better and walking 30-45 minutes a day. It's better than doing nothing, plus it motivates you to do more after you see the success from just doing a simple thing like walking.
