June Jones leaving Hawaii. Which seems strange to me, because he has a good thing going in paradise. To go to SMU, stink town. So this brings up the question? How much for you to leave Hawaii while being successful?
He is getting 2 mill a year, and better facilities. They countered with 800K, and a promise of better facilities.
But I feel Hawaii is a valid team now. I would leave too, but for a better job than SMU.

If they threw in 2 tons of Poi, a cursed Tiki idol and the remains of Don Ho I would seriously consider the job.

NOTE TO RICH RODRIGUEZ:
THIS is how you PROPERLY leave your position and go to a new one.
SMU - wasn't that the team that got the death penalty back in the day? Or am I thinking of something else?
Maybe SMU is closer to home for him? Then again, being in Hawaii, anything is closer to home.

That's garbage. You'd leave snowy MA for a tin of Jack Lord's hair pomade and a plate lunch in a second.

Yep. They have like a .333 win percentage since they've been back. Good Luck June...
Why the hell would you leave a job in hawaii for a job in Mississippi?

Even being in paradise, making more than double what your former employer is offering, with better facilities already in place, you gotta take that deal. You could say he took the job as an ego stroke to rebuild a bad program, and even if he fails there, he can still point to his success at Hawaii to get a job somewhere else. Happens all the time.
EDIT: He's from Portland, so Hawaii vs. Dallas is a wash on being "close to home". I think it's the money and an ego thing.
He turned around Hawaii bigtime; maybe he feel he can do the same at SMU, a program that has been awful since getting the death penalty.

SMU is in Dallas.
That being said, they offered him 3x what he was making at Hawaii. You GOTTA take that deal, not just for you, but for your family.

Fuck my family. If they aren't happy in Hawaii they'll never be happy.

What he's done in Hawaii is considered a minor miracle, and the team is bound to start failing at some point. He's only been able to win because he takes chances on good athletes with checkered histories and it's worked out. Eventually he's going to start rolling snake eyes...
Think Hawaii would have any loyalty to him then? Are they going to come through with the "promised" facilities after a 3-9 season? Recruiting is the name of the game, and as nice as Hawaii may be the top recruits are looking towards the NFL. Shitty facilities and a minimum 6 hour flight each way for every road game is not something a top prospect is interested in. Take the 5 years and 10 million guaranteed and get the hell out of Dodge.

Don't forget about Rice! They might be tied with SMU, but at least they have a tradition of mediocrity that has prevented the Death Penalty.

Fuck my family. If they aren't happy in Hawaii they'll never be happy.
For 2 million dollars a year on a ten million dollar contract, you can afford to send them to Hawaii for as long as they want.
Hell, at that kind of money, he can afford to maintain whatever property he has in Hawaii.

I'd stay in Hawaii vs. leaving for SMU. I don't begrudge June for leaving and I'm grateful for what he did for the program. But I love Hawaii and couldn't imagine trading it in for SMU. However, the money, the challenge, and the feeling that he brought Hawaii as far as he could must have factored big-time.
Jones went to 3 different colleges and his coaching career, college and pro, was typically nomadic. It's not a surprise to me that he left, it's more of a surprise that he stayed at UH as long as he did.
What is $2,000,000 in Hawaiian money? Easily 3 mil.
Surprised UH couldn't come up with a better offer than $800,000 though. You can chalk that up to the underwhelming tenure of AD Herman Frazier and his predecessor Hugh Yoshida (alum of my high school). He fucked over Riley Wallace and the Athletic Dept is in such financial trouble that they couldn't even make a competitive offer to keep the greatest coach in program history. That's a pretty good 9 months, firing the program's most successful bball coach and letting the most successful football coach walk.

Guess June Jones will miss those SPAM burgers with pinapples on top.
Maybe they can get Mouse Davis.

I think from your post that you might be from Hawaii. If that's true (if) then why did you leave?
I think Jones did the right thing. He gave it every chance, and doesn't everybody deserve to make as much money as they can for what they do, provided that they don't skip out on people?

I happen to agree with you, as I'm sure you gathered from my post. I just would not have made the same choice. Personal preference, and perhaps if I was in June Jones' position, I would place different values on the pros and cons of leaving vs. staying. I believe that the people in Hawaii are also grateful for what Jones did for the program, school, and state. Any anger they have will be (rightfully) directed at the AD.
I lived in Hawaii twice growing up (total of 5 years), the last time during the tenure of the previous coach, the immortal Fred von Appen. Anyone who went to games back then, and I went to more than I would care to admit, could be nothing but thrilled for what June Jones did during his tenure. He earned the right to make whatever choice he wanted.
Fact is, the local community hasn't always given the program the highest level of support. Even in the relative good times from 1999-2006, crowds of 35,000 were much more common than 50,000 sellouts, despite it being the only game in town.
EDIT: Jones made what he felt was the right choice for him. I can't argue with that. However, the right choice could be the opposite for different people.

June Jones did all he could ever do at Hawaii.
He was blessed with a very good QB who fell into his hands due to some bizarre events.
He'd probably never get another talent like him again. Sure Tonny Chnag was good but not nearly as good as Brennan.
Hawaii's a transition program. It get's trouble makers and kids who can't go elsewhere.
The program would never be able to offer the things that any other college job ( unless Alaska has a team ) could offer.
Sure SMU's a shitty program and probably not gonna be any better than Hawaii but at least he'll have a shot at better recruits.
If he can make an impact in 5 years at SMU he'd be considered a much better candidate for a major college job.
What he did is the equivalent of a kid, with a chance at playing in the NFL, winning a Heisman and a nat'l title in their junior year.
There's nothing else left to do so you have to take the next step.
Unless you're Matt Leinart of course.
