O k, so my new years resolution is to lay off the soda. I grew up in north carolina and love sweet tea. I really would like to start brewing tea. Anyone have a recipe? I would rather use fake sugar.

I might do the same thing.
I went to school in the south and love tea.
I was thinking of getting one of those tea urn things they have in restaurants.
The bags that make the large quantities of tea can't be that expensive and can probably be purchased from a restaurant supply company.
However you sweeten it would be up to you.
I'll just use good ole regular sugar.

I can't imagine using fake sugar!!! Anyway. I use 6 bags like the instructions say, and I think I use a little less than 2/3 cup of sugar. I think that's the amount. I haven't made it in a few years, but everyone always loved our tea. BTW... Iced tea must always be in a glass that's jam packed full of ice.

Growing up in California I never had sweet tea till I went to the South for the first time last year. That shit is amazing.
Just have some shipped in from the Waffle House or Bojangles, then send it my way.
Toss in some cheesy grits while you're at it.

Sweet Tea is made by adding the sweetner while the tea is still hot. during the brewing process. Not the same as adding sugar to iced tea.

Sweet Tea rules and the tea must be hot when you add the sweetener.

Just brew unsweet and add a little Sweet-N-Low-- I find it the most agreeable sweetener when it comes to ice tea. Sometimes I half the Sweet-N-Low with Splenda, but never Splenda all the way because it blows. No equal because I already drink enough Diet Cokes and the aspartame has already started eroding my brain. I am either very passionate about this subject or I am just stoned.

This won't help you at all, but Arizona has a Sweet Tea that they've released all over the place here in the Northeast, and it makes me so fucking happy to have nearly real Sweet Tea with my meals.

I remember when I was crashing with a girl who was from Michigan. I made some sweet iced tea for us. She took a sip and spit it out all over the place. "What the fuck is in this tea?" I told her nothing. Just the the usual amount of sugar. "Who the hell puts sugar in iced tea?" She was as dumbfounded as I was when I heard that there were people who DIDN'T sweeten their tea. She came around in the end. (about the tea, that is)

If you can find any Sweet Leaf Tea (http://www.sweetleaftea.com/) or Red Diamond (http://www.reddiamond.com/) sweet tea up there, you might want to pick some up. Bee's knees, delish and all that.

1-ounce loose black tea
1 quart hot water
1 quart room temperature water
Simple Syrup:
5 cups sugar
3 cups cold water
Infuse loose tea into hot water for 4 to 5 minutes. Strain tea into room temperature water. Sweeten with simple syrup if desired.
For simple syrup, in a small non-reactive pot combine 5 cups of sugar and 3 cups of cold water. Slowly bring to a boil and add 6 sliced lemons and a few sprigs of fresh mint. Remove from heat. Allow to cool 10 minutes and strain.

I think just for this recipe so you're infusing the lemon and mint flavor in to the tea through the syrup.

Simple Syrup doesn't have anything but sugar and water.
You can flavor it with mint and lemon if that's what floats your boat; nothing wrong with that.
Click here for a recipe for plain old ordinary simple syrup from Food Network. (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_31207,00.html)
I like iced herbal teas from Celestial Seasonings.
Unsweetened.
(I know, heinous sacrilege for all of you sweet'ea drinkers out there. But I just don't like things super-sweet.)

Wow.. Do you use insulin after?? Because you are surly going to become a diabetic drinking this stuff...
This sounds like the dumbest idea ever for some reason.. Might as well keep drinking soda... This can't be healthy... I say that because the person is giving up soda for health reason as his resolution..

Real good southern sweet tea isn't going to be good for you. If giving up Soda because of Sugar is your thing, then Sweet Tea certainly isn't the answer. If you're giving up Soda because you don't like chemicals in your beverage, and you don't care about sugar ... then this is a good recipe. Sorry i didn't add that disclaimer.

I am not saying it might not taste good.. I am just saying with all of that sugar and ingredients.. It just sounds really unhealthy.. I could be wrong..

I'll make this as simple as possible.
15 dollar coffeepot, 7 tea bags in the filter area, brew full pot, pour hot tea into a gallon pitcher containing 1 cup of sugar. Fill to top with water. Fridge. Goodness.

I'll make it even simpler:
Handful of teabags in a pitcher of cold water in the fridge. Come back the next day with a glass of ice. Done.

You're right. Plus, tea (even with sugar) has it's own health benefits. The antioxidants are pretty high in tea.

I'm not sure about how high they are in black tea. The lesser fermented teas such as green and white are usually the ones purported to have the high levels of antioxidants.

follow it up with some banana pudding and a walk around the farm
Show him the view from McGee Town Hill

I know since being in the south I have started to make my own tea, both of the sweet and iced varieties. While I do enjoy them both, it seems that Hot Tea + Sugar is the best formula for sweet tea. I don't use lime or lemon in sweet tea. However in iced tea, all rules are off and I use lemons and limes like they go out of style.
1 Gallon Hot water
5-10 tea bags
2 Cups Sugar (Variable based on desired Sweetness)
Thats all it takes for me to make it. Nothin' fancy.
