I have to stay until the waiter/waitress sees the tip he or she got. Does this make me a bad person
My wife hates that I do this.

yea thats pretty fuckin weird, bro. Just leave the cash. If you are really THAT concerned with making sure they know, put it on a credit card so they have to see you write it in. That way you dont seem so creepy

I hear ya, but I still get a young kid vibe who probably wont tip well from the servers, I want them to know I tip like a pro and to treat me that way

its not like money walks off a table or they forgot who was sitting there. Part of this means you dont totally tip well to be a nice guy. Part of it is also so you can feel like a nice guy or better then people. I dont mean that as like an attack, i think everyone has that to a point. This is just one of your ways it is there. Could be alot worse, I guess

Problem is by the time it gets to the tip, they've already treated you however they're gonna treat you. The best you can do is make them feel like a douche for thinking you weren't gonna tip well. Which I LOVE to do.
I hardly ever get served by the same waiter/waitress, even when I go to the same place.

I was just getting ready to post that I wich we could tip at the beginning to make sure you get good service. Would you be uncomfortable with that?
I don't know that I could pull that off. There is a touch of arrogance to it.

I kinda look like a kid and i dont ever get that feeling. Aside from a mistake being made, which happens, I can't remember ever getting what I'd call bad service

I have never done it either. This guy is a big friendly goof, so he gets away with it.

i think it depends on where you are. If you were at Chili's, tipping up front would seem weird. But if you walk into a really nice place, I don't see why throwin the guy a 20 off the bat would ever be a bad thing.

thats a good point. i hardly ever eat in NYC. And if I do, its usually a special occasion so its at a fancier place that usually some older family member has set up. In Jersey, the people who serve and things in restaurants seem more pleasant, but also arent nearly as busy at most places

Maybe if I start eating somewhere besides Chili's we can have this conversation.

fuck that. i base my extremely generous tips on their overall performance. the key to being a good waitress/waiter is making sure the table has whatever it needs. filled drinks, napkins, condiments. AND ASK ME IF EVERYTHING IS OK OR IF I NEED ANYTHING. THIS IS IMPORTANT, FOOD PEOPLEZZZZ!!!!! you dont ask me...you dont get good tip.
I always tip well (usually around 25%) and never wait around.
I'm incredibly classy.

Being that I used to chef and will eventually get back into it, I always leave a standard 25%. Waitresses make dick and put up with a lot. If they were average they get no more, suck maybe I scale back. If they went above and beyond I will bump it accordingly
And yes, it makes you a huge creep for waiting to see how they react

well the theory behind leaving a tip and waiting so you see the waitress/waiter recieve it is because quite a few times I have seen other patrons and busboys pocket the cash as it sits there. Now thats madness.
Usually what i will do is when i get my change back or give them my card, I will give them their tip right then and there. No waiting and you know it is going to the person you want it given to.
And on rare occasions, I've received service so bad I refused to leave a tip.

While i understand many if not most places do pool tips, having other patrons cherry pick what you left for the waitress is very beat.
