. The first scheduled off date for the series will be in March during the Easter holiday. Following the race in Martinsville, the series makes another swing to the southwest, racing at Texas and Phoenix in early April.

The second scheduled off weekend occurs in mid-April. The series then picks back up with races at Talladega, Richmond and Darlington prior to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

"By running five consecutive points events before the first scheduled break in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the 2008 schedule is designed to be even more fan friendly," said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France.

Another adjustment to the 2008 schedule is that the Chicago race will be run Saturday night. "Night racing provides an additional element of intrigue and excitement," said France. "Running under the lights at Chicagoland on a Saturday night will be even more exciting for the fans in the stands as well as those watching from home."

I am very much looking forward to the upcoming season. I am very curious to see how well or poorly Dale Jr is going to do with Hendrick. It's probably what everyone will be interested in for a while.

I have missed my racing on the weekends, can't wait until it comes back again.

You never know what will happen. Tony Stewart did well last season. I am scared of him every year so we'll see.

I hope Kasy Kahne gets his act together as well as Harvick and Hamlin. I am hoping lots of guys do well to make it more exciting.

I am hoping to either go to a pocono race or dover this year. I have yet to be able to go to a race.

Nice job on the opening post there, Jake. (Don't forget to wave to us from your seat at Daytona!)

I'll be hoping that Casey Mears will wake up the sleeping tiger and get some wins in the 5! (not that kyle didn't do a good job last year- but I think that he had a simmilar set up to the 24 and 48 than Casey had with the 25.) I know it sounds nuts to keep pulling for the 5, no matter who's in it, but lets just say it's a Terry Labonte thing. It's tough when your driver "retires" by fading away with half season schedules and road course races. He should have quit after his win at the last (ever) southern 500 at Darlington. Time for new blood and some wins!

and if my driver can't win... I'll be cheering for:
24 for Buzzard
48 for Amy
20 for Tenbats
25...(that's gonna be a tough one). for the "sheep" on rf.net.
Who else???

You guys and all other fans are welcome to join the big NASCAR Pool/Fanatasy at http://www.Oaklandfantasyracing.com. It's only $25 for the year and it's a ton of fun. A buddy from my hockey team runs it and people from all over the country (about 200 or more) play every year. I finished 8th last year and got a free spot for 2008 because of it. All you do is pick a racer each week and get the exact points they earn. And of course you can't pick anyone twice.

I really think PB, Matty and Amy would like it a lot. Go check the site out for fun and see what you think.

Too bad about the one time pick thing. Otherwise, you go with Robby "the other Gordon" Gordon with a DNF's worth of points every week! I'll check it out. Anyone else ever do one of these fantasy racing things?http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/sports/checkeredflag.gif

Preseason Thunder begins TODAY at Daytona International Speedway. SPEED will be showing the recaps each day at 7:00pm and 6:30pm on some days....its enough to get your fix till Speedweeks begins.

www.Speedtv.com has the schedule....

also...those that love racing in general might want to check out the Chili Bowl. Hacky name, but its one hell of a race and has a ton of NASCAR's top stars going back to doing the dirt.

LAS VEGAS – When he first got word that all references to him had been removed from the headquarters of Dale Earnhardt Inc., Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fine with it. But after stewing over it for a bit, he's not.

"I got to thinking about it, and it sort of hurt my feelings," Earnhardt Jr. said at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where preseason testing resumed Monday. "It's sort of a – even the guys that are still there that worked on that car, to not see the accolades, any sort of appreciation for the work they did, that they're still there. And the Tony Jr.'s, the guys that aren't there anymore that had something to do with the Daytona 500 win; that had something to do with the Busch Series championships and stuff.

"But I ain't going to spend any more time on it, because there's just better things to worry about and occupy your time with."

Toyota walking the walk

Full Article (http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news;_ylt=AqRuG4qWmmatx9Zd8lf4_Ojov7YF?slug=jh-vegastest012808&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)

LAS VEGAS – Any notion that Toyota was just spewing the company line two weeks ago at Daytona when they said they'd not only be competitive, but win multiple Sprint Cup races in 2008 was put to rest Monday.

They weren't.

Denny Hamlin, driving a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, provided the proof when he clocked the fastest lap in the first test session at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Teammate Kyle Busch was fastest in the afternoon session.

Sure, Busch did the same thing at Daytona. But what makes this effort so notable is that they did it on a 1.5-mile oval – the kind of track that comprises one-third of the Sprint Cup schedule.

"We definitely didn't think going into this year we would have growing pains about switching manufacturers," Hamlin said. "Had we had the old car where we really don't know the aero advantages, yeah, we definitely would have been a little bit more concerned. But we know we basically have the same body as we had last year. All we're dealing with is different horsepower."

In other words, with NASCAR strictly running the Car of Tomorrow this season, the transition Joe Gibbs Racing is making from Chevrolet to Toyota is really no different than what every other team in the garage is dealing with.

I just got my membership to TrackPass PitCommand, I had the RaceView last year but had way too many problems with it. I never had a problem with the PitCommand so that is what I am going to be using from now on. :) Plus I like all the features better than what they had on RaceView

Who else???
Roll call for the favorite drivers of board members for this season. Just to establish a list for appropriate congrats and ball busting.

I really want to go to the Spring Race at PIR, but I'll settle for the November race. It just seems that the last two races in the chase are always anti-climatic.

I've been to Dover, but the only races I want to see live are either Talladega, Daytona, Bristol, or Lowe's. I have no interest in any other track besides PIR to see "live".

I've been to both and I like Richmond better. Also went to Martinsville, another nice short track. I stayed in South Boston for the Martinsville trip and got to check out a saturday night race at the local speedway where the Burtons grew up. Very cool and very real racing on those little short tracks. (I think it was hooters cup series...Jackaroo series?)

Reason for TMS billboard switch: unhappy Earnhardts

By STEPHEN HAWKINS, AP Sports Writer

January 31, 2008

AP - Jan 31, 5:49 pm EST
More Photos

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Reason No. 1 for Texas Motor Speedway to replace billboards: unhappy Earnhardts.

Four identical billboards referring to the strained relationship between Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his stepmother, Teresa, will be replaced within the next two weeks. The flap is over ads featuring a picture of the driver and the wording ``Reason #88: Step-Mom.''

TMS president Eddie Gossage said Thursday night that the billboards, part of a series of similar ads to promote the NASCAR Sprint Cup weekend at the track in April, will be changed after a request from Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, the driver's sister and business manager.

``The first thing I told her when I answered the phone was if you guys are uncomfortable with it, all you have to do is say the word,'' Gossage said. ``We had a very pleasant talk.''

No. 88 is a reference to Earnhardt's new car number with Hendrick Motorsports, the team he went to after last season when he decided to leave Dale Earnhardt Inc., his late father's company that is run by Teresa Earnhardt. He left DEI after months of contentious negotiations with his stepmother.

Earnhardt will still be displayed on the billboards, but the wording will change to ``Reason #88: New Car Smell.''

Gossage said Elledge thought the new slogan ``was cool, and Dale Jr. loved it.''

There are billboards with catchy slogans featuring the car numbers of three other drivers.

One features a wide-eyed, grinning Tony Stewart with ``Reason #20: Road Rage!'' Then there is one for Jeff Gordon with ``Reason #24: 81 Cup Wins. Zip At Texas!'', and one for two-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, ``Reason #48: Twice As Good As 24!''

After getting the call from Elledge, Gossage decided to make sure Stewart was all right with the No. 20 ad.

``I e-mailed Tony, `What do you think?' He thought they were hilarious,'' Gossage said.

Gossage said he didn't follow up with Gordon and Johnson, Earnhardt's new teammates with Hendrick, because the TMS president considers those slogans ``benign'' despite one small glitch. Johnson's slogan ``Twice As Good As 24!'' was supposed to end with a question mark, not an exclamation point.

Elledge told Gossage that she and her brother still have friends and family at DEI and want to see the company succeed, but that they were ``excited about Hendrick Motorsports'' and saw no reason to point to past issues.

``We were trying to be edgy,'' Gossage said. ``If this went over the line, in their opinion, we don't want to.''

There are 15 billboards, three featuring Johnson and four for each of the other drivers, displayed on Interstates and busy highways throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Gossage said there will be similar-themed broadcast and print ads in the coming weeks.

Oh and shouldn't this thread be a sticky?

You guys and all other fans are welcome to join the big NASCAR Pool/Fanatasy at http://www.Oaklandfantasyracing.com. It's only $25 for the year and it's a ton of fun. A buddy from my hockey team runs it and people from all over the country (about 200 or more) play every year. I finished 8th last year and got a free spot for 2008 because of it. All you do is pick a racer each week and get the exact points they earn. And of course you can't pick anyone twice.

Go check the site out for fun and see what you think. Once it gets closer to the season you'll be able to see the whole site. If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me.

* I hope you don't mind me posting this here CJ, but I thought you would be one of the guys with a lot of interest as well.

Also, might I suggest we all use some part of our screen names for our team name (on both sites/leagues) so we know who is who. I always hate not knowing who I'm crushing!

Site is up and running. Sign up and pay early as there are extra contests via the speed week and more. Here's the site and extras. Any issues hit me up via pm as I know the guy personally that runs it. Last year we had over 200 in the pool, this year is already up to about 100 and he's hoping for about 300 total. Attached below is the sign up email old players got.

Paint scheme is different. Instead of Budweiser in script across the front, it's the Bud bowtie. Ironic, a bowtie being on a Dodge, no?

Also, the red is more muted than Jr's bright red scheme. It's more dark.

Kasey's firesuit also has "Bud" instead of "Budweiser".

So, the scheme IS different.

I'll get a picture of my huge stand up in my old room at my parents house of AWESOME Bill Elliott and Junior Johnson standing next to the #11 Budweiser Ford Thunderbird. Thats why I'm so excited about Kasey having the Budweiser sponsorship...I can finally pull for it again.

I've been a NASCAR fan since 1990 when Bill drove the Coors #9, so I've been in this for a LOOOONG time, and I'm only 25.

But as far as nostaliga goes, at the Atlanta Motor Speedway just not so long ago, I paid 25 bucks for a seat in the Weaver Section on the backstretch. Now its been torn down after the tornados passed through for RV parking that cost 3000 bucks a spot, 6000 for both races. Cheapest seats not are the Elliott section in turns 3 and 4 for 95 bucks......but I've gotten tickets to the past 3 races for free anyways, so I've spent minimal money anyways. :king:

Daytona 500 Qualifying Top 10

1 Jimmie Johnson - Two time former champion. Lacks any sort of personality whatsoever, except a distinct, deep-rooted need to find out how people cook soup.

2 Michael Waltrip - Two time former Daytona champ. Lacks any sort of driving ability whatsoever, except a distinct deep-rooted similarity to Jim Varney.

3 Joe Nemechek - Uh... got nothing.

4 David Reutimann - Waltrip's protege, which is not saying much.

5 Dave Blaney ... got nothing.

6 Casey Mears - Now the Jan Brady of Hendrick motor sports.

7 Travis Kvapil - Former Truck series competitor, but hasn't had a lot of success in Nextel/Sprint cup.

8 Denny Hamlin - The Wonderboy. Drives for Gibbs, and his driving style (and personality) is somewhat reflective of Smoke. Can be hotheaded. Has a funny series of FedEx commercials.

9 Boris Said - Road course specialist, now with a full-time 7-11 ride. Has a fanbase known as "Saidheads" (which I'm one of). I've also constantly said that the man is the lead singer of System of a Down in disguise.

10 Jeff Gordon[/QUOTE]

This is from wikipedia about the Bud Shootout

The Budweiser Shootout is an annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series exhibition event held at Daytona International Speedway in February, the weekend before the Daytona 500. It began as the 'Busch Clash' and was a fifty-mile "all-out sprint". In its current format, it is made up of two segments: a short 20-lap segment, followed by a ten-minute intermission. After the intermission, the race concludes with a 50-lap segment in which each car may need to make a pit stop for fuel. The race, like the Sprint All-Star Race held at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May, carries no points for the winner but rather a large purse, circumstances which are supposed to encourage an all-out driving style not seen in regular-season races, where one serious mistake can largely ruin a season. However, due to the smaller fields, huge accidents normally seen in the Daytona 500 are uncommon. The smaller, invitation-only field consists of all of the pole position winners from the previous season as well as former event winners. The starting lineup is determined by a random draw, not by qualifying as all other races are determined.

Budweiser will discontinue sponsorship of the NASCAR pole award after the 2007 season, and be replaced by Coors. The 2008 Budweiser Shootout will be held as scheduled, but may be the last running. The contract with Coors did not include any announcements for future runnings of the race.

The parade of sponsors for NASCAR in the past 3 seasons has my head spinning. It used to be you saw a driver with a sponsor, and you would support your driver by buying the sponsor's products-oil, laundry detergent, beer, whatever. Now the names of the series are changing every year. Winston Cup to Nextel Cup to Sprint Cup in 4 seasons. Busch Series now the Nationwide Series and the Craftsman Truck Series is being sponsored next year by "to be announced"

I would reconsider Mears, snoogs, the Hendrick engines all blew out today.

"Just when it appeared it would be smooth sailing for Hendrick Motorsports at this year's Daytona 500, some of that optimism went up in a puff of smoke during Wednesday's practice session.

Nearly every car using Hendrick engines experienced failure in the final practice session before Thursday's Gatorade Duel at Daytona qualifying races.

The issue appears to be a bad batch of lifters - which failed in practice - forcing all four Hendrick cars driven by Daytona 500 pole winner Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Budweiser Shootout winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Casey Mears.

Also, the No. 66 Chevrolet driven by Scott Riggs switched engines because that team uses its engines as part of a lease arrangement with HMS Engines.

Because those cars had to change engines, it affects the starting positions in Thursday's two 150-mile qualifying races, but it will not affect Johnson's pole position for the Daytona 500.

The teams that changed engines will have to start in the rear of the field in each of the respective duels. "

thanks for the tip, Amy. Ill go take a look at that race now. Esp since I only took mears for how fast he ran in qualifying with an engine he doesnt have.

Ive been going over this for the 500. I have Gordon for now. I definately don't wanna take Jr, cause he has almost started too hot for him to win this too. Plus I can save him for later in the year at Talledaga or something.

I'm leading toward Gordon but also thinkin Stewart and JJ. Any advice?

I think the Toyotas should be the ones in front of the Senate and not clemens, obviously they have been taking some sort of performance enhancing drug

No shit! What a difference an offseason makes. Today's Nationwide race was all about the Toyotas.

Only one Chevrolet in the top 10 at the end of the race-and it was my boy Dale in third.

GO NAVY!!! Even though I'm Army.

if you're talking about the yahoo league

jr. is in the b level of drivers so you could pick him and not worry about picking him over the other 3

as for gordon, jj, and stewart i'd go stewart, although he won todays busch er whatever the hellits called now race

ehh its the nationwide series

well if its spoons league then i guess you can go 2 ways

pick a big name driver and hope he does well to start the season off right

or

pick a lesser known guy hope he does well and save the big names for the end

i think its more than likely that jr, jj, gordon, and stewart barring any major problems over the course of the year, will be around for the chase so i'd save them for that

My Fantasy drivers are....A...Jimmy Johnson B..... Junior and Kyle.....C Micheal Waltrip..So far so good ??? I wish Tenbats would have gotten in to our league...Its not to late...I hope John Andretti does ok and just stays out of trouble....It was very interesting during the Speed pre-race show Kenny Wallace and Jimmy Spencer said... They knew for a fact that after the twin races.....Nascar said the Toyota's had up to 25 more Hp to the wheels than the rest of the manufactures ..Boy what one year can do...Joe Gibbs knew what he was doing......I hope they can hold up for 500 miles......Ps I wish i could see a race in HD this year....I have a pretty good 37 Toshiba but no HD...

good thing is now, I can purchase my race tickets to Atlanta for 12 bucks a pop in the Winners Section in turn 1.

these tickets run 100 dollars a pop.

WOW! Mopar in Victory Lane at Daytona....in victory lane at all is a miracle. Gotta give Newman a big thumbs up for that one, he hates plate races, and to hold off Tony, Dale and Kyle and win the big one. Good guys do finish first.

And here's a thought: I'd hate to be the bookie who took the bet against Ryan, I wonder what the odds were?

Another AWESOME Daytona 500! This is going to be the best season EVER!!!

With gordon and Johnson out of the race, and junior back in the pack, I thought that Casey had a chance for Hendrick. Then Rick Hendrick hit the remote control to Casey's brain for self distruct and he cut off Stewart for the high line. Idiot! I'm still rooting for the 5.

Speaking of remote controls, did you see the Toyota commercial with the kids controlling the stock cars? Hilarious.

NASCAR has better commercials then the Superbowl nowadays.

I disagree, I thought it was great. Pit strategy, the shuffling of cars, going 4 wide, it was non-stop action. I thought it was awesome. The cautions do nothing but waste laps.

I sure don't want this buzz I'm feeling from Daytona to go away. Anyone have a favorite already to win or do well at California Speedway? Matt won it last year in a Ford, but JG had the pole. I'm betting the Toyotas are going to kick ass this year out there. They've done a lot of testing on that track.

this is what sets myself apart from the fans of today. I've been watching since 1992, so that type of racing today appealed to me. They had to DRIVE those cars....there was no "just hold it down and turn the wheel". This car is gonna prove throughout the year that its gonna showcase the actual "Drivers"....not just the superstars.

That was the most "throwback-ish" style race that I've seen in quite some time......
sure....the middle was hum-drum, but thats all apart of it. They have to be there at the end to have that exciting 50 lap sprint to the end.

I'm more of the "let them race" kinda fan....crashes never appealed to me. If I wanna see a crash, I'll go to a demo derby.

I had a great time today at the colorado cafe. There had to be about 150 fans there for the party. They gave away all kinds of racing stuff. I even saw some guy walk off with an actual Jasper Engines hood. We left with a bunch of tshirts and hats and a cooler.
I kept looking at that stupid mechanical bull that ESD was riding for Silera's birthday. The only mistake that I made was stopping on rt.22 at white castle's. That's probably the reason that I'm back out of bed right now. Ugh. The agida.
