I been checking the weather out in Cali, it's wet. Too bad Fox has the first set of races when the weather is always bad, it should be ESPN calling the races that get washed out.

If you look at the hood of Dale Jr.'s Nationwide car, it has the National Guard logo on it, and below the logo has the unit crest and name of a National Guard combat unit. Way to go Dale!

And don't forget to root for Shane Huffman in the squiddie Navy car. GO SHANE!

It's 11:45 at night East Coast....you were saying?

This is why I hate having the second race in California. It just sets up the first 4 or 5 weeks for rain delays and cautions that shouldn't have happened.

The only thing to do now is to shut it all down and turn off the tv, make sure your cable box is on another channel so the Nielson ratings will show the sponsors that the race was restarted and watched by nobody.

NASCAR really fucks the TV viewers every time they have a rain delay.

It's time the sponsors figured that out, and have NASCAR have a race or postpone it. This shit is just ridiculous.

Brad Kesowloski in the Navy car, Scottinnj.

I knew this was gonna happen....the most recent time I can remember that NASCAR took this long to dry a track cause they HAD to get the race in was at Charlotte. I think it was 1998 or so, they finished the race at about 3 or 4am with Jeffy Poo being the winner.

but I was 14 or 15 and it was during the summer break of school....so of course it was easy to stay up and watch.

Honestly, I don't blame NASCAR for trying to get this this race in. They have so much travel time involved now and because of that dumb schedule that NASCAR has set in place, it paints them into a box that they can not get out of until the next season.

I just feel bad for the Hauler drivers....THEY have more driving ahead of them than the actual drivers do.

The Labor Day Weekend race may be moved to Hotlanta... (http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news?slug=txlasvegasnotebook&prov=st&type=lgns)

The plan would swap California’s Labor Day weekend date to Atlanta, with the current late October race date for Atlanta going to California.
That would provide a chance to have a Labor Day weekend race in the South and would give California a better time of the year for its second date.

I hope they do this. Not that Atlanta is usually very cold in October, but it would still make more sense to have the October race be in California instead.

Technically it was, because of the bottleneck he caused, but Gordon had already passed him and was caught up in Kenseth's check up which caused Matt to go up the track come back down and collect Jeff.

You talking about the loose oil pan cover on Carl Edwards' car?

50 points, 10 grand and crew chief on "probation" for 6 races. In my opinion. I haven't checked the NASCAR website yet today, so I may be just blowing smoke out my ass.

Probably not even that much, they got 6 Nationwide cars last week for that and charged 25 driver and 25 car owner points.

They did say however, that the Nationwide cars had "loose" covers and Carl's cover was off. Don't really know what that means or what the advantage would be.

What got me mad was the lack of ambulance to Tony's wreck Sunday, and then walking him off the track with an obvious back injury. He was complaining about being light headed and had a "tingly" sensation in his legs on impact. That should have been an automatic trip to the MRI exam room.

I don't see any advantage either. It could be just NASCAR is concerned about the covers being loose and causing an accident or just debris being on the track that could be avoided.

And NASCAR can't even say it was an "advantage" they found over the other COT cars:

President Geoff Smith issued a statement Wednesday explaining what happened: "The bolt holding the lid in place failed in its purpose as a result of vibration harmonics generated by the car and the racetrack during the race. The bolt was secure enough to survive 225 miles of practice, perhaps up to 399 of 400 miles of the race and the scrutiny of numerous inspections."

And NASCAR admitted Edwards did not fail inspection.

So why penalize Edwards and the team for an alleged offense that was not malicious nor provided a significant amount of competitive advantage?

How can it? The oil reservoir is behind the drivers' seat inside the car. If anything, it was a safety hazard for Edwards and I'm confident the experts at Roush would not put their flagship driver in harm's way.

NASCAR's shoot now, ask questions later mentality has to be taken to task, much like Robby Gordon did this week. He gleaned a small victory by way of points returned after the driver appealed NASCAR's blanket penal tactics for an improper nose delivered from the manufacturer on his car in Daytona.

An engineer for Toyota said that the missing cover can add some downforce, which is useful on a track like CAlifornia.

He went as far as to say Roush Racing knew it would create a competitive advantage, which is fancy Toyota-speak for "cheater" I disagree, but Roush had his say over Lee White's comments.

Like I said before, I'm no Edwards fan, but for the infraction, the penalty seems harsh.

Roush fires off at critics, denies intent of cheating (http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/headlines/cup/03/07/cedwards.jroush.penalty.reaction/index.html)

In the long run, it's Edwards, it's a Ford, and it's not my team. So I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

I'm absolutely happy that I didn't get race tickets this year....I usually go to Atlanta every year, but I've been a defender of the COT since the idea was concieved. I must say that this has to be the worst Atlanta race I've seen in many many many years.....Goodyear flat out FUCKED this race up.

Its time for NASCAR to get other tire makes in the game and make this shit interesting again. I'm so sick of hearing Toyota Stewart cry about these shit tires.....even though he makes a 100000% point. This tire with this car isn't ready for racing on big tracks, and today proved it to me......California and Las Vegas wasn't terrible races, but they were entertaining. my initial reaction was "oh my god he is so getting fined for this." not only did he say goodyear sucks but he rattled off names of other companies.

That was my thoughts exactly....Believe me GoodYear and Firestone HATE each other....Its a Indy thing.....Good point Amy.......He Might as well said the f word as far as Goodyear goes...Oh wait he did....

I hope Smoke isn't fined. I don't agree with him, I think we have a ways to go to get the new car down to a science. Everyone struggled with the handling, even Kyle although he was so dominant.
Chad Knaus made a point of the lack of downforce the new cars are having problems with, and since the car has more safety equipment in it, it is now heavier. Since it is heavier, the tires have to be harder, combine that with the lack of downforce, the handling is going to be harder to get into check. When the tires were new, the first few laps of cars that had good handling seemed to be going well, here and at Las Vegas. It's just that the tire is harder, so it wears easier and it's handling goes away faster then the old tire did.
I'm thinking Steve Letarte found out the hard way at California that the shock and spring packages have to be rethought and retooled. Bump stops have to be relocated, and springs have to be softer with more empahsis on spring rubbers to compensate for faster tire wear.
Goodyear is still working on it, and hopefully everyone is going to figure out a way to get the handling under control.

Bristol is coming, so this issue will certainly not go away. I expect to see a lot of sponsor logos get embedded into the wall there, and a lot of tempers flaring after the race.

What was Jr. docked when he said shit on the air? I'm pretty sure it was -25 points and 25 grand.

If they dock him anymore than 25/25, it's fucking ludicrous. If they even THINK about tagging him for 100/100, I'll lose my mind.

Scott..You have watched a lot of racing....Have you EVER seen cars look like they were on dirt @ 180mph....And last week....4 cars Hit the wall at 180+ Because of tire failure..Believe me these drivers don't want to bash Goodyear..BUT..Its there lives we are talking about..... and Goodyear has no competition to compete with....TONY SPOKE UP And is True as Usual ....:bye:

Oh I'm not totally disagreeing with him, I'm just not sure it's the tire itself, and not the tire along with a couple of other factors. I just want the finger pointing to quiet down fast so the problem can be fixed.

Last week, were they tire failures, all of them or were some of them cut tires? I know I didn't like the accident Smoke was in, I was really mad at the response crew, and I was REALLY pissed at the hit Jeff G. took.

I have the race DVR'ed I'll take another look at it and concentrate on those hits on the walls.

I can't disagree with you at all on the handling. It was atrocious. Even with Dale and Kyle lapping everyone DW was complaining that they were slower then usual.

But I hope Tony doesn't get fined for what he said. The drivers do need to feel free to speak their minds, that's the only way problems are going to get fixed.

I don't even think he cursed or said foul language or anything at all close to an FCC violation. On the flip side, you should have heard Dale's pottymouth on the radio with Tony Eury.

Dale: Blankety Blank Blank Fucking tires!
Tony Eury: 10-4

I remember the fine Dale got, but what I meant was what Tony was saying yesterday after the race. Tony didn't curse or say anything that had to be bleeped on Fox. That's why I'm with you on the "no penalty" thing, Tony should not be fined for what he said about Goodyear yesterday.

i know you mean the other Scott.....but I have seen plenty of OLD races where they were going 180plus sideways, they were called Bias Plyed tires. I remember an old race at Dover on ESPNclassic, those guys were sideways, smoking the right rear tire and putting on one HELL of a show. Radial tires aren't meant to give and slide as much as a Bias Plyed tire can. Its just how they are constructed differently compared to the Radial.

I'm not a genius to tires, but I know how they feel in an actual racecar cause I use to race on dirt myself.....Stick the Bias Plyed tires on these COT's and you might actually see one hell of a race. Either that, or like I said in a previous post.........allow other manufactuers to come to the table with a tire that can support what the car gives it.

Booty Barker said it best on NASCAR Performance Saturday night....they are trying to make a little man do a big mans job with these tires, and making them hard as rocks isn't the answer. They went down this road a few years ago, and it had the same results.

scottinnj

I think a big problem NASCAR is having is having to adhere too much to sposorships and their contracts of exclusivity. We saw it last year when RCR and AT&T went to court with NASCAR, and this tire issue is a problem due to the lack of competition Goodyear has at the track. Firestone and Goodyear went round and round with big tire wars in the early
70s, and Bill France put the Kabosh on it back then.

But being the "exclusive" tire provider, gasoline, safety helmet, etc. can be a bad thing if the company with the right to be at the track has a product inferior to the company locked outside.

NASCAR should let Firestone and Hoosier compete for race teams' attention and dollars, by letting them shop their wares, and NASCAR should have a set of rules to ensure safety that each tire company has to measure up to.

So much for the idea that Jr. is a shitty driver and the Hendrick tech would make no difference. If it wasn't for that 42nd place finish, he and Kyle would be neck and neck right now.

I was one of those that said he'd go to the front again......but he's still running about how he did at DEI before they went to blowing engines left and right. So basically, him taking his ball and running to another team really hasn't done much for him in the short run.

Quietly, Earnhardt Jr. is living up to the all the hype (http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/opinion/04/02/dcaraviello.junior.quietly.performing/index.html)

There are no more questions about whether he can meet expectations; he's doing it every week. No, he hasn't won yet. He doesn't need to. This is the real Earnhardt, the one unburdened by the family and equipment concerns that always seemed to shadow him at Dale Earnhardt Inc., the one capable of grinding out high finishes like a golfer shooting 71s that will keep him in contention at the end. Each week, it becomes more obvious that the genuine Junior isn't the one who finished 16th in final points in 2007, or
19th in 2005. It was the one who finished third in 2003 and fifth in '04 and '06. It's the one who's cranking out those requisite top-10s heading to Texas, where he earned his first Cup victory exactly eight years ago.

exactly

so most drivers are gonna just do enough to hopefully stay in the top 12 so they can qualify

i guess thats why they added the 10 points for every win part to make them wanna race harder

its better than the original format but not perfect if there is such a thing

Merged onto the track getting up to speed with the entire field (at full speed) directly behind him. Took out a shitload of cars.

I was in the infield when that huge crash took place. I didn't get a good view of it, I just saw half a car being towed off the course. I'm going to try and take some pics tomorrow and post of in this thread.

I know this tho, I'm now a big fan of live races.

After all of that, Jr. only lost 1 point in the standings. I'll take it!

Mabye JP should have the Juicyfruit car more often. Some real nice moves at the end.

Once again, Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson can 69 each other. Before the restart that occurred ahead of the Stewart caution that Dale got caught up in, I heard him on the radio saying "I don't trust the 88" and left him to dry following another driver instead of his TEAM MATE, who seemed to have no problem at all earlier in the race working with his spotter to tell JG to pass him so he could get a lap lead and get 5 points.

Well, leaving Dale out to dry put him in the middle of where Tony's accident took out 8 cars.

Nice thing about the finish is Dale hooked up with Jamie McMurray and in 3 laps went from 29th to 10th. It's too bad Jamie lost a tire at the end of that run, he could have enjoyed a top ten as well. Good part about it is the HMS drivers who ran as TEAM MATES, Dale Jr. and Casey Mears finished top ten. The two cocksuckers, Jeff Gordon and his bitch Jimmie Johnson, lost track position and also standings in the overall points.

Even better, now that the dust settled, Dale and the top three didn't move. NICE!

BTW, the drafting at Dega was weird. Two cars drafted better then three cars, three cars did better then five cars, and five cars making a run on the outside lane could dominate a ten or twelve car train on the inside lane.

Made for some awesome racing.

DW said this a lot on the broadcast, and I agree; the COT is a lot better for bumping than the old cars are. There is NO WAY you'd see the shit we saw today with the old car without MASSIVE accidents.

I said this on FARK, bears repeating here:

Juan Pablo Montoya is a shitty driver, but has hilarious commercials. He's basically the Latin Michael Waltrip.

I wish I had a guy who plays piano and whispers "Nobody"...

And 4 wide ALL THE WAY THROUGH the turns! Talladega w/the COT = Amazing!

Did JPM take out Paul Menard there at the end of the race? Or did Paul realize he was doing well and panic?

Either way, I'm not crying for Paul, but sometimes JPM gets shit on for taking out other drivers, no matter the douchebaggery they are doing in front of him.

I just finished watching the race. Montoya really is not good with this type of racing. There was one point, when he was in second, and he just kept moving from right to left when trying to bump the guy in first (can't remember who was ahead of him). It's pure luck that he didn't cause a crash in the front of the field. He sucks.

I don't like him in NASCAR either...but to say he sucks, well...

The Chip Ganassi with Felix Sabates racing program became the first team to capture three straight Rolex 24 victories with a win by the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Lexus Riley and drivers Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Juan Pablo Montoya and Dario Franchitti.

By "sucks", I mean he sucks in NASCAR. He just hasn't learned how to race that race.

I though Montoya did a great job, the deal between him and Menard was that Montoya got a good run underneath him, Menard tryed to block him spinning himself out. Give and Take is a great term for Talladega. True, Montoya forced his way through.....but that much left in the race and Menard had a great car....he could have back up and made a run back.

on another note, isn't it kinda "funny" how no one has blamed Junior for that 1st big wreck? True, Tony shouldn't have made it 4 or 5 wide there, but Junior didn't exactly hold his line at all.

I seen them run 5 wide around that track many times yesterday....mean to tell me that the Great One, that hasn't won a restrictor plate race in ages, couldn't hold his line?

Hey guys,

We ended up being pretty busy so I wasn't able to get that many shots of the race but here are a few I snapped with my phone.

I don't think that's what was going on. I was watching from about 20 laps to go, at which point he pushed Kyle Busch to the front (who thanked him repeatedly after the race, by the way). A few laps later there was a group that was trying to do the same thing on the outside, and he started weaving back and forth (all the cars on the inside line we doing this) and the ouside line losts its momentum. I have to think he was trying to break the draft of the outside line, cause it was effective. And the last two or three laps he made a move to outside, cut back to the inside and got himself back into second, were just pure racing moves. I almost think if the caution didn't come out, he would have had a shot at winning the thing.

He won on ovals in Cart, he won on road courses in F1 (including Monaco--the toughest race in the world), and the rolex 24 hours race twice, as point out above. He was a far superior open wheel racer to Tony Stewart, so I think he's going to be as good as Stewart with experience, and a few friends (looks like he's on his way--I saw Jeff Gordon giving him a push, and his old teammate David Stremme).

And his finish put him into 12th in the chase, so don't expect him to go anywhere.

Too bad you couldn't get close to the drivers. Wow. (Just kidding!) Were you carrying an air-wrench at any point?

No, but I'm going to start asking chicks if they want to play with my "Air Wrench" at all future races.

The polls are open at NASCAR.com to vote on your driver to get into the All Star Race at Lowes Motorspeedway. My guy is already in, so I'm voting like crazy for Kasey Kahne, as a bunch of my friends are big fans of his.

Anyhow, Here is the Link to the page you vote on. (http://www.nascar.com/promos/allstar/vote/) Have fun and good luck to your driver getting in.
