I surely can't be the only person here to think Blow was a tremendously shitty film.

It was ok. They tried to stuff a lot into 2 hours. And Pee Wee knocks it down a bit.

I really wated to like it, but it just hit like a turd sammich.
One of the few times I thought Depp just stunk. His accent was ridiculous and he seemed like he was playing a robot the entire time. Plus the actors playing his parents are, what, 5-10 years older than him?

I don't feel that what I've done is a crime. And I think it's illogical and irresponsible for you to sentence me to prison. Because, when you think about it, what did I really do? I crossed an imaginary line with a bunch of plants. I mean, you say I'm an outlaw, you say I'm a thief, but where's the Christmas dinner for the people on relief? Huh? You say you're looking for someone who's never weak but always strong, to gather flowers constantly whether you are right or wrong, someone to open each and every door, but it ain't me, babe, huh? No, no, no, it ain't me, babe.
fuckin great...

is blow bad because it wasnt directed by the cohen brothers? did it not have enough 'brilliant' mute-kid-little-miss-sunshine type roles? did ronnie once say it was bad? seriously, get off your high horses. enjoy a movie once in a while.

I have no in-depth analysis to contribute. I liked it a lot, and occasionally watch it when there is nothing else on.

It really does seem like a lot of people are looking for something much deeper in a movie than just trying to enjoy it. I don't get it. Or they flatly cannot enjoy a movie that doesn't have some sort of meaning or twist or something.
It's like people who say that Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 were bad movies. They were movies about a disney ride. What kind of expectations did you have?

Wait. You're getting pissed because we didn't enjoy something? As Mojo said, some of us wanted to like it. We didn't. That doesn't make us snobs. I thought the movie sucked and I went into it with a completely open mind.

He was actually older than his own Mom!
Johnny Depp born June 9, 1963
Rachel Griffiths born December 18, 1968
Ray Liotta born December 18, 1954
It would have been weird if all three were born on the same day.

That's not a continuity problem if they were from the South.

I kinda agree with you. There is no shortage of people around here that hate ANYTHING that's mainstream and/or "poppy". Everything sucks.
But, their opinions are no less valid.
I don't think they're coming off as preachy. Maybe just a little too quick to judge.

Brilliant piece of film-making? Nah.
Tremendously shitty? Again... nah.

There isn't really a formula. I like some really stupid movies and some "snobby" movies as well. There are probably some movies I'm "supposed" to like but I don't. Blow really didn't connect with me at all. It's true that I'm not a fan of some popcorn movies (I honestly have no interest in ever seeing Transformers), but that's because, as a genre, I don't find those movies all that entertaining unless they are done well. Blowing shit up and pure spectacle really isn't all that impressive without good story, script and characters. Then again, I feel the same way about most genres and types of films -- no genre is inherently good. It's the well-made films themselves that I find enjoyable.

What the hell does this have to do with "snobbery?" I wanted to love this flick. The book is very interesting, Depp is a great actor and I typically love these kind of "crime epics." Instead, I walked out of it thinking, "damn, outside of Pee Wee rocking the house, this was one of the most tedious, poorly acted, derivative, least entertaining major studio films I've ever seen."
The whole thing was just like a shitty version of the 2nd half of Goodfellas when it could have been fantastic. I felt the same way about a somewhat similar film, Wonderland, too. I wanted to love both of these films. I was all excited seeing the trailers and knowing the real life stories they were about and the actors involved, but then they both showed up and I didn't like them because they seemed more concerned with shelling out for a catchy, retro soundtrack and authentic 70's wardrobe than actually maing an al around good film.

I honestly can say I hated Johnny Depp till I saw that movie. When black betty was playing in the airport & he was walking with that little sway i fell in love with him from that moment on.
