View Full Version : Old photographs
I love searching the internet to try and find old photographs.
I recently found this site that has hundreds of them. (http://www.thelastwonderoftheworld.com/MIRRORWORLDarchive51-100.html)
There are some old time nudie pictures that might be considered NSFW
Does anyone else know of any similar sites ?
Here is a sample photo of one of Bobo's previous incarnations.

I love old photos. Digital photography is great, but there's something about a grainy, wrinkled old picture that really feels like you've captured a piece of the subject.

I don't need a website to see cool old photos. I just pull out my photos of Grandma Carrie! She was born in 1900.

I found one of my old ones that I like. One of these guys is my mother's father. That's not the Spirit of St. Louis, but I think it may be the same kind of plane.

Another great photo papa. Not to derail, but that plane always freaked me out. It had no windshield. Imagine driving your car looking through a periscope.

If I'm not mistaken, the stock version of that plane did have a windshield, but Lindbergh altered his plane. I can't remember why, though.

I'm pretty sure it was to impress the French chicks, ...but seriously, I did not know that. I think it's a Ryan something or other. I will do my homework and find out more.

Did the simple Wiki thing...
It was a custom made plane called the Ryan NYP, and was based on a mail carrier called the Ryan M-2.
As for the windshield...
Locating fuel tanks at the front of the aircraft reduced the risk of the pilot being crushed to death in crash, thus there was no front windshield, and the pilot's view was limited to the side windows. A periscope was installed and fastened to the plane's left side to provide a forward view, as a precaution against hitting ship masts, trees, or structures while flying at low altitude; however, it is unclear whether the periscope was used during the flight. Lindbergh also used special navigation instruments such as the Earth Inductor Compass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Inductor_Compass), which was the plane's main instrument, allowing Lindbergh to navigate while taking account of the magnetic deviation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_deviation) of the earth.
OK. Back to posting pics. Anybody?

Thanks. Very interesting. For the past half hour I've been checking out the pic's from SinA's first link on the list (shorpy section). Best thing I've seen on the internets in a long time. Awesome!

Yeah, I posted that a month or so ago. I tried to find that thread before I started this one but I am useless.
Another site that has tons of old photos, movies, sound recordings, maps and other stuff is The Library of Congress site. (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/www.loc.gov)
Here is a sample. (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/p?pp/bbcards:@field(CALL+lot))::SortBy=CALL) They have copies of over 2000 baseball cards from 1887 to 1914.
It is a little tough to navigate but there is plenty of stuff there to keep you busy.

I am pretty sure this is Fenway Park

I came across a site that has a few old 3D photos on it. Pretty neat the way they made them look 3D for the internets.

Since we both grew up out here in the redwoods, my wife and I had started collecting old logging photos. You know, the one's where 10 rugged men are standing in the cut of some gigantic redwood, or some action shot of a steam donkey pulling timber down a muddy road. Well we would buy them at various antiques stores, and we had a good stack of 'em, destined for framing. Ironically, the tree that fell through our roof a week before Christmas of 2005 allowed a deluge of rain to stick all of the photos together, rendering them into a uselss biscuit of pulp. The cruelty and cycle of life, all in one.

I love old photos. I have several out of print books of my hometown back in the day and I love comparing things to how they are now.
Here are a few from my own album:
