Ok, I'm having some problems playing with my friend in GTA4, and even problems connecting to him via chat.

I'll be on, he'll be on, I go to set up a party for the two of us, and neither of us can connect to one another. it says "Unable to connect to Party." and offers a vague suggestion that there may be network problems.

Now, my internet is working fine, I'm using a wireless router for my two computers, and hard wired for the Xbox. I'm able to see who is online, and send regular messages, but for some reason, I cannot connect.

This is frustrating me greatly, considering that a few months ago, I was able to party with him in COD4.

He's tried everything on his end, I've reset, restarted, and done everything on my end, except, changing my router info, such as giving my Xbox a static IP, and port forwarding. Do I really need to go geeky on this and do some more technical shit to have a better connection to play with my friends?

GTA4 multiplayer setup is horrendously done. Every time I've tried it is involves people button mashing figuring out how to even start a game.

The thing is, even if it worked as well as it did in the video, which I'm sure it won't, I don't know that I'd want to use it. I can't imagine a useful way to use it. They haven't even figured out how to use the Wii remote. 95% of the time it's used in the same sorts of ways for gimmicky crap. Oh boy, another game where I can steer with the remote, or throw with the remote, or point at something with the remote.

Honestly this shit looks like it has a lot of potential but I thought the same thing about the Wii and while it is a success to me it's been a massive let down. Very few games do anything beyond the simplest things you'd come up with. I don't see why this would be any different. And while what they showed was incredibly impressive would anyone want to spend more than 5 minutes with any of it? it's like those little things you play around with once you buy something new but that can't hold your attention beyond the wow factor.

I'm also wondering if that giant matt is part of it. They showed it in family room video and I think it was supposed to blend in/look like a carpet. Thing is, I've never seen a white carpet with large colored ovals on it like that one did.

I thought the camera was extremely impressive for the tech alone. Full body tracking in full 3d space with both voice and face recognition stunned me. I didn't expect that. On top of that they showed that Milo demo where you are directly interacting with an AI character on screen. We'll find out more about that as more people interact with it but I'm pretty amazed.
Unlike the wii remote this system wouldn't have to be itegrated into every game. This is purely optional and if you are looking for an experience that offers all this then you can buy it. I think microsoft is going to make lots of money on it.

Well, first of all I got my xbox360 a couple months ago for $160 from Dell. I believe a wii goes for $250. So it not a more expensive console. If the casual gamers are going to buy a wii, extra controllers, a wii fit board and all the extra peripherals that nintendo keeps throwing at them then why would you put it past them to get this? Oh and now nintendo wants them to buy a wii motion plus too.
For this to succeed developers will have to implement the variety of tech available throughout their games but still have it optional. I think most will buy it for the experience not for extended play times.
I don't think the milo simulation can be replicated on the wii because it doesn't have facial or voice recognition and the graphics wouldn't hold up to delivering the realistic emotions and movement of the character.

I figure since the current XBox vision cam costs $60 it has to be at least twice that. If I were to guess I'd say $150. Maybe they will act differently since they seem to be banking so much on this but they usually gouge liberally with their accessories.

Hopefully they show some more robust use for the thing in the meantime. When they showed the Wii I was so excited at the potential it had and it hasn't lived up to that. But at least they showed real games at the time. Taking into account my disappointment with the Wii and the fact that all they showed were some impressive tech demos and minigames I'm staying very skeptical until proven otherwise. I don't want to end up like I did with the Wii after the novelty was gone and I finished Wii Sports and Zelda and go "Now what?" With a few exceptions I'm still waiting. As awesome as it would be I don't want to pretend I'm in Minority Report for 5 minutes and then go "now what?" with how much this would cost.

Metal Gear Rising, the 360 Raiden game, is also coming to PS3 and PC. Whew. I'm glad it wasn't exclusive, and I figured it wasn't when Microsoft wasn't screaming exclusive every 5 seconds during that announcement. In addition to that kojima will be revealing Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP during the Sony conference, and oddly enough, he will be making a Castlevania game called Lords of Shadow for both 360 and PS3.

Sounds pretty awesome to me.

I think that the device has a lot of potential in just interacting with the 360 alone... As far as games go... I'd like to see what the device can do in the hands of game makers like bioware and bethesda... I also think that it opens a lot of possibilities in the arcade...

I read a post somewhere, maybe IGN, that the camera would act as something to immerse you into the games more rather then just throwing out the regular controller altogether. For instance, if your playing something like rock band with the guitars and the camera is on, then it could trace your exact body movements onto the the character on stage as you are playing. I thought that was a really cool idea. Little thinks like that could make a game so much more enjoyable. Or how about lobbing a grenade in call of duty etc

Same thing happened to me, but they told me it was out of warranty!!!! I had to buy a fucking new one. The drive then became fucked and would sometimes open, sometimes not. Of course when I went to trade it in, I pretended like that part wasn't broken, and of course when they tested it, the fucking drive wouldn't open.

He took it to the UPS store for the free shipping (paid by Microsoft), and the woman there said they send back at least 5 a day. That's 5 units in that particular store, in an area that has a population of less than 100,000. How many of those fucking things break each day around the country?!

There are 5 different brands of dvd drives that the 360 uses according to release date

hitachi (several models), samsung, toshiba, benq, and now they all ship with lite-ons.

Replacing the dvd drive isn't as simple as swapping it out, each console is linked to a unique drive that is identified with a key. You could even switch the exact same model drive out, and it wouldn't work.

Swapping the drive out then uses the same process as modifying it to play "backed up" games. You must extract the key from the original drive, copy it to the firmware, then write it to the new drive.

If the new drive is a different make/model you can also trick the xbox into thinking it is a different make/model.

There are also several fixes you can find on youtube if you want to salvage your old dvd drive. Lasers can be fairly cheap to replace, door motors, magnets, or even calibrating the laser to be a bit more sensitive.

It requires a learning curve; I remember feeling similar frustration when I first started the game on xbox 360. Probably partly what made the game so damn enjoyable for me, it actually challenged me to learn its ways. Probably similar to how some guys love driving stick-shift, even though the learning experience probably was a pain in the ass.

Just use some wd-40 along the tracks when the drive is opened.

If that fails you might need a new drive, it's kind of tricky to do if you're not very computer literate.

You can't just swap any 360 drive, each drive can only be used with the exact 360 it was shipped with.

If you swap one, you have to extract the key from your original drive, then write it to the new drive. If it's a different brand, you also have to trick the xbox into thinking it's the original drive brand and model.

There's programs to do it, if you're looking for a project, drives can be found for about $30.

You can sell a repaired RROD for 100 bones pretty easy on Kijijji etc...

A kit with a high success rate of repair goes for 10 bones, but if you buy the right stuff from a hardware store you could fix 112 for under 100 bones.

Lets say you can only fix 75% (That's a low figure, probably higher) of them that's 8400 bones. A whopping 1826% profit.

Not quite. It doesn't have PS2 backwards compatibility and you can't boot linux(if that's your thing). If any of those things matter to you then you can probably get the "old" PS3.

Your ps2 is a by far better machine that lets you play way more games than ps3 does.

All PS3s are also backward compatible for PS (One) games. You are right though, both software and hardware emulation failed miserably with some PS2 games.

Good way to do it. Set up PS3 Media Server or TVersity on your desktop and stream content to your PS3 and you'll be all set (assuming you don't already have something like that already set up.)

That's what I was thinking too - I don't know thought if they'd have to redevelop the PS2 games for the PS3 architecture (since even PS3s with hardware emulation had a tough time handling some games.) If it's not too much work for studios, it would make sense for them to make a PS3 port for some of the more popular games.

My PS2 has been working since I got it in 7th grade (7 years ago) without a single issue. It's a workhorse and there are a few titles that are still amazing to this day.

Did you try it the other way?

Check to see if the power supply that was in during the lightning storm can still bring the dead xbox up to the red rings.

Yeah, sounds like the board is probably fried.

You didn't force the power supply in did you?

There's 3 different power supplies that have been released through the years, the older ones were 203w, the newer ones are 175w.

Call Microsoft and say you have the three red rings, and if it's under three years, give it a try and mail it in. They get so many, often times they don't even test it and just ship you a new one.

Set up media sharing in Media Player 11 for it to share with Xbox, and you can cut out the thumbstick, and just stream them from your comp.

My pc is in the basement with my xbox. My pc has a wireless nic. The wifi modem is upstairs so to stream from the pc to xbox is slow as shit.

My Xbox 360 has replaced my PC for gaming; it's better this way. I get more bored of games faster on a TV than I do on a monitor. Diet coke of videogames for me. All the PC games these days are dumbed down to work on 360 anyway, so all the novelties of having a PC game are dissolving rather quickly.

Anybody notice that time will warp faster when you're on a PC game than it does when you're playing a console game? Time warps regardless of the system, but on a PC it's like warping to level 8-1 from 1-2 in Mario whereas on 360 I just warp from level 2 to level 5 in Super Mario 3.

Uggghhh...I find the Pitt to be the most uneccessary of all the DLC. It barely ties into the main story line and I discovered that if you have two followers with you (outside of Dogmeat) they wont rejoin together when you go to the Pitt. I recommend Anchorage, Point Lookout, Broken Steel and the new one on the spaceship. The Pitt is a must miss. Although I do like when you get the Gauze gun back and just blow the shit out of everyone in the revolt.

Yes, but it's tricky...

You can get drives on ebay, BenQ's are the best and easiest to swap.

But you also need to install the right drivers on your computer to recognize the drive, many computers still won't even recognize it. And depending on the drive you have now, it could be even more difficult. Lite-on's need a special part, there's a different way for each drive, etc.

If you still want to do it yourself I can help, but it could get pricey depending on the drive.

If you can get the drive out, and mail it to me, I'll mod it and replace it for free, I have a ton of them laying around here, just let me know which way you want to go with it.

Each console is linked to a specific drive.

Each drive is assigned a unique key, which is a string of a bunch of letters and numbers.

So you have to get the key off the original drive, then flash the key and drive type to the new drive, so the xbox will recognize it as the original drive.

You cant just pop one out, and the new one in.

Keep in mind, doing this will also get the console (not gamertag) banned from Xbox Live.

MS just banned 1,000,000 people in the past week from Live for having modded consoles.

Everyone's putting their banned consoles cheap on Ebay, so if anyone else is looking for an Xbox and being online isn't an issue, you can easily get one for about $75 right now.

Are the newer Elites any better breakage wise? I plan on installing games to the HD from now on to hopefully avoid my neverending dvd drive crap out problem. I ended up getting so frustrated that I walked into Gamestop and just bought a new one full retail instead of messing around trying to find a deal.

MS are such pieces of shit. Replacing a DVD Drive should be a fucking $25 fix, but it appears that the only way to do it without technically "modding" it would be to send it to them and pay $100.

They are slightly better, but they do still break more than Wii or PS3.

The new Lite-On drives are a lot better than the ones they used in the beginning, they're also using bigger and better heat sinks and they are consuming less power so that they generate less heat (first gen 360's were 203 watt, now they're down to 150 watt). It's still a flawed design, and they use the same shitty thermal paste between the processors and the heat sinks.

Luckily they're relatively easy to fix compared to the Wii and PS3, they don't have shit for parts in them, but parts are a lot easier to mix and match with PS3 and Wii.

It's always sucked ass for me. I bought something for $30 called PlayOn that streams Hulu and anything I put in a folder on my laptop and it works flawlessly and fast.

There's a free program called TVersity that does the same thing for free, streams all vid files on my pc to the 360. Does hulu, youtube, anything with an RSS feed. Onion News Network straight to my 360 for free, pretty bad-ass.

I had to fuck with the settings in my router a bit to get it to work faster. It's just better to use the old way and browse the folders to stream, or use TVersity.

Since it happened to me, I have found some interesting articles regarding the fail rates for the 360. At least they're failing while the warranty is still valid. PS3's are starting to fail now, the percentages will get a bit more even. The console was so cheap compared to other blu-ray players at the time because the drive is shit. The lasers are all burning out on them, and the warranties are running out. Not to mention they're starting to have the exact same problem as the 360 now as well.

I had this error on my nephews system last night. all i had to do was unhook all the cords from the system and replug them in and that seemed to do the trick. Hope this helps.

I spent the last 2 hours on the phone with Xbox and then my bank trying to figure out why the fuck I cannot purchase anything on Xbox live all of the sudden. Neither company knows why. How does this happen? I added another credit card of mine and the same fucking problem. Xbox told me it was my credit card company's fault, then when I spoke with them, they said that Xbox was trying to authorize with the wrong expiration date, even though I confirmed the date with both the credit company and xbox and it was correct. I knew I was fucked when at the end of my conversation with Xbox, the rep quickly gave me a list of ports that I needed to have my router company open for me. I knew it was just to get me off the phone, but I forwarded the ports myself just for laughs and it did nothing. The credit rep pulled a similar "eject" move and told me that Xbox was probably using a new verification system where you set up a special password with Visa and use that when Xbox asks for it. I told her that Xbox was not using this system and was not asking me for a special Visa password. She said that it was still probably that, and that I should try that and contact them again if it didn't work. It didn't work. How fucking hard can it be to spend 19.95 on a 3-year-old game?:furious::wallbash:

Another 30 minutes on phone with Xbox to let them know that there was no error on the credit company's side. They gave me a case number when I got off the phone last time and told me to write it down so that if I called back, the new operator would know exactly what my problem was. Well, the case number system works as good as their billing system, because even after I gave them my case number, they still made me go through all of the bullshit that I had already done with the last operator. The new hasty advice given to me: Wait for 30 minutes and try to purchase again, because maybe their authorization will have gone through by then, otherwise call back. Funny, they stop answering the phone for the evening in 15 minutes. At least I got a new case number to tell them tomorrow when I call back. Haitian refugees have nothing on the misery I'm in right now.
