assuming xp
open "my computer"
right click on the drive and select "properties"
the "type" column should say.
If not, just goggle the make and model number

I think every drive made in the last few years is +/- compatible. If you have a burning program like Nero, it probably has a drive info tool. I found a table that shows the drive as +/- R(W) (http://www.photodex.com/support/drivelist.html?make=Atapi).
