The '86 Giants. Especially Jim Burt and Leonard Marshall.

Almost forgot this one: Terry Labonte, always a class act on the track.

Brett Favre.
Just to see someone with all hes acomplished still goin out there and having fun and still being very productive is amazing in its self but what really impress me is the fact that he puts him self out there for everyone weather it be good or bad in his life he doesnt put on a faceade its really refreshing

The reason I became a Red Sox fan even though I was raised as a Yankee fan. Copied his batting stance, used his glove, and wore #14.

Growing up a Big Red Machine fan in the 70's my heroes were Johnny Bench and Pete Rose.

In hockey, even though I was a Wings fan the guy I loved to watch play and patterned my style after was Bobby Nystrom of the New York Islanders. No wonder I was a second line winger my entire career.

Ray Bourque.

My prized possession is a #7 Ray Bourque game used stick from 1988. The year he changed his number to 77.

I disagree. My 4 year old son idolizes Tom Brady. And for the joy he brings to my son, he is my hero as well.

Plus he's boning Gisele Bundchen for God's sake. How could he not be a hero?

While maybe Hero is too strong a word, I loved Bill Lee when I was a kid. I was devastated when the Red Sox traded him to Montreal for Stan Papi (Who the hell is Stan Papi?). Warren Zevon even wrote a song for him.

Lee was one of the game’s few counterculture symbols: he talked to animals, championed environmental causes, practiced yoga, ate health foods, sprinkled marijuana on his buckwheat pancakes (an indiscretion for which he was fined $250 by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn), pondered Einstein and Vonnegut, quoted from Mao, and studied Eastern philosophers and mystics. It was in this context that former Red Sox teammate John Kennedy first dubbed him "Spaceman," a nickname writers thereafter used as shorthand to describe his free spirit. At first irritated by the appellation (preferring to be known as "Earth Man"), Lee would eventually approve of the "Spaceman" moniker. "I realized that it’s the ultimate compliment," he remarked. "Everybody thinks they’re earthlings but in actuality we’re only here for a brief moment, and the cinder that we’re on is moving as Spaceship Earth, so we’re all space travelers."

Messier has already been mention, as has Namath.

So I'll go with someone else:

Football is all about heart. Putting your body on the line. Making it count. This guy pushed, and pushed, and pushed, and he made it. An inspiration.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/latinmagic151/WayneChrebet.jpg

His last play is what he did his entire career. Made a shoestring catch on third and long.

And of course:

Absolutely not ... we had season tickets when I was a kid .... I was a Goalie and played on a terrible team so I guess I identified with him somehow. I also thought "he must be the nicest guy in all of sports" because he would throw the practice pucks in to the crowd after every pre-game warm up. When I was 8 that was the greatest thing ever.

My first baseball hero was Steve Sax and Football was Bernie Kozar .... so I guess I chose less than iconic players for some reason.

ah, that makes more sense now. Cause I KNOW it couldn't have been for his ability, either on the ice or his awful commentary

oh come on  ... he was above average in net, even if only slightly ... I think he even won a Jennings trophy once. I cannot however, defend his post-playing career.

I didn't even know he did commentary. I usually catch a glimpse of that rug of his during pregame and my entire nervous system shuts down from shock.

I never really had a "sports hero." As Jeff Pearlman wrote, the Mets of the 80's were the "Bad Guys" so there wasn't much to look up too. But if I had to pick somebody I guess...
http://users.aol.com/spotty3/private/mookie1.jpg
Mookie Wilson.
He gave me my childhood nickname (not my board name however. I do somewhat regret not using my actual nickname as my nickname) which has lasted to today, and since I was the smallest kid in Little League I always wore #1. So I wanted to play like Mookie. Scrappy, speedy, and with no power what so ever.
