Absinthe is legal in America again, at least in a less wormwood enhanced version. It's called Lucid.

Unlike other products that have been around in the USA for a few years now this one uses the same wormwood that the original drink used 100 years ago.
I saw it in the store yesterday and want to try it but the bottle costs $60, which is a tad out of my price range for a bottle of liquor. Maybe after Christmas if Santa is good to me, but for an impulse buy I can't justify it.
So has anyone bought this yet? Is it worth it or is it just a curiosity that has a high price because of the absinthe legend?

that's less than the price of an average bottle of scotch.
i'll have to give this a try.

My wife bought 4 bottles of different types of Absinthe last year for Christmas. She ordered it online from Europe. I didn't dare ask her how much she spent, but she did tell me that it was much more than I would have spent.
I am not much of a drinker so one small glass of the stuff pretty much knocks me out and it does sometimes lead to nice dreams (although most hard liquor does the same for me).
I don't know about the domestic version of Absinthe, but as for what my wife bought for me, I can say that I can only take a small glass of the stuff once or twice per month. The "licorice" flavor is extremely strong. (Think of the old Nyquil cold medicine).
With what is left of the 4 bottles, I have no doubt that we have enough Absinthe to last the rest of our lives.

I've found that the same affects and flavour can be experienced by simply quaffing a low octane blend at Union 76.

The "active" ingredient in absinthe is called thujone and it's illegal in the US and pretty heavily regulated in Europe. You probably didn't get one of the stronger ones.
There's an alcoholic energy drink called Four that has wormwood in it, but it tastes like ass and doesn't have any thujone. I imagine that Lucid is just a foul-tasting waste of money.

I buy the stuff from Germany ( www.alandia.de/ ) & the Czech Republic ( http://www.greenfairy.org/ ). Here in Vegas, Baby, certain bars will prepare an absinthe drink for ya from scratch & performing the full ritual, carmelizing the sugar, etc... The drinks cost between $10 & $15.

Absinthe is just a liquor with a high proof. It was tested and proved that it didn't have any psychedelic affects. Thujone was blamed for it but that isn't true. That is why no one has answered that it gave them these affects in this thread. It's bogus. Like Raamone said he'd rather watch a gentlemen jack.

It's possible that during the period in Europe where Absinthe was being blamed for psychosis and murderous sprees, "adulterants" that were added to cheaper brands caused these hallucinations and effects that people claimed to experience. Some were added for color, others to produce the clouding effect when mixed with water. Some cheaper brands may have even had dangerous levels of methanol from bad distilling.

I've heard that carmelizing the sugar is poo pooed by those who pretend to know what they are doing. I'm just too lazy to do it that way, and besides, I'd probably set myself on fire.

I have a friend who brought back some absinthe from Prague. That stuff is the best. We drank a lot of it and went to an air show on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. I've never seen the Blue Angels perform so well. I had to play guitar in a bar that night and just could not get through any of the songs. Bottom Line----Absinthe rules!!!!!

It's in the liquor store around the corner from my chicks house in Boston, so I've been drinking a lot of it lately.
No it doesn't have hallucinagenic effects, that's not what absinthe is..... the differance from any other high proof booze is that it's a "clean" drunk.
I get fucked up, but I feel like I can do anything... eg, walking past my chicks piano I look at full KNOWING I could play it... but in reality I can't!~LOL
The clearest esciption I can give is the differance between a lite fluffy green weed as aposed to a thick tight brown weed. Differant heads, that's all.
I really like it, I've tried a few brands and the Lucid is my favorite.
WELL worth $60 a bottle

Yeah, some people call regular alcohol "liquid courage," absinthe is "liquid inspiration!!!"
I've been putting a coffee flavored version in my morning coffee, it's called Black Cat... breakfast of champions!!!

Hi All,
This is Jacob Verte. I am the managing director of The Green Fairy Organization. You may have heard me several times on Don and Mike. We do an absinthe show with them about once per year.
We did one show with Fez too when they were all at the same station. I have tried to contact Ron and Fez to maybe do an absinthe show with them, but have not been able to get a reply.
If any of you here are interested in this, it would help greatly if you would contact the show about this.
Also, if any of you have any questions about absinthe or our company, I will try and check this thread as often as possible.
Jacob
