There seems to be a whole new genre of movies in the last decade or so featuring tough but intelligent blacks that only needed someone to believe in them in order rise up and be the best they could be and take down Whitey while their at it.
How many can you name?

Finding Forrester (the writer kid)
Pearl Harbor (the cook)
Save the Last Dance (the dancer kid)
Dangerous Minds (all of them)
Ummm...
there are more I know it, but somehow I only got to four.
I think it's an interesting trend, and a kind of cultural twist on the traditional Horatio Alger hometown-boy-makes-good plot.
Makes sense to me.

When that movie first came out, I thought it was a case of the filmmaker adding a fictional character to pander to special interest groups. Several years ago, I found out it was a TRUE STORY (http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq57-4.htm). I think they had the same guy in Tora Tora Tora, but he wasn't as prominently featured.

Pearl Harbor (the cook).
Look. even if you look at the Michael Bay special effects layden movie you will see that cook (a shitty portrayal of Doris Miller) shot up friendly ships too...although, he was the first Black-American (Yes I am skirting the more PC titled African-American) to get the Navy cross for such. Nimitz said it best in his defense of Mr. Miller: "I havent operated a gun in over 22 years. I too would have of shot up my own ships with a gun I was unfamiliar with." Mr. Miller well deserved that medal.
Personally I wouldnt have of shot up friendly ships...but that comes from a man with a 25 of 40 marksmanship skill.
