I have two pc's. one pc connects to a lan port(via cat5 cable) on the linksys wireless broadband router. the wan port on the router connects to the cable modem. the second pc has a linksys usb wireless adapter and is able to use the wan but i am unable to get the two pc's to see each other on the lan. i tried turning off the firewall and running the 'setup home network' wizard creating the same workgroup name on each pc to no avail. i want the two pc's to be able to see each other so i can share the printer and transfer files, etc.
each pc is running xp pro.
any help would be appreciated!

on each pc, open a command prompt and type
ipconfig /all
let's assume one pc is 192.168.1.2, and the other is 192.168.1.3 (ip address at the bottom)
from the .2 one, ping 192.168.1.3
from the .3 one, ping 192.168.1.2
and post the results.

1 pc
192.168.1.102
the other
192.168.1.101
they cannot ping each other. they each have a 24bit subnet mask and the same gateway setting 192.168.1.1
this one has a network bridge?

c'mon guys grow up - there is NO hack value as it's all internal to his network, and he did ask for help. If he doesnt want to post it, he can pm me instead.

Therein lies the joke. If it were hackable info, I would have edited the post and sent him a PM.
Lighten up, Francis.

ok, just didnt want you guys scaring him off when he has a legit problem, and I use linksys, and may be able to help save him some $ not having to deal with linksys/ms runaround.
Hopefully he'll respond.

well first of all that network bridge entry bothers me. I dont see why it's there. When you did the ping, what exactly did you see? Did it just time out, complain about something, or hang? Can you open the control panel, go to network settings, open Local Area Connection, and disable it? You said that they're both in the same workgroup, and both can get to the internet in either config, right?
I dont think it has to do with security/permissions/logon account as the ping fails...
That 192.168.0.1 addy bothers me.... especially if it doesnt have a default gateway.

i got rid of the bridge connection but no change. the ping just gets a 'no reply' 3 times. i'm thinking i have to get rid of the hard-wire from the first pc to the wireless router and also put a usb wireless adapter on it and just be hard-wired to the cable modem? the one i have on the 2nd computer in the 2nd bedroom was 49.00. i'm thinking i'll only need the 29.00 one for this first computer because it sits right next to the wireless router.
i'll have to look around on the net a bit and ask some of the desktop guys at work
any further suggestions are welcomed and thanks for helping out

i just found this page. i think it's telling me you can't have one hard-wired lan connection and one usb wireless lan connection and expect them to communicate.
just due to the statement in bold below
Wireless network adapter. Connects your computer to your wireless router. If you have a newer portable computer, you might already have wireless capabilities built in. To find out if you have wireless networking built in, and for more information about buying and installing a network adapter, read Install a wireless network adapter. Make sure you have an adapter for every computer on your network.
i assumed the wireless router would allow both wireless and hardwired to talk to one another

well I dont think going completely wireless is necessary, but when I moved, I dropped the wireless from my tivo and went hardwired as it's next to the router now. Did simplify things.
I assume that the other network settings on the hardwired on (the one that you disabled the bridge conn on, right) remain the same?
You dont generally have to do it, but once you removed the bridge conn, rebooting all 3 (2 pc's and the router ((you can leave the cablemodem alone)) is warranted).
Another assumption - the linksys config is pretty standard - nothing hinky set up, like port forwarding for games, etc?
oh "make sure you have an adapter for every device on your network" means wired or wireless - you can mix. An adapter is an adapter, wether it's wired or wireless, built in or add on. It's not a problem, except in the case of 2 wireless (it would just be slow, but work).
Glad you tried turning of the xp firewall as a test. That's one less thing to worry.
Need to think this thru some more. The stumper is that they both can get to the internet, but not see each other. That's ODD.

Bill, the reason i was leaning this way, and now that i read it more 'all-together' It seems it's pretty much talking about "just" wireless adapters in this paragraph. can't say I'm totally sure. i'll have to give it a shot unless i hear anything confirmed different

FINALLY!
I downloaded the Linksys EasyLink Advisor from the Linksys sight and ran it locally and then on the 2nd desktop with the usb wireless adapter and now the computers can communicate with each other and I can share files and the printer along with the internet access.
everyone can stop worrying now...
